A helpful discussion might be to ask why a fine textured titanium non-integral Holt Haptic or Specter in M390, for example, is OK at $900 or more but this fine textured titanium integral in M390 isn't OK at $600. Or the Shirogorovs you mentioned at the same price. Or how about a crazy-priced Norseman? If the knife is otherwise excellent, and shortcomings vs. these others can't be identified (can they? @@capone_rd_809 I mean by comparison. The examples left in the first comment weren't fair comparisons. They aren't made in China. The knife in the video is. Im putting this knife up against similar models made in China and this is laughably overpriced. That's basically it.
I bought one, and I own many integrals and really nice knives...and I agree the asking price is high, but boy do I freaking love this knife. It really is a awesome knife, barring the price
I'm certainly not an expert, but some of the design features on this knife look deceptively complex to manufacture. Not sure $600 is justified, but I think the machining must be nuts.
Agree I own the all black and the stainless version. I love both but carry the stainless more. This is by far my favorite knife and doubt I’ll ever meet someone personally that has the same knife.
@@aaronmichaelwilkie9593It’s really not. Crk is made in USA. James brand uses Reate to oem his knives. Reate is a great oem but the price is typically $300-450 for there OEMed knives of this caliber. hot take: different pivot screw torx sizes are nice because you have t6 and t8 driver and dont need a second t8 driver. But T6 is to small for a pivot imho.
I've been carrying a BM Anthem purchased used for a couple of years now and still love it. It's over an ounce lighter for the same blade length, cheaper (until discontinued), similar blade steel (20CV) and completely ambidextrous (I'm a lefty) compared to this. Just replaced the clip with a BM deep-carry clip from the Contego and it's the perfect knife for me. I know BM gets knocks for QC but my blade centering and edges are perfect on both of mine. But I remember when the Anthem was released everyone complained about the price. But this knife certainly looks very nice. But no, it's not worth $600 to me.

