I live in northern Japan (20 years) but I gotta say that those ‘slums’ are a paradise compared to the ones I saw in India, Thailand or Indonesia…or even in USA/Canada! The slums in my native Montreal or Toronto are way scarier! …I’ve known some people who’ve ‘disappeared’ on the count of Russian Roulette or other maliciousness… 😢
As a Japanese, I think it's a very realistic and fun video. Nishinari is the largest slum in western Japan, and many Japanese do not bother to visit. But it's not because it's dangerous, it's just not necessary. It's not even a hidden town. It is difficult to narrow the gap between rich and poor, but improvement is progressing.
We live in Scotland. From what I've watched it's not a bad area, there are far worse in Scotland. I grew up in one of the areas as a teenage kid. High crime, drugs and attacks on other people. Saying that people in these poorer areas tend to be better towards others than many of the rich I have worked with. The more money they have the more it is about them rather then their neighbours. Japan has always been a country on my list to visit. I would prefer areas similar to how I grew up, put money into those areas rather than the usual tourist nonsense
I'm glad that you say the gap is improving/progressing. In the US the gap between rich and poor is growing ever wider, with a tiny percent of the population holding wealth and the MAJORITY of Americans either completely living in poverty or else living in fear of falling down. Our middle class has shrunk to the point where it basically doesn't exist anymore. Especially when it comes to young people - they can't pay they're college debts because good paying jobs are gone, we have a service or gig economy with people earning minimum wage, which isn't a living wage. Young people can't afford to buy houses and many do not even have kids because they can't afford to. And the elite class of government officials only pursue policy that benefits wealthy corporate campaign donors, not the public good, not the needs of the people. There are sociological studies conducted by universities like Stanford showing that this is true -- that political policy reflects the wishes of corporate elites, not the will of the people. And both political parties are complicit, neither on is better than the other.
Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We do not differentiate between any of them. And to Him, we surrender.” (2:136 / Translated by Community)
Well Poland is kind of similar, used to look alot like Nishinari, though we never had issues with too much crime. Now its much more modern but you still find places that are just run down.
I have not been to Japan and would love to travel there one day. All I ever see is the people being so kind and welcoming. You going to the biggest slum of Japan and still being greeted with such kindness just shows that Japan as a whole is full of great people. Im sure there are bad people and places as there always is but this video just shows that Japan is on a different level compared to other parts of the world when it comes to respect and kindness.

if you need filtered you shouldn't be working anywhere that deals with vulnerable populations. Also you're living a life that's missing out on authenticity.

I lived in this area near Hanazonocho Station for 1.5 years while studying in Osaka. while i heard people shouting and agruing outside almost daily, i never felt unsafe walking around there. people there are super nice, especially if you speak a bit japanese they're really warm and welcoming. they dont judge you as well. be kind and they be even kinder to you
I stayed in that area when the pandemic started as I was unable to fly for 4 months. It was a great experience. People were nice, down to earth & friendly. Many were just sitting down reading books. I also saw many drinking in groups without annoying anyone. It was a very economical & convenient area to stay in. I felt relatively safe.
Hi. I have visited Osaka 3 times already and I always stayed close to Shin-Imamyia station. Never had any issues with hotels and never felt scared (or even feared) or sensed any lack of safety in the area. It is close to Abeno Harukas, has lots of train and subway options and it's barely 45 minutes away from KIX. Yes, I have seen homeless people (and in other cities in Japan) but they never posed a threat. I believe that foreign are just seeing these advantages and don't really care about the neighborhood's fame from (a distant it seems) the past.
As a Clevelander, I kind of figured that compared to our hometowns it was going to seem pretty tame. The gentleman from Nagasaki was very interesting - if you can find him again that would make for a good interview. And your tour guide needs his own channel, he seems very cool. Nice of him to take you around :) Another gem, keep it up!
I agree with you on the gentlement from Nagasaki. I'd like to know more about generational trauma from the atomic bombs, very interesting, but also very very heartbreaking and disturbing.

