  • Ford built a super-powerful engine that was banned from NASCAR before it could be raced.
Why? Some say it was because it wasn't installed in production cars and other sayit was because Chrysler was scared to have a real competitor that would cost them the victory. Stick till the end to know every detail on how and why was this engine built.

I like engines. I'm a master engine builder of over 60 years experience. Which means that I was around for pretty much all of this. If you're going to compare the 427 SOHC to the 426 Hemi, remember that the street 426 Hemi is the "dumbed down" version of the 426 Race Hemi.
Different engine. The street Hemi has an upward tilt to the cylinder heads. Less aggressive camshaft, lower compression ratio, etc. The Race 426 wouldn't fit into a production car. And right out of the lab the 426 Race Hemi produced upwards of 750 horsepower before it got dialed in. How much power its street counterpart made was of no concern. It was for homologation purposes only.
If you want to know how much real power the 427 SOHC made you just have to do some grade five arithmetic on a Ford timeslip. NO, it did NOT put out 615 horsepower with one 4-barrel. And NO, it certainly did NOT put out 657 horsepower with 2 four-barrels. Ford sabotaged themselves with their false horsepower boasts. NASCAR (Bill France) decided to believe Ford. That's why the weight penalty and the full size Galaxy. See what happens when you B/S?
It's really not too hard to demonstrate who was putting out the horsepower when Ford's SOHC was in the tens and Dodge's HEMI was in the nines, with heavier cars. As you can see, I don't drink the Kool-Aid, and the fractured fairy tales about the Ford 427 SOHC are more crap than I can shovel in a month.