Show me a reate made integral knife for less, I'm not defending James brand you are correct they charge more for what it's worth. But this knife was made by reate the price is going to be high now add the fact that it's an integral. Show me a integral knife made by any company besides twosuns less then 400 bucks.
The Reate Jack 1 and 2 are both substantially less expensive at base, and they're using the same materials (+CF). They're also more complicated in construction. The pricing on on The Barnes is kind of a joke.
@thedog556 to save 100 bucks or more if you care about money. Not sure the reasoning for your reply, of course there are plenty of better options than this in that price point besides just crk but crk is simple and high quality like this.
@thedog556 still not sure what you're arguing about of course you can get all those and add hoback, olamic, hinderer, etc to the list. I have most of them and I wouldn't buy this.
@thedog556 okay sorry you feel that way. Many would argue that saying "recommending crk is stupid" is stupid. 🤷♂️ I'd recommend almost anything over this, I've never seen any complaints from crk owners including myself.
@thedog556 you are all over the place with your reasoning and examples. Buy what you want. No one is trying to stop you. But the fact is that Chris Reeve knives are absolutely legendary in terms of quality and design. The framelock was literally invented by Chris Reeve, so you have him to thank for every framelock in existence. Yours is the type of comment I would expect from someone who is very new to all this. I'm not trying to insult you at all, but I'm going to explain a few things, and give you some elements to consider: First off, the "base price" of a CRK is generally - SMALL $375 , LARGE $450. It only goes beyond that if you're buying something dressy. CRKs are manufactured in the US. This a major factor for many people, and it plays a huge role in pricing. They're largely considered to be an incredible value for a TRULY USA manufactured knife. Medfords are traditionally compared in the opposite fashion here. I.E. - "Why would you buy a Medford when you can buy a Chris Reeve?" is a MUCH more common comment. Medfords are fine, but generally not considered to be on the same level as a CRK when you're talking about a precision cutting tool. (CRKs are definitely designed better when it comes down to actually carrying and using it). Medfords also generally cost more for relatively similar materials. And in my opinion, they're not "up to par" in 2021. Shirogorovs are definitely not normally priced similarly to CRKs. That's a poor example. They're in a totally different caliber as well, which is appropriate considering their production models average $800-$900. Chaves? You mean the Ultramar and Liberation? Those are made by Reate in China. That's why they cost less. I love my 229 Ultramar, but it doesn't hold a candle to the cutting performance of Chris Reeve knives. It's also not easy to carry at all by contrast. Comparing to WE makes no sense at all. Again, CRKS are manufactured in the US. WE is China. The Slysz Bowie is the only relatively good example and it's sold out currently. Keep in mind though that the recent revival of the Slysz Bowie priced at $400 was one of the biggest knife world controversies of 2021. So while it's your best example, it's still not a great one. Most would still choose a CRK for the money, and that's a fact you can't argue around given the evidence of the Slysz Bowie backlash. So why buy a Chris Reeve? No one is asking that question because it's obvious. People already buy them. They know what their buying. CRK has a potent legacy and the knives will continue to be an integral part of knife community culture. Your value system is weird man. No judgement, but don't be surprised when your opinions are met with consitent confusion and criticism. Not very many people are going to agree with you. Again, buy what makes you happy, but don't tell anyone else they're "stupid" for making certain purchase decisions.
Regarding the pivot screws being different sizes, if it's one of those situations where you need to hold one screw while turning the screw on the other side then I can see why they would use two different size screws. If you have only 1 torx set then you most likely don't have two of every size. So having two different sized screws would allow you to take it apart with only 1 torx set. On the other hand, if it's the case where you don't need to hold one side while unscrewing the other then idk what the hell they were thinking lol.
The aesthetics are phenomenal, IMO. I wish I could throw around $600 without thinking about it. I would buy a dozen and give one to everyone who complained about the cost. But alas, it looks like I'm stuck with my lowly Spydercos, Benchmades, and Twosuns.
@thedog556 how much it costs to make, hence James Brand is profiting of you way way more than Benchmade was, and its always good to support domestic manufacturing.
@@pauldelasco exactly, the Instagram edc crowd. One of my best friends takes pics of prybars and hankies all day. Weird stuff, 90% of them never use any of it. They're in it for the likes

