  • Your adventure in Killarney National Park starts and Ross Castle near the town of Killarney. We have a boat ride through the Lakes of Killarney, three interconnected lakes: Lough Leane or the Lower Lake, Lake Muckross or the Middle Lake and the Upper Lake. The waters of the three lakes meet at a single point, known of course as the Meeting of the Waters. From the end of the Upper Lake we take a Jarvie through the Gap of Dunloe . The Jarvie is a two-wheeled cart drawn by a single horse. In our case, her name was Daisy and she was an Irish Cob.

Thanks for your lovely pictures and commentary. I had a very similar experience to yours on the lakes of Killarney in May of 2000, The boat carried me, my rental bike, and a number of other tourists, mostly German as I recall. We followed the same route as yours through the lakes and I biked back to Killarney after the boat ride. So little seems to have changed there in the last 20 plus years, I remember all the horse carts. The BnB I was staying in was about a mile or so up the road from Ross Castle. The Boat ride was spectacular and the bike ride back to Killarney a blast. Lots of building was going on in Killarney during my stay, I hope the town hasn't changed too much. Glad to see the lakes and surrounding haven't been built up; Look forward to seeing the rest of your chapters!

I was over there over 10 years ago and I took the pony and cart, but I wanted to take the pony that they hired out but they were all hired by the time I finished my Irish coffee and stew at Lord Brandon’s cottage. Do they still hire ponies to ride through the gap?

When we were there, our pony and cart ride had been reserved by our travel agent ahead of time as part of the tour. So our ride was waiting for us.

@@dandsclark Thanks for your quick answer, when I was there, I was only one person, and I was added
to the to group of the boat and so when I arrived at the cottage after my meal which I paid for, I could choose whether I wanted a horse and cart, hiking or a saddle horse to hire and I wanted to ride, but they’re all taken by the time I finished my second Irish coffee. :)
It had been a very rainy cold day, but then it was sunny after I finished my Irish stew
