    This looks a pretty awesome mod
    At Isandhlwana the british troops were strung out all over the place when they needed to be tightly packed.
    Rorkes drift showed what should have happened if they had been tightly packed.
    Cool upload.

    I love the smoke, and the voice effects. Maybe the Zulu's could get more sound effects, chanting, yells, etc? Was fun to watch.

    Roots of this mod can be found back in Rome Total War and defending a bridge with a unit or two of Spartan Hoplites against numerically superior Partian desert infantry.

    Did we watch the same video here? Once melee combat began the British pretty much lost all hope, and were reduced to a small band fighting desperately for their lives.

    Yes they are. The Zulu wars took place in the later half of the 19th century, by which point Great Britain was using the Henry-martini breech loader rifle.

    The British managed to get the upper hand after the battle at Rorke's Drift, and subsequently win the war with the Zulu being defeated at the Battle of Ulundi on July 4. Rorke's drift was a dutch missionary in the heart of zulu lands

    I think there should be a total war game that streachs from 1760 to 1920. You start out with infantry armed with muskets, muzzle loading smooth bore cannon, wooden sailing ships and at the end of the game you have machine guns, early tanks, Biplanes and massive steel armored battleships armed with guns up to 18 inch calibur that is able hit targets from almost over the horizon. The largest end game battleships would be based on ww1 designs that were planned but never completed

    "On December 11, 1878, agents of the British delivered an ultimatum to 11 chiefs representing Cetshwayo. The terms forced upon Cetshwayo required him to disband his army and accept British authority. Cetshwayo refused, and war followed at the start of 1879. During the war, the Zulus defeated the British at the Battle of Isandlwana on January 22.

    I wish people would stop saying that about Empire, it was broken on "launch" which was YEARS ago - since then it has had 6 HUGE patches and its GREAT!
    Empire has a larger Campaign and more options but Napoleon is much more polished but a smaller campaign, more focused. I would get get Empire first, but you might want to wait for the steam sales, they often sell a Empire&Napoleon set for like 5-7pounds.

    "History is written by the victor" what this quote means is we don't know what happened because Great Britain won the war which means they can put what ever they won't in the history books and you can't prove it's accurate unless you were there.

    Well that's what the Bayonet's are for. I mean allot of what happened in Rourke's drift was British soldiers using their bayonet's to defend themselves when the Zulu's breached the defences.

  • @Brookmier
    @Brookmier 11 лет назад

    Actually the Zulu's invaded what was regarded as Natal, a predominantly Boer/Akrikaaner state that was in essence a British protectorate. This was after the British demanded that their King Chetawo (spelling) disband his army, following frequent border skirmishes with the local population. The Zulu's are from further North along the eastern coast of Africa and should be added, killed far more 'Africans' in their journey south than the British have ever killed in Africa.

    ""I realise that Zulu have an advabtage in melee with their weapons and shields, but those Brits apparently did not know how to use their bayonets.""
    Yes they did and the Zulus greatly feared the British bayonet.
    However, when close in fighting is VERY packed and tight then a Martini Henry rifle with a bayonet on the end is a VERY long and cumbersome weapon and cannot be used as well as the Zulus' short stabbing spears which were more manoeuvrable.

    The massive stalemate of Trench warfare only occur in Western European Front and the Danderelles campgain. Other theaters of ww1 such as the Russian Front, Palastian Front and the African front were highly mobile. Anyway by late 1917 and 1918 the stalemate of Trench Warfare was broken thanks to new technology and tactics that were develope during the painful lessons commanders had learned over the 3 years of near futile bloodshed

    If you are talking about Rorkes Drift there was 4,000 Zulus and 150 British soldiers and at Isandlwana there was 18,000 Zulus and 1,200 British soldiers.

  • @Goji1
    @Goji1 11 лет назад

    Also have to take terrain into the factor. That battle took place on a wide open field. Sure the Brits had a clear open field of fire but the zulu's number can more easily overwhelm them on all sides. If the superiors had half a brain they should ordered those soldiers back to tighter quarters where the numbers wouldn't be as daunting and would have probably fared much better or even won.

    Oh, how could I forget the music! I guess the original mod had actual music from the movie Zulu which was excellent, but I guess that had to remove it because of copy rights, and replace it with music that's mmm okay, but much more suited for an American western battle, but what I really don't like about some of it is it makes me think of the old beef "It's what's for dinner" commercials.
    Tried replacing the music in the mod with the music from both Zulu, and Zulu Dawn movies which both had excellent music, into the game music files, but for some reason it only plays the music I put in on start up and setup, but plays the same old western music during the game...errrr! Obviously I replace the wrong music files, but I can't find the right ones anywhere? :(

    Yes, the Mongols had very good strategy. They conquered Empire of China, Persia, and Turks. Although European armor was pretty decent against the Mongol swords, the Mongols used the open terrain and their calvary in guerrilla warfare against the Eastern European. Pretty much half of East European fell to the Mongols within a few years after arrival. The Zulu's main advantage is their not afraid of dying and will attack until winning.

    Actually thats where you might be wrong. Zulu's shield can withstand up to 30 pound force of any missle attacks. Also Zulu's war chant makes them impervious to fleeing or becoming cowards. Zulu's will probably lose a lot but their close combat damage makes up for their losses. I still say Zulu has a 50/50 chance of winning.

    I hope Total War finds a way to make a WW1 game. How epic would that be? It would be a completely different monster of a game. Smaller more deadlier units taking cover and going prone wherever they can. Mortar and heavy artillery strikes tearing up the landscape. Trenches. Experimental tanks. I hope they do one day.

    The way the British obtained the South of Africa ,was hence.
    Shaka barely survived an asassination attempt by rival tribes. and was treated by a small group of british traders.he survived and whilst delirious
    was shown a document roughly ceding a seventh of the Zulu Kingdom .
    The British then took this as a reasonable claim to the South of Africa
    and thus dispossed not by war but trickery the Rightful Conquerors.
    Interestingly at Isandlwana the British were utterly routed, you are SA ?

    @hassmanSMO The fight where you believe 15,000 britons died is false. (The Battle of Isandlwana) It was actually 1,500 britons AT THE BATTLE, which at least 100 survived. Also, the fight in the ''town'' (The Battle of Rorke's Drift) was actually a fight around a mission station, with 150 britons and 4,000 zulu's. Also, ''only'' 11 victoria crosses were handed out after the battle of Rorke's Drift, not 20.