I worked at an online knife retailer. In the company, james brand was very popular among branding, marketing, creatives and the like - younger, (well payed) trendy people who definitely didn't carry a knife before coming to work there, but still had to know about blade steel and whatever. There was a definite overlap between those with macbooks and james brands... hey at least they're trying
Demkos knives are time proven, his take on locks is genius, he has a very well known name in the knife world, and, has many designs people love. His are usually custom or close to it. This is a new kid on the block with a pretty normal integral frame lock. Maybe if it was a CRK or a brand that has actually proved themselves through time.. maybe. But then again some people like this knife, and, spend the $600 for it. So in their mind it's worth it. But I can see why a lot of people are a little twisted by the price point.
Demko is made in America, and this community just can't seem to cope with the fact that nothing American made in the knife market can compete in terms of quality with a Reate like this. Yes even at $600 you still need to spend more for something from Koenig to have a chance.
@@BloodRaven1011 what? Reate is amazing, of course... But to say that nothing in America can compete with reate? 😂 There are ZTs that are cheaper and just as nice... Do they have the selection that reate does? No. But the small selection they have now a days are some of the best knives for the money. They are also cheaper. I'm only bringing in one US production company. I don't feel like making a list. It's just uninformed to say that nothing in America can compete with reate. 😂. Also a part of making a production knife is labor... Paying the employees. Do you think a Chinese company pays their employees anything close to the American brands? Uh... No. When you buy an American knife and paying more for it. Its because people are actually getting paid for their work. Shit America could bring the cost down on our products a whole shit ton if we were to use slave labor.
I wonder if the T6 vs. T8 thing is a nod to people who only have one torx bit set. If you're using your T8 to unscrew it, but need another T8 on the other side to keep it from spinning, you need another bit or set. But if you can use your T6, even just holding it in your fingers, you don't have to buy anything else. It's otherwise a puzzler as you say, but this is the only reason I can think of that they might have done that.
Yeah price is up there. The “Diamond Cat symbol”.... maybe it’s an Arrow head. The coin has traditional arrow head on one side and looks like a digital version of it on the other.
I knew I'd be in the minority on this knife but personally love this knife. Some will say I'm dumb, but I got this version and the micarta inlay version. Has pretty much dominated my pocket since I've gotten it. I won't argue with others on the price, to each their own, but I don't really have a huge issue with it. All I knew of James Brand was seeing the Carter and thinking "VG10...no thanks" but saw this and saw Reate, integral, love the design, etc. and said "gimme!" Again, I understand those saying the price is too high, but kind of a shame as this is a fantastic knife! *flame shield on*
Norris, in the exact video you're referencing I said loud and clear that the DLC Anax was wildly overpriced. Stop trying to stir the pot for a few measley likes.
The first thought I had when I saw this for sale while browsing a while back was, "$600? My god, you can get a Shiro for that!" So yes, I absolutely agree. Man, it's really really nice & well made...for $400-$450.
Thanks for the honest review. I kind of like it a lot. The price is kind of ehh.. But it’s not a deal breaker when you’re looking formpocket jewelry. I was mostly interested in the action because many people said the Carter action was really bad, but none of the too reviewers even bothered to review it. Sounds like many people hate it just because of their price and marketing. I can’t think of a more luxurious piece than this one. As long as it performs, then this is the Mercedes while the Sebenza is the Volkswagon and the hinderer is the F150.
Overpriced? Yes. However this knife is fuccking awesome. The hand feel is insane, the overall quality is grail status and without a doubt for me at least, its the design. Seriously nothing else comes close to it, for me its perfection. Everyone needs to settle down and stop pretending we don't over pay for sharp pieces of metal again and again.
the only way I can get the t6 and t8 combination to make sense is that most torx kits come with only 1 of each, and if the pivot isn't locked in place, you'll need to brace one screw and turn the other. So having 2 different sizes means each torx set will have enough bits to open the pivot up. But yeah +1 for T10...or be like Medford and do T30 ahahahaha