This was a fun video. It seemed much better than what I would have imagined. It had me anxious that you said it was a Yakuza slum though, I hope you take care not to get too involved in showing us
I think she should dive a little deeper. She’s pasty white, with a camera. For all they know, she’s live streaming 🤷♂️ I think that pretty much everyone will show respect. She almost dove right in✌️❤️
@@LondonWater I've been there and walked around and talked to the locals also. Honestly, I always felt safe and everyone was really friendly. Granted, I'm a big white guy. But, genuinely I felt so much safer there than even in some parts of my home country (Australia).
Most tourists (even locals) didn't know about the history of Nishinari (Kamagasaki). Majority of the area are already gentrified (new Hoshino resort was recently built in the area). Thanks for making this video, I lived in Nishinari and it's not as dangerous as it used to be. Honestly, its history is so rich especially during the early labor social movements in Japan that it's a shame to totally wipe it out of people's collective memories. The homeless people there also don't really bother other people. It's also a crime to beg on the streets so even though they are homeless, many of them still make a decent way of living (collecting cans and bottles, construction, etc.). And Nishinari-ku is quite big. The area where most homeless are found are near Shin-imamiya/Dobutsuen-mae/Tobita area. But the other areas are not bad. Cheap houses and convenient location (most areas are connected to a train station or bus).

