- Unprecedented measures are being enforced right across Italy to try to limit the spread of Coronavirus. As the number of cases and deaths rise sharply Italy faces growing isolation with thousands of flights cancelled and stringent controls on its borders with Austria and Slovenia. Public gatherings including sports events are banned, and schools and universities are closed. Italians are being advised to stay at home. In the UK, a 6th person has died and the number of cases has risen to 382.

Hi everyone, I'm Italian and I live in northern Italy. I see many people in other countries, especially in America, that are underestimating the problem, perhaps because they think it is far from them. But This problem should not be underestimated.
Here in Italy the situation is critical. Hospitals are collapsing and many people die in their homes without medical attention and sometimes without knowing they have the virus. We are all closed in the house and all places are closed and the only noise you hear from outside is the police who invite everyone to not leave the house. Doctors in hospitals are also infected by sick people and therefore there are no health workers. Sorry for my bad English, but I hope you can understand the situation that has arisen here in Italy and understand that this problem is real!
PEOPLE NEED TO STAY INDOOR AND STOP HUGGING AND KISSING LIKE IDIOTS! I've heard in different vlogs that people still carry on with their usual lives, going out in parks and outside in general, cause it's too boring indoors. I hope this changes urgently to have a chance to stop the virus.

i'm from Rimini (206 cases here), Emilia Romagna, Italy . In Italy we can't leave home without authorization and go outside just for go to job or buy essential supplies. i hope this measures will improve the situation because national health system
is under stress and hospitals are almost full in some region (specially in Lombardy). I also hope other countries understands that the only one way to stop this virus is quarantine and force the population

Stay at home and don't go out. Isolation is the most effective way to avoid the spread of the virus. Please wear a mask if you go out. Masks are as important as hand washing. In China, two people buy vegetables in front of the same booth. Three people were infected in just 15 seconds. The shopkeeper, the person who bought food together, was infected by another patient who bought food.

In Australia we have many people of Italian descent with relatives back in Italy. Often elderly Aunties, Uncles, Grandparents etc. I Hope these measures work quickly to bring the epidemic under control. Milan is one of my favourite Italian cities and the people there are very friendly (like Italians in general IMHO). Take care and best wishes.

Try to use oregano oil as much as possible in sprays, as well as eating spicy pepper, I'm not so sure how it affects coronavirus but it is known to be a really strong anti viral natural resource and ancient medicine.

"The virus is killing and taking Italy's dignity with it". I think the journalist wanted to be a poet so bad and then ended up doing something he doesn't love as most of us in a capitalist era. Italians are actually doing what is right to stop the virus as they see the whole planet as one and have more sense of community. UK government? They don't want to stop London? They're scared after Brexit of being reunited with other countries? For those who can see clearly what is going on, make a stand!

Well , I disagree, there was NOT poor surveillance: Italy was among the first countries to make checks at airports and to stop flights from China. I would say the Virus was and is circulating in Europe and whole Europe did not react in time.
The reasons why Italy is so involved are:
1) north Italy is a part of Europe that is full of small-to-big companies, full of small-to-big towns, very connected and, most important, the companies here have huge connections with China (I was told Berlin area is nothing comparable to that)
2) old average age of Italians
3) Social people, that love going out and stay in crowded places (this is no more valid since the country lockdown)
4) we (italians) do search for infected contacts AND test them AND we do report the real data
I believe (just my theory) point 4 is not done in the same way in other countries: the number of tests in UK is lower than in Italy, the numbers in Spain are unknown and so on...

I'm 31 and haven't had a fewer for more than 10 years. I live in Reading and 2 days ago I developed flu like simptoms with high fewer that match the covid 19 simptoms. Went to the hospital they told me to stay at home for 2 days and if I develope complications at breeding I should call them. My girlfriend works in the hospital and we have no idea what to do. She was told to come to work. So if you have simptoms no one will test you only when you develop critical complications... This is retarded...... The government is a joke.

