When I saw those fires you filmed I got chills because I lived through the largest fire in CA history last year( now the mendocino fire has eclipsed it). I’m glad you didn’t get trapped in a fire storm. But that campsite with the perfect view of Shasta was incredible. Hopefully you missed the fires in Oregon and had a great meal in Ashland. A very charming college town. Look forward to more of your continuing adventure.

No matter how brief, I always love seeing you setup your camp.
I’d really like to see some more detail on how you select a campsite towards the end of the day, then setting it up (bit of technical craft!) and finally your thoughts as your preparing to go to bed.
I don’t have any ideas re how much storage capacity/battery life you have with your kit but it seems like something you could do as a an additional video to the usual.
Absolutely love your videos and commentary, your an inspiration!

Adam InTheSouthWest - Great idea! Hey Darwin, I’d like to see that too. Maybe give your views of this tent compared to your six moons design tent you had and / or a self standing tent.

Not just a tent view, but a good idea of what you did with your food bag, too. I suppose every locale and campsite is somewhat different when it come to making a decision of what to do to keep food from chipmunks, raccoons, bears, and hungry hikers.

Nice! Been looking forward to an update. Just an idea for your next long hike. Take pictures of your shoes or other equipment each day as you start out and as you finish the day. Then they could be placed in a slide show and we could see how the wear and disintegrate over time. As an Engineer that would be awesome data to help re-design the shoes and or other equipment. Hike on ...

Hard core! I sit here in the comfort of a recliner and cannot fathom hiking 6 miles (12 miles round trip) out of my way. I've bicycle toured and thought my three consecutive 100+ mile days was a big deal, but I now feel quite inferior to your 42+ mile hike. With bicycle touring, there's almost always a convenience store every 30 miles with cold ice and air conditioning. Not to mention restaurants, but if pushing too hard, one eventually even gets tired of eating.

I live in Dunsmuir and get out to the PCT almost every day. I just gotta say, you came through JUST in TIME! I was ferrying NOBO and SOBO folks around the fire closures between Ash Camp and Gumboot a lot. Would have done more, but ended up working "fire duty" at the Carr Fire in Redding. (I set up fuel depots at fire camps every year) Seems like fires are becoming more and more severe these last 5-10 years. Glad you got to see this beautiful region before it was socked in with smoke for a month straight!
I'm a recent follower of yours and an avid hiker/camper with tentative (pun intended) thru-hike aspirations. Thanks so much for all of your posts! Valuable and much appreciated tips and info!
    Keep on trekin'!

Thought you had a Garmin InReach. This fire thing is just another good reason to have that texting option I think, to report stuff like hiker injuries, fires, making connections. 1700 miles, nice. Glad your smiling, I sort of thought this is about the time in the hike that some hikers get a little lower somber quality to them. Good luck. Hope the hikers reason their doing on trail with loose responsibleness about fires. Nobody carries water for putting out fires, so they should not build them unless they are near stream side to adequately extinguish them. They can smolder for days unattended, even travel under ground.

If you finished on August 9 , did the Cougar Creek fire near Lake Chelan that started at the end of July interfere with your hike as it is still burning now. Farley felt good after 24 hrs so he did 36 hrs, and 118 miles and finished in 78 days . He made camp as the lightning struck that caused the fire.

IMHO, the mental toughness and attitude one has to have to accomplish something like this is way more important than ones gear.

Two things I am always stuck on after watching these videos is wanting to eat couscous and then cringing at the cold black coffee... just love a piping hot black coffee in the morning. :) Keep trekking Darwin!

I watched a hiker chug a Starbucks VIa right out of the pack and then wash it down with Gatorade.

Curious to see what you think of Ashland and the "Sky Lakes Wilderness" section. Lived there for 15 years and loved it!

Holly cow! 42 miles. Dude, that’s an epic hike. My short thick legs are jealous. A tip if the cap to you sir.

Thank you so much for your fine PCT 2018 You Tube series! Seems the smoke defeats a lot of thru hikers. I'm inspired to maybe try some more section hiking, looking at all of the high quality HD videos. I'm 66, and hiked some 7 miles the other day, albeit with small gain, but in 1971-72, section hiked the JMT and T-Y Trail. Say, maybe on completion of your Triple Crown, you can start bagging peaks! I did this to 2016, but my body is failing me.