For a slum area it still looks pretty good. Sweden has some slum areas, but they are filled with crime and drugs (it's also a no go zone), so I usually do not recommend tourists to go there for their own safety. But I'm surprised they are so friendly in Japan in the slums.
If I literally ever get stopped by a yakuza in Japan I wouldn't be as much as scared as being stopped by any random bimbo in Brazil, that's how safe it is, for me it is almost laughable and really heartwarming to witness how safe Japan is.
I was in Osaka just in January and never knew about this place. I found most people extremely courteous and they treat foreigners well. I also noticed that many people were dressed in pretty worn and old clothes. Only in the shopping areas were people dressed up. Japan is truly somewhere to visit. Thanks for showing this side of Japan and kudos to you for learning the language!💯💪🙏
God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Thank you so much for bringing a camera to this area to give them your platform. Your friend you made and the people you greeted all seemed so friendly and courteous. I really hope that this will help them get the proper assistance so they can all have basic needs met. I really hope they are not all homeless. They're all such nice people.
You transitioned so well from your 'hidden camera' style language video to this travel genre. Way better than some others that I've seen who have been doing it for years. Looking forward to seeing more! 😃
Hey! I definitely scoured for your channel.. I'm the girl in the plaid flannel! I had actually never known about this place until you talked to us and I'm definitely glad you did! On the way to the station we saw some really cool wall murals. We were on the way to our next train so we barely even stopped to look around us, but if we did I'm sure we would have noticed something! Thank you for teaching us about it!🥰
Your videos are amazing. I really like the raw feeling when you show a place. Not all of the places are perfect. Real people living in real places. Very cool. Thank you.
We stayed at an Airbnb place in Nishinari back in 2019. We didn't know about it's reputation. We just found out when we walked the streets and saw a lot of homeless people. They were very friendly. No sign of danger even when we walked at night. It's a peaceful community based on my experience.
I love these new traveling journalist style videos. I would like to see more in various topics such as doing groceries, commuting, basic everyday tasks that are unique to Japan or very different in Japan. Maybe some interviews? Keep up the great work Anming!
That's so sweet that your hubby was worried about your safety ❤ Detroit is deffinatly way worse but, Wow all that trash just piled up and left there by the Welfare office😢 Looks like madness. Loved seeing you with a friend who showed you around. I think most homeless people from my own personal experience of being homeless in the States for a few years (always sleeping outside, never in a shelter) are some of the most giving and generous ppl. They would go without something just to help your situation. Much love to the homeless community of Japan.❤🙏💌
A large news organization just posted their own vide about this, and I can say your video quality brings a much more personal sense of the situation there.
You have such a comforting and kind presence, but somehow manage to be so bold and brave all at the same time. You freaking go, girl! I'm a woman from Chicago and watching this makes me want to get out there and explore, safely. Great content! ❤
I think it's funny, the most dangerous city in France is comparable to the "Average" american city. And the most dangerous city in France, is 5x more dangerous than Paris.
Thank you Anming for another tour to show us another Japanese slum. I’m really glad that the people you met in this area were a lot more nicer compared to that gentleman from the first area & that you made unexpected friends which is really great. Super sweet that your husband was just messaging you for your safety. I am from a ghetto area in Los Angeles so I know I have seen my shares of interesting stories happening in my area though, it has gotten better here & there past couple of years. For sure those areas look really tamed compared to where I live at in the States. Nice touch in letting foreign tourists about this place that they mostly have no idea about
Compared to the United States, this place is a hundred times safer and cleaner. Whole neighborhoods are senselessly devastated or burned down, or there are wild shootings. The slums in Japan cannot be compared to those in the USA. Western views of a 3,000-year-old culture are always fallacious. The west and its culture left a very negative influence on the culture there. Many Western tourists often have no idea about the culture there in Japan and behave like it, too often hurting the feelings of the Japanese. We in the West should therefore be very cautious and very careful with any judgements.
It is said to be dangerous in Japan just because it is a homeless city, but in reality, Kobe and other cities with yakuza offices are far more dangerous
