Dave I caught my first ever Northern Pike on the Red Cedar River in Williamston, Michigan last week... 27 inches & a blast to catch on a Zoom White Lizard. Not my target species, but had my fish grippers handy.
Nice work. Congrats
Good PSA.
Catching pike is a right of passage for angler's here in Ontario. Big ones are good eating and good fighting.
My only other recommendations to the reader is having a rubber net handy if you aren't confident with your pike handling. They like to spin, which is terrible if you have a mesh net.
But yep, grab back of head and under the gill, but don't reach too far up the gill! Walleye are similar, also sharp teeth. Pike are actually pretty easy since they don't have dorsal spines, unlike a lot of other common sport fish.
One of my favorite fish to catch
I like em too 💪
Caught my first pike tonight. 30” on a large spoon. Thanks for the tip
Some good advice there. It’s all about confidence. My first couple I got gill scraped but had no issues from then and I chin them almost every time. I tend to try leave in the water as much as possible if it’s not a specimen, it’s just nicer for the fish and less stress for both parties. Only issue is deep hooking but unless you’re using live/dead bait that’s not normally an issue.
We have lots of regulations on pike fishing in England which I partly agree with but if you treat the fish well then they’re never in any danger at any time of year 👍🏼
Yeah deep hooking is a pain. Always feel bad for the fish when that happens. I do my best to care for the fish and make sure they go back in the water healthy.
@@FonicsSuck yeah that’s all you can do and sometimes its just one of those things you can’t avoid. I caught one 2 days ago that had wire hanging out it’s throat so I cut it as far down as I could and hope it rejects it or passes through.
Good job
Nice Dave and they don't taste bad either
Had a big and a decent near Ogdensburg on a hair jig. Was great fight but crazy trying to get that hook out without grabbing them. Does gill plate have a sharp bone that will cut you?
I've never been cut by there gills but I'm not sure I've had many pike swallow my lures ik how it is
Slime Rocket Wrangling
Yeeewwww!
Just need to grab them slime rockets and squeeze until they squeal. Then rinse the stink slime off your hands.
