Leavitt Lake - A High Sierra Gem

- Leavitt Lake is worth the white-knuckle drive to get there!
Leavitt is a high mountain lake at an elevation of just under 98-hundred feet, near Sonora Pass, on the eastern crest of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The road to the lake is one of the highest mountain roads of California. It makes for a great stock 4x4 SUV route for beginners or experienced off-roaders, and the scenery this route gives is spectacular!

From CA108, the dirt trail starts at GPS: 38.304883, -119.591936
Note: Always call the Humbolt-Toyabe National Forest Bridgeport Ranger District office -- (760)932-7070 -- before heading toward Leavitt. Many times I've had the unpleasant surprise of unexpectedly finding the gate closed.

What a GREAT video, very informative, the best I have seen. I have fished and hiked the Leavitt Lake area for 60+ years.
As you said the lake can be very windy, a great place to camp is to take the first left after you cross the stream next to the lake, and go over the knoll for protection from the wind.
That’s usually where we go. The beauty makes up for the breezes!
Nicely done video. Beautiful country. We love the Eastern Sierra’s, but on Mountain Bikes.
Thank you! Anyway you explore these areas is a delight.
@@KenTheJeepGuy spent my childhood days exploring the backcountry riding shotgun in Grandpa’s Jeep. Love Jeeps too!
I was just on this trail today. There is still ALOT of snow on the trail. The trail is washed out in spots. You NEED 4wd and clearance to get up this trail in the spring season. Watch the weather if you go to Leavitt. You do not want to get stuck out here without food and water. I love this video..thank you for sharing this place with me. This place is a very long walk from pinecrest if you get stuck.
You are welcome. I’d always call the ranger district first. I’ve found it closed several times. Glad you didn’t get stuck!
@@KenTheJeepGuy ill get up there sooner than later. Somebody with bigger tires than me had been through there and probably made it to the lake from the looks of their tracks. I have a feeling the trail slowly gets repaired after the winter as more people drive on It.
been trying to get up to lake on my 550 pound adv Moto but got turned around with deep snow earlier this last spring. Made it up once couple years back. Noticed the road has been getting worse every year but its a fun challenge on a big bike. Nice video and that tire shop does bad business !
Planning to take the 1290 Super Adventure to Leavitt Lake this weekend for some camping.
@@GotYaCuffd enjoy! Post a video or let me know how it went. I may go in couple of weeks
Great trail reco as usual Ken! I did this yesterday on stock JTR. Even with longer wheelbase, it was a breeze and not scrapping whatsoever.
Great! I’m sure the lack of precip this winter was kind to all the trails. Spring runoff in a heavy winter can wreak havoc!
Great video, thanks for the info!
Aluminum wheels are known for coming loose...great footage..👍👍👍
that is where I want to go fishing.
Great video! It's been a while, hope to see more new content!
T Mon Thanks! Couple more in the works!
Checkout Forestdale Creek under Carson Pass.
Buen Camino
Tom M Thanks!
Was up there this week, the road is officially closed to vehicles until 2022ish according to the sign at the bottom of the trail. Forest service is hoping to repair the worst parts by then.
Ken we should get toghther and do some trails in Colorado or back to the Rubicón
BCY Would love to! DM me
Thank you for the video, we made it up there in our jk a couple weeks ago. Beautiful. Which keep club are you a part of? I only have one friend with a capable vehicle and would like to meet more!
Hi and you’re welcome. I’m part of Sonora’s “Mud Sweat and Gears.” I’d be glad to meet up and wheel. My days off tend to be midweek.
@@KenTheJeepGuy that’s awesome. I might be able to swing midweek off-roading, I couldn’t find a direct message here on YT, but I think my wife was in contact via email a while back about the trail/road at the top of Sonora pass going through the Marine Corps training grounds

I will fish with you here in the Resurrection friend of Yah!
Ice in June??? Wow.
Awesome video
Thanks!
Are there a lot of trails in that area?
Yes. Behind the Marine Corps training base nearby are a lot of nice little scenic routes.
Trout lake
Where exactly and how do you get here? I have been to Sonora pass several times and must have missed the turn off to this gem?
Sorry, didn’t see your comment until today. Starting point of the trail is at GPS 38.30484, -119.59209
Notice this was published yesterday(July 4th) when did you actually do this? We just came back through the 108 there and there were many cars parked at the entrance.
Actually combined two trips into this video. The second was June 16, 2020. The first was in May sometime, just a day trip and we got stuck in a snowbank and could not get all the way to the lake.
Have fished this lake for almost 60 years, and getting into the lake because of snow can be an issue. I would try the end of June or first part of July. Check with the Forest Service
they lock the gate at the entrance just off 108 during the winter.