@@neymar2953 Define "dangerous." It's still relatively safe compared to the US. Are you likely to get robbed, mugged or shot there? I don't see Osaka on the list of worlds most dangerous cities. I do see St. Louis, Detroit, and New Orleans. Of course even that is an incomplete picture. I haven't been to Tokyo in a while, but I assume I'm less likely to get robbed there than I am in San Francisco.
I live inside this Nishinari district and I can feel that the safety is definitely better than 20 years ago. I can assert that this district is even safer than most of the cities in India as I visited there last year. The Osaka government really made effort to improve the safety of the Airin area (the most dangerous area) which resulted in the increase of accommodations for foreign tourists.
Try to walk around in one of the slums in the USA and you will see the level of real dangerous situations you can get into in the slums of the USA. I was mugged and robbed in Chicago when I was a college student there.
I'm a very old cultural anthropologist who was raised in Detroit. I stumbled across your videos quite by accident. I'm always looking for interesting insights into other cultures. May I say that your work is quite good, especially with your interactions with others. I really wish other young people such as yourself took an interest in other cultures. Keep up the good work and I will look into other videos that you make. Cheers.
You're developing into a documentarian, with history involved, which I think is very interesting in itself and intriguing in what you show us. Japan at another level of observation. Do keep this up. Robert, UK.
Wow I remember living across the road from Nishinari and I never noticed it was a slum. I'm so used to seeing tents and piles of garbage in San Francisco that I thought nothing of it... On the bright side, at least Nishinari doesn't smell like weed everywhere?
The Nishinari Airin area has become much safer than it used to be. This is because Osaka has made every effort to improve public safety in this area. Even now, there are a lot of strange people in the Airin area, but they rarely cause problems or get involved in incidents. Even now, some people in Japan have the impression that the Airin district is unsafe, but now many Japanese youtubers gather and introduce the townscape of the district and it is a sacred place to visit popular shops.
It's pretty wild how some people just have no idea about how potentially dangerous this place could be, if you're not really street savvy. Being a New Yorker, this doesn't look nearly as bad as to what it COULD really be, but I think the appeal of the affordability and easy access to tourist attractions is what's bringing foreigners to the area. I hope Japan will see this as an opportunity to assist these people instead of ignoring them.
@@AntonGully - She said "Yakuza" meaning it's controlled by one of the many factions of gokudō. If that is the case, it means they control what goes on there more than law enforcement does. They are a lot smaller than they used to be, but it doesn't mean they don't have their influence. These days they are heavily involved in the porn industry. I don't know of any suburb in the United States they have left off the maps which is a huge clue it's probably a place you don't want to be in after the sun sets.
It's great to see someone showing real people who struggle in Japan. It seems that asia in general makes little provision for the elderly, retired people. I suspect that it's expected that their children will provide but often that's not an option. Although I'm enjoying the content don't put yourself in danger for us.
It's actually common that once you "retire" from your career that you take up "silver" jobs, which could be as simple as sweeping parks or working as a crossing guard to taking up simple office jobs. This is a worrying trend for many because "careers" promised to set you up for a good retirement.
Thank you for watching. I’m glad that you appreciate this more real version of Japan. Don’t worry, I never felt like I was in danger during the filming of these videos.
@@SherrifOfNottingham Thank you for that information. My cousin worked for a stock market investment company some years ago in the UK. He went to Japan to work for about 7 years. His job was to bring computers into the Japanese stock market but ultimately he was cutting staff. He said redundancy was an unknown concept to most and they looked on being 'let go' was their failure. It was very sad.
@@OrientalPearl Thank you for replying. Your 'new style' videos are so informative. My cousin worked in Tokyo for some years. He said that the formalities and different expectations between the men and women were really hard to adapt to. He learnt some Japanese, before he went, from a Japanese woman, so when he arrived his coworkers thought he was effeminate. He quickly adjusted because that misconception cost him business at first. He found the treatment of women harsh at times and never felt entirely comfortable with his female staff.