I totally agree MC. But that said, I REALLY want to hear what someone from James brand has to say about it. Are they happy with the number of sales? Do they regret pricing it so high? The overall opinion from basically the whole online knife community is that it's way overpriced. I can't deny it's a very nice knife and they did almost everything right (I'm not a fan of the thumbstud at all) but that price almost had to guarantee the sales are no where near as high as other brands selling similar knives. Thanks for the quality content @metal_complex !
T6 on show side and T8 on the back side of the pivot makes the most sense. This way, most people who probably have one set of drivers (most of James brand target market) can open it with the one set of drivers; and at the same time, the show side is less industrial looking with a T6.
This is only the second knife I've ever seen that has a one piece titanium grip like that. The other one is the Spyderco Paysan and I know those were expensive at around $650.
@@metal_complex Right on, thanks for the reply! I'm pretty new to these higher end knives, but I've been a big fan of Spyderco for years. I currently have a Paramilitary 2 with black blade and grip, a Para 3, also with black blade and grip, and I just got a Spydiechef. I'm really wanting to get a Spyderco Drunken next, or maybe a Zero Tolerance 0308. This Spydiechef is my first frame lock knife I have owned, and the Drunken just looks like an enhanced Spydiechef to me. I think the ZT 0308 looks cool because I've never had a flipper or a ball bearing pivot knife. Either one would be a significant purchase for me, and be the most expensive knife I have owned so far. Sorry for rambling; I've been really liking your videos since I discovered them recently!
@jibjones123 That's too bad. I have never even seen a Spyderco Paysan in person, but in the catalog it looks pretty awesome. I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger on a $440 Spyderco Drunken, so I don't think I could convince myself to get a Paysan, even if I found one!
Is there a list of knives sold by X brand that are made by Reate? None of the Reate brand knives in stock at bladeHQ catch my eye but I’d like to own something that they actually built.
FYI, that T6 on the show side is probably just to align the pivot during reassembly, as it prob has a “notch” holding it in place like other makers use (WE, Civivi), I bet it doesn’t spin if you turn it.
I thank they might have been smart with the pivot hardware, if it isn't d-shaped then the t6 on one side and then on the other makes sense, gives you the opportunity to disassemble it with one single bit set, not two like other knives with free spinning pivots and t8s on both sides
Well, if you think $599 is expensive (which it is) it‘s a good thing you don‘t live here in Germany. On their EU website they sell that same version for 650 Euros! That‘s about $790. And they are all sold out anyway. It‘s insane. And I say that as someone who actually likes The James Brand and owns a bunch of their knives. Oh, and as for the logo, I also used to think it was a fox or such. Nope, it‘s just upside down. It‘s an arrowhead. Just like the one on the coin.
Oh by the way MC the Arius costs $650 now, at least from DLT. Although that includes the version with the milled scales and the ones with the ano’d hardware.
Totally agree on the ridiculous overpricing. Couple of things noticed randomly. The logo is, I believe, a geometric representation of an arrowhead, as shown on the two sides of the coin. A 'minimalist' view of one, if you will. As to the mismatched torx on the pivot, going with their minimalist philosophy, while most of us have multiple torx sets, if you only have one you still have a T6 and a T8 to use on both sides of the pivot while many people may not have two T8s. Total assumptions on my part though.
Their STP results must have defined their target market in a way that suggested the MSRP of this knife would be viewed as an aesthetic. Setting that guess aside, the knife looks nice and I like Reate about as much as you do, MC. $600 is gross and I like $350-$400(max) on this one a lot more.
Idk, BRS made a Isham designed integral with the exact same materials for under 300, so I still don't see this being over 500 bucks...that is just crazy. I do like the design though.
Sooo... I would never buy this knife for $600 dollars. But. For that price... I'd buy this before I'd get an XM-18, or even an inlayed Sebenza. No knife is "value" for money at this price, but I'd argue this is actually better than most. Edit: I should specify, better for me. It better fits what I desire in a knife than several other $600 options.
I keep gravitating back to this knife.... I'm probably going to own one someday even though I dislike the marketing... I'm not a hipster 😆 But the design is just aesthetically pleasing to my eyes.
I'm glad hear your opinion of their pricing. It certainly agrees with mine. I will never own anything from james brand unless you or someone else seems me one.
