Bit late to the party but some might read it. I like Dan was lucky in getting my training in aviation. I had never been in an aircraft in my life but after 3 day assessment was selected for an airline sponsored CPL/IR course and 15 months later was flying in the airline.
After 8 years, being made redundant and 3 postings away I had had enough of managers controlling my home lifestyle, and as I was part-way through a Law Degree I quit to become an Aviation Lawyer.
Later in life I went back to flying, for a much better management and ended up as a B737 Captain.
Criminally underrated. Love your videos and your insight. We all have our path in life. You've worked hard, served your country with distinction and taken full advantage of the opportunities presented to you. We all need luck in life but it's what we do with it that counts. My definition of success is the choices it enables you to have. You have plenty. Well done! 👍

I'm a Firefighter/Paramedic. Other then the $1200 for the initial EMT class, I haven't spent a dime getting any other training. My extremely expensive Paramedic training was paid for by a private ambulance company in exchange for hours worked. My Firefighting training and the gear we trained with, was paid for by a volunteer fire department. When I got hired at my current agency I was the only one of five applicants who made it through the process. There were three openings.
For quite a while I felt like "I only got hired because I have the cards and a pulse" or "I didn't have to work too hard for this, maybe I don't belong."
So I decided that even if I was hired for that reason I'd work hard enough, be passionate enough, and go above and beyond enough that even if they hired me because there was no one else they'd want to keep me.
Your last two videos have been very relatable.
You're journey is awesome... getting into Army Aviation was definitely a crucible in and of itself, and highly coveted. I love the Kiowa! They were great guardians to us 82nd guys. I was on the ground in Fallujah when Kim Hamptons Kiowa was shot down. Was a tough day. Thank you for protecting us from the air!

Hello Mr. King. I found this channel through the “I quit the airlines” video, being an aspiring airline pilot, that video was of interest to me. As a homeschooled high schooler, I love the channel name. But that isn’t the only thing I love about this channel. The editing and cinematography, are insane! Thanks for all the hard work that I know goes into these very professional videos. As soon as I found your channel, I was an instant fan. I know that if you keep doing what you are doing, that one day you will have inspired a lot of people. Keep it up!

Super inspiring reflection. As a former military guy who got out to chase the flying career--I'm glad you're normalizing the feelings of self doubt and wandering that occur. There is no right answer on any career path. Just because someone endured hardship to reach their goal shouldn't devalue the work you put it to get where you're at. All the haters need to take a lesson in humility. Congrats on the new gig and keep up the great videos!

Hey Dan, my name is Keilyn, and I recently discovered your videos a few days ago. I just wanted to say that even when you get that feeling like you don't belong in aviation, you absolutely do. I'd like to emphasize that everyone's journey in aviation is unique, and not everyone will have a "trial by fire" experience. For instance, I'm currently going through some financial challenges while completing my training at school, and it has been a tough journey, but I remain positive, counting my blessings. I know that when I reach my goal of flying for the airlines and possibly the military, it will all be worth it in the end.
I also appreciate that you've worked hard and proven yourself to be in aviation, despite feeling like an imposter at times. Many people support you, and you've certainly earned your place in this field. It's not just about being well-prepared or budgeting effectively; it's also your determination and drive that got you here.
I want to reassure you that you belong in aviation, even if you sometimes doubt it. You deserve to be here, and you should not only count your blessings but also feel grateful for the support system you have, from your wife to your family and your military service. Thanks for your service and making use of the G.I. Bill to get your licenses.
You mentioned SkyWest taking a chance on you, and I believe they recognized your structure and discipline, which is highly valued in aviation, especially if you come from a military aviation program. So don't ever feel like you don't belong in this industry, or that your path was easier than others'. Everyone has their unique journey, and yours has its own set of challenges.
Keep up the great work with your videos; I appreciate your content and your unique perspective on aviation. Keep doing what you're doing!

Your videos are fantastic. Earlier this year I ran across your flight bag video in preparation for attending Flight School in May. The videos you make bring a fresh perspective of an industry that feels really sterile. Your channel kind of put the nail in the coffin for my career shift showing there’s room for growing a family and maintaining sanity in Aviation.
I went from zero time in May to taking my CFI check ride tomorrow and seeing your video was a nice break from studying. Thank you for your content! Keep it shiny side up!

As one who went into the crucible, I get what your saying. But, don’t ever beat yourself up for having good timing. Timing is everything in the industry and you made your own luck with wise choices. But I can identify; I didn’t have to go through a life of crime and a meth addiction to find Jesus. Sometimes I feel like I missed out…… actually that part isn’t true at all…… I’m eternally grateful I avoided meth and just found Jesus. Be the same way about aviation brother…. Great video! You do really good work.

I also resonate with your feelings of imposter syndrome! I can all easily feel like I don’t belong (in aviation) or not “qualified”. Maybe not in the literal sense of qualifications but in the journey it took for us to get there. The feelings of “not fitting the mold” can really make you feel out of place but honestly I think it can be empowering too! Every journey is unique and that’s how I’ve tried to embrace it for me!

I'm confused. How is the schedule of a 91k operator a better fit for someone with a nurse wife (unless she quit hospital shift work) and gradeshool age kids. Didn't he quit the regionals over essentially scheduling conflicts with the home life? Isn't NJ like 7/7 or worse (8/6 on the CC72 schedules). The only thing I can think of is the positive space commute to the aircraft, but that's still a commute.
Nice story, and probably you payed your dues way better that anybody else..flying a single engine helicopter in combat in Afghanistan,requires discipline, mental strength and sacrifice among others..specially with the 82d Combat Aviation Brigade..I was there at the same deployment in Shank with the Chinooks..Many times the Kiowas saved us..Thanks for your service

So I was right about my last comment on your last vid! Im prior army 68w with 1328 hours. Trying to figure out what I’m doing next but regional fo hiring has kinda halted. Thanks for serving!! My old Army roommate got blackhawks.
Build up some more time and skip the regionals! Look at Spirit and Frontier. You’d be surprised.

Dan, remember when you got your private pilot fixed wing license in like... *checks calendar* 8 days? You worked hard and you deserve to be here. While our peers were working on getting their seniority number, you were out serving our country in the best way you knew how. Loved the outro and congratulations on the new gig!

I fell into aviation thanks to the Army and fell into the airlines thanks to your Infinity videos and RTAG. So far it works ok for me and my family, but I am definitely not tied to it permanently… I love flying, but part of me wants to be a farmer 🤣🤣 Seriously though, I’m always keeping my ears open to see what God does next. And man, I feel you on the imposter thing. Lots of reasons probably, but nice to know I’m not the only one!
A wise man told me that the best aviators are the ones you would never know were aviators. I think it’s because having the desire to do something other than fly makes a well-rounded person, and those are typically better to fly with.
Hey brother, I did ten years enlisted in the Marines and did 2 combat deployments 2010 and 2012 as infantry. Like HARD deployments.. Currently CFI approaching my RATP.. I got out of the marines and went to school using GIBILL. we all have different routes. but i feel better flying and being around military guys if im being totally honest..

Dan, your crucible may still lie ahead of you, just like the pilots who went thru 9/11 and 2008. Perhaps they had smoother times before that. So just enjoy the ride and the view at FL370 and prepare for any downturns that may (will) still be out there.
Not to mention your year in afcrapistan, away from family, is crucible enough for anybody. Go forth with confidence.

Having flown with help guys they are a different breed. Unfortunately a lot of my horror stories cane from them. I think many go on to he good pilots but they are not as cohesive in the cockpit and a bit off.