The man wearing the NYC jacket whose first instinct upon seeing you was asking to be friends and offering to show you around the area deserves to be protected at all costs!
This video is incredible ! I loved to see this side of Japan. Also, despite it's history, the kindness and openness of so many residents is an incredible reminder that everyone is just trying to get by one way or another.
Anming makes another journey into the unseen world of Japan's homeless, but this time in Osaka. As usual your attitude and style combined with your proficiency in Japanese, cause people to willing interact with you. Thus you are able to gain access to a world that most people simply don't notice. As you indicated it is not really hidden, but the average tourist would walk past it not realizing what they are actually seeing. I only spent a couple days in Osaka and I may have been one of oblivious tourists who didn't comprehend, what they were really seeing. Quite bluntly hidden in plain sight. Your ability to interpret what you are viewing and learning about an issue that most cities and governments never really want to confront, and definitely don't advertise. Thanks for this peak behind the curtain of another aspect of life in Japan.
Thank you so much Jim. I spent half a day here after a big filming trip to Shikoku. I’m glad I stopped by because I really learned a lot. Like you I’ve been to Osaka before and never heard of this place. It was eye-opening for sure.
as someone from a 3rd world country, i didn't feel scared or something when i stayed in that area for a couple of days even if i was walking late at night/midnight. the low cost accomodations and food are 👍
personal opinion, people will think Nishinarin area is a biggist slum in Osaka, so it should look poor and dirty. Actually it's stereo-typed impression. local people are friendly and nice😊
I think these kinds of places with bad reputations are interesting. I lived many years in the heart of what is considered basically the ghetto or the wrong side of the tracks. Lots of gangs, and crime. I've heard so many bombs go off that I don't even react to one anymore. I was never scared. The same with my brother who lives in a house that was bombed, raided and shot at. Being afraid is a valid emotion, but it's also pointless. Nishinari is propably safer than most places around the world. You still need to be weary of your surroundings, especially at night. But that goes to every place. Just be observant of your surroundings and be smart and you'll be safe, regardless if it's downtown Detroit or Nishinari or the suburbs of Stockholm. These documentary style videos really show the real side of Japan and are important. Stay safe and give Tommy a hug, poor guy has been worried sick.
On my last visit to Osaka last year, a Japanese friend was in charge of hotel reservation and it was a couple of minutes from Nishinari. He scheduled that hotel because it was a nice hotel and also very cheap. Contrary to your video, we saw many deluxe vehicles around the poorest neighborhoods -obviously yakuza cars-. But I heard from many Japanese, including my friend, that the area was very dangerous up to the 90’s but not anymore.
It was a scary impression even for me as a Japanese person, but unlike what I expected to see when I saw it this way, they all live well together and are friendly to visitors from other places 😮 Thank you very much for the very helpful video 🙏👍
When we visited Osaka 3 years ago, the hotel where we stayed at was located just across the Shin-imamiya station, although there were a lot of homeless on the streets, me and my Wife did not feel that its dangerous even when walking at night, probably because they mind their own business and does not bother tourists.
We tend to brand them as life failures, but when I look at them they seem to be enjoying life. I realized that the definition of happiness is not having a lot of money or a house.
Material items aren’t that important I have a house and have felt unhappy as other family members have three or four houses and earn lots more then me but understanding that there is more to life then assets has made me feel much better and I’m more happy then them I reckon
I have never seen anything like this when visiting Japan. My son lives in Osaka and told me of the homeless. As a tourist, didn’t believe him. Eye opening. It makes one realize all countries have this issue. I’ll share these videos with my 92 yr old mom, who originally immigrated from Tokyo I 1952. We talked of your first video. She was in disbelief. The people you encountered were so friendly! Glad you were safe!
What are you talking about? the japanese people aren't psychopats than make heinous crimes without remorse, no, the Japanese are much better off than the average Westerner.