Sir Ab3ee yes its a joke, go back with a written request stating clearly your history and symptoms. Document and have them sign a letter sending you home without a test. Tell them to put whatever they have to say to you in writing. Maybe this will smarten them up. Get these notarized and or witnessed, so you have legal recorse. That's the typical "Containment" procedures, only ring testing of confirmed cases and symptomatic cases that can be contact traced to travel from where the disease has community spread. Once the procedure changes to "mitigation", they might not bother with testing at all as the disease would just be assumed to be prevalent and due to community spread, they may not be able to detect and define the clusters.

You can't see high risk,people.....they are DEAD. The susceptible are the elderly, real young, and those with respiratory disease...asthma, bronchitis, etc. I got the Pneumonia vaccination last week, as they think that helps fight off Covid-19.

Have been to Italy once and really love the people and food there. Right now I am in Wuhan... Well，I need to sit at home every day and our community is locked up. We could get daily necessities delivery service. My suggestion is that we need and must be careful and never think this would not happen to you. I mask up whenever I have to go downstairs to get my daily necessities and I don't take the lift（I live on the 12th floor），and I wear plastic gloves and wash my hands as soon as I get home and then take a shower. Until now still not affected although I live in the center of the outbreak.... apology for the terrible thing which is from China. Italy stay strong！！！

As an Australian living in China, I've been going through the lockdown for almost 4 weeks. The situation is getting better finally.
My experience is don't panic. No panic buy. No catch up with your friends. Stay at home as much as you can. Wash hands, wear the face mask and google/glasses when going out.
Try to read some books or learn some new stuff as you have plenty of spare time at home.
Here an Italian... thank you so much for these tips. Our president already said that we're not going to see an immediate change but that we have to wait at least 2 weeks... One positive thing is that it's so sunny already, and we all know that helps with the mood

Stay strong and safe, Italian friends! A few tips to share since I went on self-isolation with my families for the past 45 days just that I returned to work 2 weeks ago myself. None of my families and people around me have been infected so far.
1. Self-isolation is extremely boring - after two weeks you'd feel such boredom is driving you nuts. But keep staying the heck at home and don't go out. Take this precious time to read some of your favorite books, spend time with your children or parents, play some silly games with your loved ones - if there's no such game, invent one.
2. Pregnant women are most vulnerable because they can't be treated with any kind of medicine. And remember their future babies will most likely contract the virus if they themselves have been infected (it’s proven). People don't understand how dangerous the situation is for these women. I know this because my wife is expecting a baby early April. She hasn't stepped out of our home for so long that her body check yesterday didn't show good signs - confinement plus a little bit depression are very toxic I suppose.
3. Taking hot shower or bath or even sauna definitely help kill the virus. Test results prove that coronavirus can and will be killed when temperature exceeds 54 degree Celsius. This is a cheap and quite available method for most people - and very effective. When you take the hot bath, please try to breathe in hot air (not too hot though) and soak yourself in hot water for as long as you enjoy.
4. As there is no cure or vaccine, your own immune system is your most reliable defence as well as your last stand. To increase your immune system is what you need to do. Forget about your plan of losing weight and eat and sleep well. Without at least 7 hours sleep, your immune system won’t be strong and healthy enough. Drink a lot of milk, eat a lot of meat (chicken soup is very good meal at this critical time, banana will be cathartic to deal with constipation), and don’t do a lot of exercise to stress yourself out unless you are a pro athlete. One thing worth pointing out is that an immune system that’s too strong may not be very helpful in the fight against the virus because it may overact or overkill - it means a very healthy person can’t be too confident.
5. When you go out, face mask is a must. It’s not only for protecting yourself but also others. Some people may wear two layers of disposable mask thinking it’s safer. Don’t. Wearing two masks only forces the air to squeeze in from all corners of your masks instead of passing through.
6. Besides facial masks, disposable gloves and glasses are also helpful. The reason why coronavirus is extremely contagious is because it infects people from all possible ways - air, eyes, contact. So don’t rub your eyes or mouth when you are at a risky place. And keep one meter away from any strangers.
7. If you don’t have hand sanitizer or medical alcohol, no panic. You can simply use table salt to make your own sanitizer or disinfectant because the salt’s crystal structure can pierce or at least weaken the outer jelly layer of the virus. And if you are running short of masks, you can use salty water to wash your used mask and then hang it dry under the sunshine for reuse.
8. The typical CT scanned image of the infected lungs resemble frosted glass. So if nucleic acid test isn’t available, CT scan is also useful and can be quite accurate.
9. The coronavirus symptom is not limited to lungs though. It may also affect liver and heart. A few patients in China were seen drop-dead because of the acute myocarditis resulted from the virus. And there’s an omnipresent fatigue for the patients. So those who already have illness in those parts of the body should be more cautious.
Anyway, just my two cents. Hope this virus may die down soon and return a better Earth to us all. I am from Guangzhou, China and welcome you all to visit my town when better time comes again 😊

