We have 48"x12" footings here in MA.. some bigger decks have 10+ footings which equates to about 4000 pounds of concrete pulling the deck down along with gravity.. I don't know how they even last but in my lifetime I definitely would like to see the approach to footings change.

What if you separate the bolts from the footing and add a spacer or longer brackets? Might be easier than digging out the footings. Granted this could be temporary of the footing continue to sink.

Exactly... This is a lot of work to do it the hardest way possible.

You can definitely add spacers to fix a problem like this. I made this video specifically for those whose footings have sunk below the soil level, making it difficult to keep water away from the wood posts supporting them.

@@athhud Keep in mind that these are only suggestions for repairs. I remember someone telling me one time that they had to remove concrete footings like these that sunk into the ground over time and replace them with new ones. Maybe this would've worked for someone like them.

@@vrt1032 how? my cinder blocks footings have tilted on one side of the deck (just three of the seven or so blocks). How can I tilt them back up and try to ensure they don't fall again?

Hello, I just looked at a pair of staircases at the back of a home and they look like the have sunk on one side, the stairs and landings need to be torn down anyway so I would be starting fresh. Surely I shouldn't use the existing footings?

I wouldn't be able to evaluate the use of the old footing and if it's damaged or creates problems, then absolutely.

We have the opposite problem. Our deck is attached to our home and it’s rising in one corner. I am debating digging a trench and trying to lower it. Wish me luck

I have a deck that is 28 foot long and 12 deep with a roof tied into my home. I am in the process of replacing all the deck boards and the deck has sank on the front mainly half the length but needs to be leveled the whole 28 foot across. Should I start from the lowest section first or from the lowest end? Thanks

It's difficult for me to understand what you are doing, but I would recommend starting at the point that would make the process the easiest. Feel free to email me some pictures of your project and I'll see if I can provide you with some more information. You can get our email address at our website.