I used to walk through Nishinari in Osaka in 1990's, from Tennoji to Nanba it was a seedy side but also it was a time capsule of old Japan from the 1950's. There were pawn shops galore to old antiques shops I even saw a place were old men mainly drinking cup of sake playing Shoji (chess) and mahjong parlors to Pachinko gaming shops. There were a few strip clubs and porn theaters. Yes the area was seedy and there were a lot of Yakuza around but never did I feel I was in danger mainly because I was friendly and respectful. Since this was a walk from my home to my English teaching job people got used to me walking by. I did see alot of homelessness and other really lost souls. However most of the shotengai shopping street with this seedy side were being closed and the areas was being demolished and replaced with new building and shopping areas. The area was shrinking and these left over post war men mostly were getting pushed into smaller and smaller areas as the area developed. Last time I was around the area many of the old areas were gone in 2006. I consider myself fortunate to have visited before the redevelopment and got a peak of like in post war Japanese culture before the area was redeveloped.
Nishinari is south of Tennoji (south of the loop line) so I'm not sure if you can walk through it when going from Tennoji to Nanba? Are you thinking of Shinsekai maybe?
@@SachaGreif Yes technically, I started my walk from the Abeno Station and started walking north and before tennoji I would turn west ward and follow this old Shotengai that was an old kind of dying section full of pawn shops and storage... that Shotengai would snake and travel all around south of the loop line which would lead to a poor area with homeless and industrial area this is around Shin-Imamiya Station or south of Dobutsuen-mae Station and then I would travel on this market area that would lead to eventually Tsutenkaku or Osaka tower I would call it... This areas were mostly demolished when I was last there in 2006. That area was in 1992-93 years I was living there
I studied at Osaka University in 2018 and one of the classes was about issues in society so we went to nishinari and visited a Japanese woman who ran a motel there. She also offered different classes for the locals (to make things or write poetry) and they just paid what they could afford. So what I took away from that class was that there are a lot of hotels there because they want to change the area from slum. I had no idea that office had closed, we visited there as well 😔
I live in Miami...There are areas in my city where I would not wander into alone, but I think I would visit this area of Osaka in my next trip there, looks safer than my gated community.
As an Indigenous Native of course I can relate, Anming people are drawn to your positivity and non-judgmental aura. I’m praying 🙏🏽 for your new family. May you and your husband be abundantly blessed and enjoy your journey in life together. I was 😢touched by your determination to show us every side of JAPAN and I enjoy every post. Your absolutely a breath of fresh air and it’s Great 😊. Keep showing us new experiences and new places. Thanks for sharing this.
My wife is Japanese- we were laughing at how safe it looked compared to our home in Los Angeles. Maybe we will take a detour there on our next Japan trip to gauge the sketch factor.
As a Texan I cannot comprehend why anybody would want to live in LA.... I have my own land and can do my own hunting if needed to. I do not depend on trucks for anything if they stop one day.
Such a great video. It's good to see a less than touristy side of Japan. The people seemed normal. Bad reputation of an area that was no more. Thank you.
I am Japanese. I watched your video, and although people living in slums in Japan are poor, I would say that the security is much better than in other countries. It doesn't sound that bad to live there.
I came here today after seeing your newest video that you just posted today as I had not seen this one yet. I am not sure what shocked me more .... the way people live there or the fact that you are shorter than 1,5 meters 0:40. I would have estimated you to be between 1,65 to 1,70 mtrs. This shows how you are coming out big 😉with your videos 😂😂...keep em coming.
Wow, I use to pass by this area many years ago. I lived in the outskirts. Sorry to see and hear this unfortunate news. I hope things get better over there.
It's awsome that you let us take a look at not so nice and touristy places in Japan. Being the biggest slum in Japan, I expected it to look much worse Great to see that not only were able to walk alone through Nishinari, but also nbe friendly welcomed by some of the of the people who actually live there.
Thank you for another excellent video. I recently viewed a youtube video concerning Japan’s ‘evaporated’ people. This area you feature is where many disappear to. Cost of living is the attraction. I think with more tourists visiting that area prices will rise and it will become gentrified leading to economic/social difficulties for those living there.
I am a Japanese woman. Thank you for introducing Japan to me! I don't go to Nishinari because I live in eastern Japan, but if I had to, I would walk around this city at night without fear at all. In the past, there were dangerous areas not only in Nishinari but also in Tokyo and Yokohama. Nowadays, there is almost no danger anywhere in Japan. However, exceptions can occur anywhere. Even if it is a quiet residential area. Please be careful when you travel.

