My grandfather served in WW1 (fought at Vimy), and my father in WW2. Both have passed, but neither of them demonstrated the characteristic alpha behaviours. They treated everybody with kindness and respect, never played the "military" card, and were both humble men. Those who talk the most and the loudest are seldom the most brave. @@mickylawless1941 They're charging people with torture fetishes money to let them experience their torture fetish. The whole "alpha male" thing is ridiculous, but our economy is set up on charging people money for things they want.
I don't really view this as all that different from charging people admission to a BDSM dungeon. It's the same mentality on the part of the client.

I got paid to do this when I joined the British army, and stayed for the next 20 years......interesting that our character building into combat engineers provided many skills and a mixture of psychology that does not fit the modern labels of " alpha, beta ,sigma " etc
We were trained to become leaders and experts in our trades, but to also valid follow orders without hesitation, to take control of other soldiers but to also defer control to another if they were better suited, to immediately create a hierarchy that took account of competence but provided a place for all.

Exactly as you stated. I came our a better person. Disciplined, confident and self aware. I didn't need to be agro on everyone. I had nothing to prove because I knew myself and my capabilities. That is also, as you say, someone who studies the martial arts. Well done, again

I told him, I will not allow anyone to scream in my face and talk down to me. The camp was a load of bullshit to me. Hello, former army here. As someone who went through something similar, the only thing here that is wrong is charging these people $ 18 000. This isnt about teaching men to be aggressive, but to show them they're not made of glass, amp up their confidence. The purpose behind this training is to break down the conditioning society, family, friends, and we ourselves put us, strip everything away to bare bones, to your core, and ask yourself "can I survive? Do I have what it takes?"
When you find out that the answer is yes, you are empowered for the rest of your life because you have activated deep, primal, survival instincts. This is especially important for those who are timid, wether naturally or conditioned to be so.
I hate the term alpha male because it's a gimmick. Very few people have even read the sexual/societal hierarchy, which tells us it's all BS because it's fractal. In one group, say at home, you're the alpha. At work you're not going to boss around the higher ups, so you might be a delta or beta. To your neighbors you might be a sigma. It goes on and on.

The methods used here are mostly from military training and, AFAIK, quite explicitly designed to 'break and remold' people into following orders and doing illogical things like running *towards* danger (in the broadest sense), i. e. exactly what soldiers need to do.
Thus, it's the exact opposite of creating self-thinking, responsible adults. :-(

Man, this is just sad. And this is the biggest and saddest mistake. I think that men make. There’s a big difference between being aggressive and assertive. Aggression in a non-self-defense environment comes across as a mental illness or a weakness. In my life. I am an almost 60-year-old gay male. I live in the mountains. And I have a reputation not to be fucked with. Lol and not because I’m aggressive. Because I’m assertive. You can go about life being incredibly masculine and never have to use physical force. Mastering assertiveness. And the use of language and, following through with what you commit to. Are the highest forms of alpha male. To have character instead of being a character? That’s alpha male.

I’m reminded of an intro course I took at a martial art school. It just so happened to be a woman instructor that day. She yelled a lot to appear tough I guess. I just thought she seemed foolish and laughed whenever she yelled. I don’t understand what she thought yelling would accomplish. Needless to say, I didn’t return. Good instructors don’t yell, they educate and support. Drill instructors yell to create chaos to help recruits learn how to focus under stress, but the other instructors actually teaching skills aren’t yelling at recruits.

  • @lsdustyrhodes

I agree with Dr. Philips. This boot camp looks a lot like Navy Seals hell week training, but here's the difference. Hell week isn't designed to develop character, but rather, it's designed to weed out those who don't already possess the character and will necessary to undergo the strictures of elite combat engagement. I believe that those who wash out of, or just eek through, this sort of three-day boot camp, featuring physical and emotional abuse, may wind up worse off in the long run ("yes, I am the loser I always feared I was"). Of course, if you get through it, you may come away with the knowledge that you're tougher than you thought. But bottom line, there is no quick fix for developing deep character traits. I've been a martial artist for almost thirty years, and a teaching black belt for nearly twenty-five. When I started, at age forty-four, I was that soft person. I am much different now, much tougher physically and, especially, emotionally. This didn't happen over a weekend.

That was really pathetic. The instructors are nothing but money grabbing fools taking advantage of guys who want to think they're gaining what the Army or Marines teach without actually being a soldier. It's like the dog catcher who really wanted to be a cop. THIS has no end game, and these guys are paying big bucks for it. The military pays you and there is an end game and they offer many different avenues if you serve. WTF is this?

Good points Dr Mark. Firstly as you say this concept of 'alpha ' male derives from evolutionary psychology which as you point out is based on animal behaviour. Human behaviours are much more complex diverse and less predictable.
Secondly :who would you consider more 'alpha' : a well trained special forces operative ,so skilled and obedient that he would be willing to wipe out hundreds of women and children on command of his 'superiors'?
Or a so called 'beta' male that would refuse to undertake such training, have his own sovereignty, having enough self knowledge that he would rather be shot or shoot his commander than slaughter those innocents ..... Darwinism and popular culture have a lot to answer on what it means to be a 'man'.

The old coaches here are some of the toughest people that i ever met, but also the kindest people that i ever met. In contrast to the coaches in Europe they never get loud.