@@dfailsthemost yes. When I worked in engineering (machine tool maintenance), used to see many patterned tool attachments. Some of these tools are laser etched, according to customer requirements. Yes they are used on cnc machines but can be fixed to a tailstock on a centre lathe. They generally have a short life, obviously depending on the metal used. Pure titanium is quite soft, there are many alloys made depending on its use. Worked for a company called NCMT (numerically controlled machine tools), some of these complex machines cost millions. Regular maintenance is needed and repairs run into thousands The companies who buy these need to get their money back so hence high costs.
If the Spyderco Slysz Bowie is worth $400, then, given the milling, fancy clip, integral handle, hand rubbed blade, manufacturer clout, and of course the coin, this would be worth the $600 price tag. I think it's just to artificially inflate the prestige of the James Brand brand.
So I have to ask. You say in EVERY integral video that you love them "partly" because they're just so easy to take apart and such. Have you ever taken one or 2 apart? Because I've had probably around 20 or more integrals and I've taken them all apart more than once. Integrals are absolutely positively more difficult to take apart and put back together. And yes, the extra cut out around the pivot is for the bearings and such. It'd be impossible to get that stuff in without the cut out. I just had to ask. I have yet to take apart 1 integral that's easy to put back together. They're ALWAYS difficult, and that's because it has to be perfect or it won't work. Thanks for the content. God bless
Price is subjective. It checks all the boxes for me. And it is one hell of a beauty. The fact that i bought one says its worth it to me. Had a chance to get a user Barnes for $475 but it had a lot of blade scratches and blemishes. 🤷🏽♂️🙃
I've always wondered why everyone, not just you MC, says PM2 and Para 3, instead of PM2 and PM3, or Para 2 and Para 3, I'm excited to get my flytamium micarta scales for my PM2
Agree on the price, ridiculous, especially sense you can get a Quiet Carry Waypoint or large IQ at half the price, and they are incredibly made using quality materials and inside milling.
16:10 Lmao "diddily doodley" got me good. I have one knife with a lanyard and a combat bead on it and that's because it doesn't have a pocket clip. Otherwise I don't understand the "diddily doodleys" but hey its out of the way!
I find the price of this insane compared to just about anything except the large sebenza (which I think one could argue this is a similar knife but as an integral with better materials), which then makes me question if that knife is just overpriced too. I finally got to handle one at blade show, but walked right back to the hinderer booth and got my first xm-18 instead with $100 leftover for another knife!
It's SO beautiful but I can almost buy a gun for that price tag! If I decide to buy a upper-middle end knife (so far my most expensive is SOG Seal XR) I'm eyeing the We Knives Thug.
@@metal_complex Fair enough. I won't disagree that $450-500 would be a fairer price on the Barnes. I'm fortunate enough to be eligible for the GovX discount so I got mine for $480 and I have no regrets. I also own Shirogorovs, Koenigs, Skiffs, Holts; so while dropping nearly $500 on a knife isn't insignificant for me, I'm kind of accustomed to the sticker shock. I'll just add that if you plan on disassembling the knife, do not try to remove the lockside pivot screw (yeah, the T8 one). Remove the dinky little T6 pivot screw and then the entire pivot collar/lockbar overtravel, T8 screw, and pivot barrel come out on the lockside as one assembly. Just some friendly advice. P.S. I may not entirely agree with all your points but I can't deny that you always put out great content!
Yessss i totally agree with u ... since knives have been around for 4000 years there will always be a knife that looks like someone elses! But that price..😳😳😳😳😳😳
I was excited when I saw it till I saw the price. Its a $350-400 knife even with the micarta inlay. I mean when I got my GiantMouse GM6 that is also a integral made by Reate it was $365 and only 300 I think were ever made in the version I have at least and 100 made in the GM6P blacked out version unless it was 200 and 100 either way its pretty limited. I am sure this knife is limited as well but its priced so damn high it doesn't mean anything lol. So many knives out there that are so much more desirable for that price or less it makes no sense to even consider buying. I have seen a couple for sale 2nd hand and even the $475 they wanted is to much.
This knife is built exceptionally well, I don’t have a problem paying $650 for it. Hell I have knives that cost in excess of a thousand dollars that aren’t built this well.
Even if I could spend the amount of money they're asking, I just can't get past that their company is called The James Brand and it says James on everything.

