  • Kat Ourlian of Upscale Audio had a supportive upbringing by her parents, which gave her the confidence to go into the music industry, first as a recording engineer and now in the audio industry.
Along the way, she's developed some strategies for how to deal with people who treat her differently because she's not a man. "I call it gaining trust. People don't trust me right off the bat, which is a little bizarre... just because I'm a woman. And then being young..." We spoke with Kat at AXPONA 2023.

As an audiophile for 40 years I'd love to see more women interested in listening, retail, and the production side of this industry. But pandering is not the way.

I purchased from her and corresponded with her about my stupid questions at Upscale and I would not have imagined she was this young, this irresistible, this funny, etc. What a cool lady. She was awesome by the way to work with, but again, who would have thought :) I don't even know how to praise someone properly in the me-too era, everything I meant was a compliment. Nothing like "for a women, she was very knowledgeable"
Men in this field are often arrogant and condescending.

It's going to have to be the "Approach" Okay, play a bunch of equipment in her price range, and see which one sounds best to HER! Does it make her feel like dancing, singing to favorite LP's? Etc.... Treat us equally, and don't be intimidating, because the industry has a shadowed intimidating factor because or technical offerings that are sometimes hard to setup pieces, or too many buttons... End in End, has to be about the music. She will only bring friends over and say ex. I bought this tube pre-amplifier to go with my turntable and it sounds great to me. I don't care anymore than that. I do not care to swap out equipment, or chase a sound that may not exist... Keep in mind, we have more self care Clothes, makeup, children, etc... Usually HiFi pieces would be WAY down the list of consideration. It will stay mostly women musicians who are really into music will have to do the influencing... Until then, it will be a select few...

The interviewer is pushing an issue, diversity, that the interviewee is not really resonating with. I hear Kat saying, "Yeah, it's an issue. People struggle with it. I might have struggled with it, but at the end of the day, I know my shit and not worried about the dumb asses of the world!"

Kat is awesome. I hope to meet her (phone or whatever) one day. We are on the same page about synergy and all that and she knows her stuff! I hope to talk with her a bit about phono carts, etc. down the road when I'm ready. (Got to save up you know). I want to get her take on it. We need more women like her in the industry and hobby.
The female perspective is very valuable in these sorts of things. In fact, they get it right more often then men do!

Dealt with Kat a couple of times while I was upgrading/refining my vinyl setup. A straight shooter who knows her s**t. I always wondered how she and Kevin got along, because he hates sharing the spotlight. (Did you notice he walked by twice during this interview) When she moved on to Cadence in London, it wasn't a big surprise.

As a recording engineer, that has to employ random assistants and interns, working out of various studios around the world, there's just no time to judge. I throw the flow chart at you, the recall sheets and if you can do it, then you can do it, if you cant then GTFO.
Doesnt matter who, what, when and where, its about business and getting the music happening right.
People are overthinking and need to just stop and remember why theyre both in that room. Done. Nothing more.

I dont care one way or the other people get into a field of work from legacy curiosity money potential inventiveness ect AND i dont know all the newer more current faces behind CH Precision DCS ect but i always wondered why there wasnt more people of color in the industry. White Anglo-Saxon from the European continent to be sure same here in America and of course the Asian representatives from the East but, like i said not including any say 2005 and ^ i cant name any Black or Hispanic owner/engineer/designer-builder of high end audio. Im not saying that makes a difference but i was just curious as to what brings a person to a certain field and if the SJW feel that theres not enough of any said group in a field that perhaps it isnt because they were excluded but that they werent interested in being included

I bet that she is so d@#^ tired of the "what does it feel like to be a woman in this industry" conversation. I don't get why anyone (men) even cares! Talk Audio! She can talk it, so talk it and stop looking at a female, listen to the knowledge. Ok, so there are not a bunch of females in the biz/hobby so what. If they want into the hobby cool, if not cool, its not their thing. Trying to think of what a lot of women are into, for now lets just say sewing I guess they used to be into that, or Arts and Crafts lets say that. There are not a lot of men into Arts and Crafts. Do you think women care? But if a man joined in they would NOT ask him how it feels. I would bet on that too.
