If you had ever driven a car on rural italian roads, you'd know that no other car but the Fiat panda 4x4 makes sense. Especially mountain roads. Literally everything about that car is practical. The width, the unpainted plastic bumpers for bump-parking and driving narrow roads, the relatively good interior space for 4 people thanks to it's boxy shape. We were in German cars and felt out of place, constantly panicking, we'd scrape something, while the natives had fun driving their Pandas. That car was not ugly designed, because it was not designed. Designer was sent on vaccation, when fiat made the car. xD A simple hammer can't be ugly, it's a natural tool. The Fiat Panda is that simple hammer as a car. And yes, the car makes absolutely 0 sense, if driven on any road that was designed for cars specifically, like in the US, or even the Italian highway system. Then it quite sucks.