Oriental Pearl, if you say slums, western people image the area where extremely poor families are living. But Sanya(山谷) or Nishinari(西成) is called Doyagai(ドヤ街). Doya(ドヤ) is the same meaning of Yado(ヤド,宿). Doya usually means cheap and shabby lodgings. After the war time, a lot of construction workers or plumbers were gathered from countryside into big cities like Tokyo and Osaka. Sanya and Nishinari provided many cheap lodgings to temporary migrant workers. After rapid economic development was over, many day workers returned home or somewhere. Nonetheless some of them remained there with unstable job opportunity and made poor communities for the reason they have no place to return or some. Moreover, you have to note that a lot of indigenous people are living there across several generations. They are doing businesses for generations and not poor at all.
Thank you for exploring the streets of Nishinari. Its one of the most dangerous places in Japan, definitely not a night city to go alone but during the day its not that bad you will see friendly faces almost everywhere. 5:58 That park (Haginochayaminami or Triangle Park) is one of the greater areas in Nishinari, that guy was definitely a good person bringing you there to meet new people. it's pretty close to where I worked in Abeno and honestly it never gave me bad vibes in general. Glad you could spread information about Japans ups and downs :)
Thank you so much for watching. It’s awesome to hear from you since you’re familiar with the area. I didn’t stay until nighttime. I wonder what it’s like then.
@@OrientalPearl Sometimes that park will hold events like local concerts during festivals and it's awesome around then, but any other night it's empty with a few homeless people sleeping in the open sober or drunk. During covid a lot of tents ended up being pitched inside the park so it's nice to see it looking better already that's for sure. It's also one of the safest spots in Nishinari ward since police officers patrol around that park quite often making it a haven for the community, anywhere else and its definitely not safe from what I was told from locals. Overall though I spent most of my time there during daylight hours and have found the nicest people who want to drink and chat with just about anyone.
I'm staying here in Nishinari for a long period and I'm going out at any time of the night. At first I was wary because of the reputation but now I just don't understand. I never saw anything fishy and I would go at 2am to the konbini without a second thought. I see young women and families walking around after dark as well. I'm staying there because it's cheaper since no japanese want to be here, I guess most tourist does as well because it's more likely way safer than where we came from. I mean, who is scared of homeless people?
Is that a second triangle park? I've been to Osaka and walked through Nishinari, but when someone says Triangle park I think of the one just north of Dotonbori where the small statue of liberty is. Perhaps there are multiple Triangle parks!
@@nameisthename25 Homeless people are much more dangerous elsewhere, but I agree, I have stayed there and always felt safe even walking around at night. I stayed at Hotel Toyo, and who can complain about a private room with aircon for less than $20 a night? I suppose that's a "fancy" hostel by Shin-Imamiya standards though hahaha. I loved it. If you're staying there, I hope you check out Travellers bar/Osaka tacos and Bar groovy. Say hi to Shota and Wataru respectively for me ;)
My goodness, it had never occurred to me that this kind of place existed in Japan-tents on the streets with piles of garbage around, and I certainly missed it when I was there. But I am glad people are nice and they don't look like they are on drug seen in some advanced countries. Since you mentioned China, I can easily say that of all the places I visited there I had never seen someone sleeping on the street or streets littered with garbage. You can verify this, Anming, since you have lived in China for many years.
Two things Some of the garbage was put in front of the welfare office in protest. It appears to be mostly non food waste, so it won't be a health hazard, just a visual hazard. You have to pay to dispose of some things in Japan, such as fridges. If you are poor you're not paying to do that. So they end up on the street. The govt could clean up the trash on the street but I think they see it as punishing the day laborers which society already exploited.
If you've only been to the big cities you won't see homeless people in China. They are forcibly moved out of the big cities. I've only seen them in the countryside and in Harbin.
@@OrientalPearl This is interesting and thank you for letting me know. There is no question that China has many poor people, just like in most countries, except I don't know if they live like in 'tent cities' in the U.S. I do recall seeing poor people in China but they were not sleeping on the streets with cardboard boxes or in a tent.
i'm japanese in the past, there were many homeless people in nishinari. but now there are various forms of support available, and anyone who seeks it can escape from that way of life. most of them often choose to live that way themselves
@@rayoscrostThey already don't have families, jobs, friends in the you say normal world. So I guess its more comfortable with loads of people like themselves around.
It is the dirtiest and most homeless city in Japan. That is a fact. It is also said to be unsafe and dangerous. But that is not true. Even if a woman walks alone at night, she is unlikely to be in danger. The only thing you will see is an occasional fight between drunken old men. Young people have recently begun to visit the area, as it is known for its low accommodation costs and many extremely cheap and delicious restaurants, in spite of its easy access to tourist attractions.
Hi Anming, I was in awe this was happening in Japan! But I guess this is prevalent all over the world. I'm not sure you might have given this some thought, but what about investigative reporting on cultural issues? What do Japanese people think about world issues? Your reporting about the homeless was GREAT!
There have been places like this in Japan for hundreds of years. I’m not big on doing street interviews, but I got a little taste of it in this video. It wasn’t as hard as I thought.
I think you discovered a great niche to cover. Japan isn't always the land of milk and honey, just like everywhere else. Kind of like "Bald & Bankrupt", going where few others tread. Cool! Do more in more areas!
Thank you for your sharing. There is no way this is called old slum in my country, in fact it is even better than my current place, in terms of environment and atmostphere. People in my place are so aggresive and so rude not like this, mainly because of finance and poor education..
There’s something about watching your cutsie “I speak Japanese” videos Vs. a nice video like this.. Where you interact with the struggling people. Poor people are where it’s at! In any city! TY for the video! I love it!
We have Honda ,zusuki , Yamaha , Toyota all product inforted from Japan and we put it inside luxurious rooms .. Where is the profit money of those big company ?