Great point!
I think the T6 was chosen to maintain the aesthetics of the pivot.

The Reate Jack 1 and 2 are both substantially less expensive at base, and they're using the same materials (+CF). They're also more complicated in construction. The pricing on on The Barnes is kind of a joke.
@@JackFrost-hj3cp Lionsteel...?
Holy shmoly, 600 buckaroonies. That's a 350 dollhair knife, get a Chris Reeve instead and save some money.
I'm not trying to insult you at all, but I'm going to explain a few things, and give you some elements to consider:
First off, the "base price" of a CRK is generally - SMALL $375 , LARGE $450.
Good point
The aesthetics are phenomenal, IMO. I wish I could throw around $600 without thinking about it. I would buy a dozen and give one to everyone who complained about the cost. But alas, it looks like I'm stuck with my lowly Spydercos, Benchmades, and Twosuns.
The Giantmouse GM6 integral, made by Reate, and a limited edition was only $365
LOL, this knife is so overpriced. The benchmade anthem was $400 and made in America.
@thedog556 how much it costs to make, hence James Brand is profiting of you way way more than Benchmade was, and its always good to support domestic manufacturing.

I just subscribed like this week, why is it every time I watch your videos I want to go out and buy a knife? 😂
I'm not sure I understand the reaction about the price when nobody seems to have an issue with the price of the last Demko?
What do they want it’s an integral look at a rassenti
@@BloodRaven1011 what? Reate is amazing, of course... But to say that nothing in America can compete with reate? 😂
There are ZTs that are cheaper and just as nice...
That makes sense 😅

Looks like a poly owl design to me. I really like it
I knew I'd be in the minority on this knife but personally love this knife. *flame shield on*

the only way I can get the t6 and t8 combination to make sense is that most torx kits come with only 1 of each, and if the pivot isn't locked in place, you'll need to brace one screw and turn the other. So having 2 different sizes means each torx set will have enough bits to open the pivot up. But yeah +1 for T10...or be like Medford and do T30 ahahahaha
Exactly. I think T6 on the show side is to keep the James Brand look instead of adding industriousness.
So, with an integral, is blade centering strictly up to the precision of the machining since you can't shear the two sides of the frame?
I would assume so, ya
@16:17 yes that was absolutely bothering me 😂
I totally agree MC.
A new Paysan is coming
I like the Clovis point on the coin. It looks identical to an authentic 12,000-15,000 year old one I found in Tennessee years ago
Just picked up the DLC version on secondary for $350 in good condition then junked on your content on it. Can’t wait to get it in hand.
$600 is a chunk of change but after seeing how their other stuff is priced I’m actually surprised it’s not more.
Would love a review and comparison with the new TJB The Kline.
James Brand; the Apple of the knife industry.
I'm not a hipster 😆
But the design is just aesthetically pleasing to my eyes.

@@metal_complex Yeah, definitely.
@@Countryboy071 cool tool
@@dfailsthemost yes. When I worked in engineering (machine tool maintenance), used to see many patterned tool attachments. Some of these tools are laser etched, according to customer requirements. Yes they are used on cnc machines but can be fixed to a tailstock on a centre lathe. They generally have a short life, obviously depending on the metal used.
Pure titanium is quite soft, there are many alloys made depending on its use.
Worked for a company called NCMT (numerically controlled machine tools), some of these complex machines cost millions.
Regular maintenance is needed and repairs run into thousands
The companies who buy these need to get their money back so hence high costs.
The reate krypton by tashi is 500$ for the large mokuti with a kickstop. Might not be integral.
If the Spyderco Slysz Bowie is worth $400, then, given the milling, fancy clip, integral handle, hand rubbed blade, manufacturer clout, and of course the coin, this would be worth the $600 price tag. I think it's just to artificially inflate the prestige of the James Brand brand.

agree with this completely. i want to love this knife. at 399 id buy one.
God bless
Cut the price tag in half and you might have something worth getting.
Price is subjective. It checks all the boxes for me. And it is one hell of a beauty. The fact that i bought one says its worth it to me. Had a chance to get a user Barnes for $475 but it had a lot of blade scratches and blemishes. 🤷🏽♂️🙃

Is it me or does that stop pin seem a little small for the knife size?
Na. It's fine
Such a beautiful knife. I love it. Especially the micarta version.
I don't know... $500 for a non-integral Hinderer XM-18 with a G-10 handle vs $600 (now $650) for this knife seems about right.

I complained about the Satori 2.0. There were quite a few people who agreed I the comments section of that video as well.
