    The bullets are a jacketed .303 round, probably. They've got a copper coating on them to reduce lead fouling in barrels which would go a ways to explaining why they are fooling your metal detector.

      Why would so many be in one field do you reckon? Just a farmer with a gun or training from ww2?

      @@LostandFoundRelicCollecting Tricky to say. If it was Canada, a hunting rifle would be a good guess because .303 British ammo from civilian owned Lee Enfields have taken more large game than any other cartridge. I don't know how true that holds up in the UK, but there used to be an extremely vibrant service rifle competitive target circuit in the UK and a lot more people than one might suspect owned some kind of Lee Enfield for such events. The number found suggests a bit of target practice (one is not likely to get off more than a full magazine from a bolt action rifle at a panicked deer) by an individual as opposed to even a small unit marksmanship practice, which would have been literally hundreds of bullets in a series of relatively tight clusters.