This cheap hotel is there makes sence but is there hotel like this on the Saitama ken area side for example ?
Either that bridge marking is wrong or you are a lot smaller than I thought 😅
Did you just go there alone? Please, you should have someone accompany you next time.

Absolutely kind, genuine and helpful people. Never judge people by their financial situation or looks.
I agree.
The only scenario I'd say it is dangerous in is if you're alone and a woman at night.

Give me your unfiltered.
Many were just sitting down reading
books.
Thank you Violet. I’d like to go back there and see it again. I was only there for half a day.
I agree with you on the gentlement from Nagasaki. I'd like to know more about generational trauma from the atomic bombs, very interesting, but also very very heartbreaking and disturbing.
And to Him, we surrender.”

ohio: literally worse than the atomic bomb
This was a fun video. It seemed much better than what I would have imagined. It had me anxious that you said it was a Yakuza slum though, I hope you take care not to get too involved in showing us
I’m glad that the slum was better than you expect lol. I made a quick stop in Osaka on the way back from filming in Shikoku.

Wow, I'd like to learn more about Nishinari's history concerning early labor and social movements in Japan.

For a slum area it still looks pretty good. Sweden has some slum areas, but they are filled with crime and drugs (it's also a no go zone), so I usually do not recommend tourists to go there for their own safety.
But I'm surprised they are so friendly in Japan in the slums.
Thanks for bringing us and showing us this place. They have such great hospitality.
Thank you for watching Kendrick. I always appreciate your comments.
Pff… Japans worst slum is like a middle class neighborhood in Brazil. Thats like heaven compared to the worst slum here.
If I literally ever get stopped by a yakuza in Japan I wouldn't be as much as scared as being stopped by any random bimbo in Brazil, that's how safe it is, for me it is almost laughable and really heartwarming to witness how safe Japan is.
Yeah, this is 10x nicer than the _nicest_ part of Benton Harbor
I mean, I'm not surprised. Brazil is a latin-American country.
@outorgado7879 Okay but bimbos aren't scary or powerful anywhere lmao. Getting a little ahead of yourself there.
Brazil?? California alone has at least 20 places like this.

The most dangerous place in Japan is comparable to our safest place in our country 😂😂😂
Certainly safer than Hollywood or San Fransicko posh area 😂
Sweet people ❤❤
I think it's funny, the most dangerous city in France is comparable to the "Average" american city.
Nice touch in letting foreign tourists about this place that they mostly have no idea about
Thank you for watching Katrina. And thank you for sharing your story. I liked talking to these guys a lot more than the guy in the last video.
@@neymar2953ヤクザは一般人には手を出さないので安全ですよ。

I agree.
I don't think you can couch homelessness in the veil of cultural sensitivity lol
Wow I remember living across the road from Nishinari and I never noticed it was a slum. I'm so used to seeing tents and piles of garbage in San Francisco that I thought nothing of it... On the bright side, at least Nishinari doesn't smell like weed everywhere?
Japan's "worst" slum is still safer than some of the best areas in the west.
Good video, Pearl.
I'm glad that you enjoyed the video!
Looks cleaner than a lot of places still too 😅
The Nishinari Airin area has become much safer than it used to be.
Very interesting, definitely safer looking than many place here stateside.
Thank you for sharing so much of the culture and surroundings. Stay safe out there!
I was already creeped out by her last slum dive. She's going to end up locked in some basement somewhere if she isn't' careful.
@@exit1368 Who are you asking?
In NYC and Detroit, they don't enforce the law, in Japan, they really do enforce the law.
The crime rate in this "slum" is probably lower than 99% of American suburbs. Really didn't like the pre-judgement that came with this video.

I’m glad that these videos are well received. I think this is a side of Japan more people should know about.
観光地ではないので、行く時にはご注意を。
This is the reason I love living in Japan.
I feel very safe everywhere I go.
Those slums in Japan are nothing compared to places like Tepito in Mexico City.
I had no idea that office had closed, we visited there as well 😔
Awesome video!
A real eye opener much appreciated.

I live in Miami...There are areas in my city where I would not wander into alone, but I think I would visit this area of Osaka in my next trip there, looks safer than my gated community.

Thank you for another excellent video. I recently viewed a youtube video concerning Japan’s ‘evaporated’ people. This area you feature is where many disappear to. Cost of living is the attraction.
And to Him, we surrender.”
(2:136 / Translated by Community)

Two things
Some of the garbage was put in front of the welfare office in protest.
