When Eddy came out with this song, I was surprised, because I didn't think he'd ever be recording by then. The song still has all the magic and images in it that I remember, and absolutely nothing was lacking in his amazing voice. He was known as one of the very nicest guys around, and I'm lucky that I came along when I did, and could see him on TV dozens of times. He had his own variety show, and it was swell. I wondered why he put on a tux and sang without playing his guitar, I loved his cowboy clothes, and everybody was well aware that he was an iconic figure of manhood. Handsome, well-spoken, articulate, brilliant, larger than life, kind, strong, and gentle. Not to mention his talent, his love of music, and his willingness to share them with the world. Then he comes out with this song... why shouldn't this song be considered one of the greatest cowboy songs of all time? God must have asked for his autograph, on his first day in Heaven!!! We may have lost a National Treasure, but we have his music and his memories, and he is still very much a force in our lives. I also want to express my gratitude and astonishment to all of Eddy's friends and associates, who did such a masterful job on the production of this recording, you folks are far from forgotten!
I heard this song on KWMT out of Fort Dodge, IA in '76 as a 14yr old, and was captivated by it. I was then delighted to learn of and listen to his '40's-'50's Tennessee Plowboy-era songs, loving them just as much. Then shocked to find he chucked it all and tried to become the Frank Sinatra of whatever-he-thought-he-was-singing-in-a-Tuxedo. Sorry, but to my ears then and now it sounds bland, boring, and uninspired. Don't know why artists have those horrible stretches of awful.
THIS was the song that turned me on to CLASSIC Country music...I was a 16 year old kid working a summer job at Eigenrauch's Egg Farm in Middletown, New Jersey...For 8 weeks I would hear this tune at least a half dozen times a day on the classic country radio station, 1050 WHN, New York City.....amazing after all these years, I can still remember the lyrics from this tune by the legendary Eddy Arnold...
It gives me great pleasure to see this record meant so much to so many. Eddy was a wonderful talent and a very nice man. I wrote the lyrics to this song (to Ron Fraser's melody) way back in 1973-74 when I wasnsigned to ATV Music. Wish someone new would record it again. Thanks for keeping it alive.
Funny how things just “POP” into your head from the past...... This song came to me today, and all I could remember was the beginning.... “ The sky’s are dark and grey, for a week now it’s been raining every day. A Kansas City kid still on the couch trying to rope a stray..... Had no idea of the title or who sang it. Furthermore, I haven’t heard it in probably over 45 years! A quick google search of those lyrics...... And here I am!
I grew up on this song! my mom would put it on the record player every night when my dad was on shift work working nights. fell asleep to it many a night!
I used to work at a country station in new mexico back in the days of 45's and LP's. This one definitely brings back the memories. There never will be another quite like the "Tennessee Plowboy." It was his hard work, raw talent and dedication that paved the way for the Tim McGraws and Kenny Chesneys of the world. THAT, my friends, is the definition of "Country/Western."
In 1981 when my son was 3, he would listen to this song. He would put on his cowboy hat, little jeans, shirt, and boots and six-shooter. and play. all day. Last Thursday Scott passed from liver cancer. he was 36.
Its been long since his passing but know you still miss him. My condolences. We saw our 94 year old uncle breathe his last breath until his heart stopped a few minutes later. Life is precious.❤
I was a fan of Eddy Arnold as a kid. My grandmother had at least one of his albums and I often listened to it, probably in the early 60's (I was born in the mid 50's so didn't have a chance to listen to him back then). I thought Eddy's career was pretty much over when this song hit the airwaves in the 70's (if my calendar is right). It got a lot of play and went high on the charts because Eddy still had 'the right stuff' even then. His relaxed and relaxing voice is still one of a kind. RIP Eddy.
It's really hard for me to put into words how much this song has affected me. When hearing it, it fills me with the most beautiful feeling. I discovered Eddy recently when I attended a Patsy Cline tribute in Berkeley and a man covered one of Eddy's songs "You Don't Know Me" and it brought me to tears in that moment. I went home that evening and searched for the song, only going off the memory of the lyrics i remembered. I found Eddy and now i've been listening to his songs, and like I said I can't put into words how much he means to me. Thank you for uploading!
I've looked for this song for years. I didn't know the title so I had no luck. I saw this and said maybe? Thank you soooooo much for posting.. such a beautiful song from such a wonderful singer.
This song reminds me of when I use to ride my Palimino horse in our back pasture and down the river on a full moonlight night ...when I was around 14 years old.
Is that Audie Murphy in the photo of Eddie Arnold and Roy Rogers? And thanks for posting this great song. I have tried to find this song for years. Used to wake up to it on my clock radio back at Ole Miss in 1976.
Harry, I am honored that you replied to my post "Eddy Arnold Cowboy" and you wrote the lyrics makes it even more of a honor!! I am always searching for undiscovered Talent out there and it's getting harder every day finding new artist, When I say new I mean something I have missed. ........ You want to find the truth in life? Don't pass music by And you know I would not lie, no, I would not lie, Eric Burdon "Monteray"
Just finished mixing a cover of this wonderful classic by Catherine Thompson. Can't wait for it to be released in a few days. Hopefully we'll have it mastered by tomorrow.
The skies are dark and gray For a week now it's been raining every day And the Kansas City Kid Is on the couch still trying to rope a stray Well he's Crockett and he's Custer And he's Hickok's right hand man He's trying to tame the west But Mom don't seem to understand And she's told him to get ready Cause it's the time for bed And how he wishes he were free Cause he was simply born to be A cowboy Asleep he rides the range On a saddle that has seen its better days And hear the coyotes call They sing the sun to rest as evening falls Well, make a pot of coffee, boys So strong you taste the grain Stretch out on your blanket As he clears his throat to sing Keep you eyes upon him With his Gary Cooper grin It doesn't take much sense to see That he was simply born to be A cowboy This concrete city's fenced him in Can't win 'em all but he'll be on his feet again He'll ride his fantasies till then Don't he take after me he was simply born to be A cowboy The skies are dark and gray For a week now it's been raining every day But the Kansas City Kid Is all tucked in and dreaming of the range A cowboy, a cowboy