Italian user here, I still remember all of this as if it all started just from a very short while. The memories of the empty shelves at the supermarket, the daily death and new infected bulletin on air every evening, the fear to be infected that urged me to sanitize everything in use from the glasses to the shoes after coming back home after work (which I still do nowadays). And all those deserted streets with that heavy silence...
we Chinese also never see that strict quarantine happened in the history. But you know what, after getting used to stay at home, you would not like to go out... haha

Yea, some people fight off the virus and they dont even know it because they dont get ill at all, most people fight off the virus with light symptoms, most of these dont even get tested, the 10000 cases are the people who have a bigger reaction to the virus, so its obvious that in that group it will be more deadly than the median average. The one thing MEDIA dont take into account is the average health of the population the virus hits, Northern Italy is a well know industry zone, most people living there have worse Immune systems from the get-go.

because Italy has alot of elderly i think that explains it better. compare Italy to South Korea..they have almost no deaths and no critical cases soooooo i think it's Italy that did something wrong or they have to much elderly with corona.

I do live in italy, we are now shut down by the government.
No one is allowed to go outside unless it is for serious work or health reasons.
my dad is a nurse and what dr. Osterholm said is true, they really have too choose whom to save and whom to let die.
People are in panic and supermarkets are empty of food.
All the public places are closed, so no parks, gyms, offices, bars and even schools are open. outside the few people you find are afraid of standing near eachother and not even between family we stay phisically closed.
An entire nation is spending but not earning since a week ago, and it will be so till 5th of April atleast.
Life is weird and it feels very weird and scary living in this situation. I'll keep you posted.

That city has been under this conditions for over 15 days, they were already locked in for 15 days, for them yesterday wasn't the first day of "stay home" but something like the 17th-18th day. That's why no new cases there sounds as a good news,but we are talking about a single city, of course all over Italy there have been new cases and we are mainly talking about North and middle Italy, the problem will be when it starts spreading in south Italy

@@thefreemind1531 for that specific city it was a good news because untill the day before they kept on having new cases even if they had to stay in. If you get in contact with someone who has it you have to completely lock in, so you can't get out for work, to go grocery shopping since food it's a first need and not for healthy reasons, for 14 days since this is how long it could take for the virus to show up. If you start showing up anything that could mean that you have the virus you don't have to go to the doctor, you don't have to go to the er, but call the numbers that have been given out and listen to what they tell you and wait for them to come at you place, this to avoid for people to spread the virus even more. Italy knows that, right now, it seems like the highest number of cases will arrive in about 10 days and that for sure the effect of "locking down" the whole country, which yeaterday have been improved even more with closing down, in addition to everything that it's already closed, all shops that don't sell food, bars ans restaurants too , won't be visible before 14 days.

I live in Ontario Canada. A few weeks ago, all the stores around me had piles of masks. Today every store was sold out except Walmart that had 2 packs left. Toilet paper is running low and rubbing alcohol and sanitizer almost sold out everywhere.

i live in bergamo, the city with most cases in the whole country (2800), here doctors work 20 hrs a day, we can’t leave our house without a permission , i haven’t gone out for 2 weeks, my parents are always on call with people to pay respects for their relatives who died. here in lombardy the situation keeps getting worse with 11.000 cases
