  • Time for another colonoscopy! This was not the video I intended to make, but hopefully you can still learn from my experiences (both regarding colonoscopies AND double checking your microphone inputs) regardless!
Also: chicken bouillon is a GAME CHANGER.

Your videos have made me feel so much better about my upcoming colonoscopy this year! My doc has prescribed what seems like a mild prep to me. A few Dulcolax the night before my prep, 10 caps of Miralax for the prep, and nothing by mouth after midnight (my procedure is at 7am, so that's not too awful). I'm 46 and my gran had colon cancer, so I decided to be proactive and get this done asap. My biggest concern about the prep is nausea, but I have some promethazine for that. I should be okay! I play clarinet, flute, and bass guitar, so it was nice to see this from a fellow music nerd!

Thank you for sharing ❤. I watched your videos in preparation for my first colonoscopy earlier this year at the age of 42. I had suspected IBS-C symptoms for over 15 years and a whole list of food intolerances. You helped me put a plan together for the liquid portion of the prep. And I agree, bouillon is so good. I hate sweet stuff. Thanks so much for the great information and I’m glad you are doing better. Take care!

Hi Jen! I'm so glad to hear that you found my videos helpful! It's so important to go into prep day with a plan so you're not caught off guard. And IBS-C is no joke - I hope you're feeling better!

Thank you for being so open (and fun) regarding this subject. I'm 23 and have my 6th one on Monday. I find the cooling tip for that ugly preparation so helpful!
By the way, I highly, extremely recommend you to go and see a gut microbiota specialist, bonus if it's also a nutritionist, but it'd do wonders with your condition and managing that would help a freaking lot with your symptoms remission and overall quality of life. Greetings from Colombia!

I hope the colonoscopy went well!! I do have a nutritionist who has helped me tremendously to identify missing nutrients and how to incorporate foods that previously caused me gastrointestinal distress. I hope you are doing better!

Thank you so much for posting these videos. You're helping people more than you know. Helps calm me down. Normalizes this. Especially for younger people (my insurance didn't even want to cover this because I'm not 45 yet!). I have to prep...for two days. Getting my first Colonoscopy this week. I play piano and ukulele so I have another reason to subscribe 😆 #musiclover

Just found you on RUclips, thank you for sharing! I just got diagnosed with what I was told is a type of colitis (not ulcerative but in the family of colitis). I am going through the initial shame of trying to explain without giving to much info. Thank you so much!!!!❤
P.s. Can you make a video soon if what foods you can and cannot eat with this disease?

Thanks for sharing a bit of your journey! I was diagnosed with microscopic colitis initially, then another type I can’t remember the name of (#brainfog), before ultimately settling in the UC camp, so I totally get it! And I’ll definitely add that video suggestion to my list - thanks for the idea!

Hi Alicia, thanks for the video - it’s very informative! Appreciate you discussing everything in a straightforward way. I’m also ‘gifted’ with the opportunity to have multiple colonoscopies…. I’m not sure if works for others but for me; if I tend to go easy on fiber in my diet for a couple days before starting the prep then the prep seems to go better with a better clean out. Again, not sure if that’s just my strange body response or if it would work for others too, just passing it along.
It’s interesting to find your channel. I have the colonoscopy issues but I’m also a fairly new adult violin learner with a 5 string violin because I couldn’t decide between violin or viola. So I’m short, I enjoy all your videos regardless of the subject matter! 🎻🎶🎶
Take care, look forward to your next video…..

Chilling makes sense when you think about why certain beer companies instruct you to drink their swill as cold as possible: because then you can't taste how bad it is because you've substantially decreased the volatility of the liquid. As a result, fewer of the molecules reach your nose and you taste less. 🌈🌟

I'm 65 and have diverticular disease - just recovering from a flare-up. I have never had a colonoscopy. I was offered one three years ago, but I declined and so my condition was successfully diagnosed with a contrast CT. I know that colonoscopies are routine in the US, but not in the UK and I find the whole idea rather repugnant and probably harmful. Of course, if you have an immune disease then there are probably good reasons in your case and, if there was absolutely no alternative, I would grit my teeth and go through with it. Otherwise, no thanks.

    • @ChronicallyMusical

Sadly I have to get them frequently as a CT scan cannot show the severity of my disease as well as a colonoscopy. As far as I know, there isn't any damage from getting them! They are also very important for colon cancer screening.

@@ChronicallyMusical Thanks for your reply. I live in the UK, where they are not used for routine screening. I was offered one when I lived in Sweden and was suffering from what was then undiagnosed diverticular disease.

Hello. So I have to have another colonoscopy. On to my4 th GI Dr in 12 years. Suprep was disgusting made me so I’ll during the process. Felt like childbirth without anesthesia. Plenvue tasted 75% better but still hurt me a lot. My new Dr said I can’t get plenvue. I think I’m being perscribed Golitly? New doc said Miralax is not approved? Do they mean big pharma doesn’t get paid for that but it works? I’m thinking of just doing Miralax and ducalax and Gatorade. Is this a diy people do and not tell Dr??
And can you list 1,2,3 how to best do it. I think you said taking 100% at once worked best. Let’s pretend my appt is at 8:00 am. Thanks

My doctor actually "prescribes" the miralax + dulcolax method! So that's what I do, I've had other docs who require prescription prep so I've done that too. I try to just do what my doctor tells me because I don't want to go through all the prep only to find out they can't do the procedure. That said, I've found the miralax + dulcolax works great. Last time I did the split prep, and I usually start with the dulcolax tables and then drink half the prep around 4pm the day before. Then I finish the second half of the prep a few hours before my appointment time.

Gastroenterologists all have their own preferred prep regimen, so when your doc says “Miralax isn’t approved,” it means that isn’t prep regimen. Miralax is OTC (at least in the US), so insurance companies actually prefer it (because they don’t have to shell out a nickel for it-it’s on you). The doc gets the final say, but you’re going to get whatever your insurer’s pharmacy benefit manager has a deal for, because this stuff is all generic.
A little chemistry: Miralax, Suprep, etc. are all really the same active ingredient (AI). They are polyethylene glycol (PEG-yeah, basically polymerized antifreeze). The average molecular weight varies from product to product, as do the electrolyte and flavor additives. (Electrolytes and flavor additives are not active ingredients-the PEG is the thing.) Miralax is PEG-3350, meaning the average molecular weight is 3350 g/mol. PEG is an osmotic laxative: it basically creates diarrhea by inhibiting the colon’s water resorption function function. My best guess is that your GI prefers a prep with a higher molecular weight than Miralax for some reason. (I really need to ask a gastroenterologist some time why prep regimens vary so widely, but I don’t encounter them in my work life. I work in clinical trials but for now I’m working with neurologists on trials for autoimmune neuro diseases like MS and MG.)
Fun fact: osmotic laxatives are contraindicated for people with IBD, but motility laxatives like phenophthalein aren’t going to clean you out, either. The alternative would be a high colonic enema, and I expect that’s probably worse for someone with IBD.

Yes, that’s normal! Any kind of colonoscopy prep is forcing your body to do things it doesn’t normally do, cramping, bloating, and general abdominal discomfort is to be expected and should subside once you finish the prep.