Your Dear Mum Has Great Taste In Music

Great song. Eddy Arnold is the best country singer. No.1. Nobody beat him and I missed him too.
The best singer is Johnny Cash.

Love this song! It comes on the local oldies station sometimes and I love it so that I'll drive a bit extra when it's on to hear all of it. 😌
Love his vocal range! One of a kind.

My jams
This song didn't hit #1 on the charts as written in the description, but it did hit the top 20. A really good song.
It was briefly Too 5 on the Billboard country chart if memory serves. Been a long, long time.
A memory of my mother from my childhood. I wasn't sure of the name of the song

The skies are dark and gray
For a week now it's been raining every day
And the Kansas City Kid
Is on the couch still trying to rope a stray
Well he's Crockett and he's Custer
And he's Hickok's right hand man
He's trying to tame the west
But Mom don't seem to understand
And she's told him to get ready
Cause it's the time for bed
And how he wishes he were free
Cause he was simply born to be
A cowboy
Asleep he rides the range
On a saddle that has seen its better days
And hear the coyotes call
They sing the sun to rest as evening falls
Well, make a pot of coffee, boys
So strong you taste the grain
Stretch out on your blanket
As he clears his throat to sing
Keep you eyes upon him
With his Gary Cooper grin
It doesn't take much sense to see
That he was simply born to be
A cowboy
This concrete city's fenced him in
Can't win 'em all but he'll be on his feet again
He'll ride his fantasies till then
Don't he take after me he was simply born to be
A cowboy
The skies are dark and gray
For a week now it's been raining every day
But the Kansas City Kid
Is all tucked in and dreaming of the range
A cowboy, a cowboy
