  • @patrickoconnell59

No, the eligibility rules should not be changed! The reason women’s basketball is becoming more popular is players stay, and give the fans buy-in. The one-and-done phenomenon causes fans not to care. The rule also results in college degrees and time for players to live a true college experience. Greed is not everything. Can we just do something right for a change, instead of succumbing to the nose candy of instant gratification?

Clark is definitely is great when you consider that she elevates players with average talent. THe team around her at Iowa are not top level recruits. You can see they depend on Caitlin's court vision and ability to draw defensive attention. Also one of Caitlin's weaknesses when she was younger was that she would get into shooting slumps and compound them with careless mistakes. She has really been limiting that this season. You can argue that Clark still isn't the best defender, (though she's improved) but the tremendous pressure she puts on defenses with her range and ability to find the open teammate offsets any defensive deficiencies she might have.

Blessed to have witnessed all her college career here in Iowa, 10min from home, countless games. To have seen tickets going from 15$ to more than $400 in her last game at home. I go to the University of Iowa and I am yet to met someone who has anything bad to say about her, we studied in the same department, same professors, same halls, some common friends. She was always down to earth, understood her fame and all that comes with it and never said a single word that could lead to misinterpretation. I have not seen any of those WNBA or NCAA stars voluntaring as much as she did here in Iowa, from food banks to charity, she was always there sitting for hours helping others, signing jerseys, etc. Using her name to promote the community.
No matter what happens I will always cheer for her. She could have went anywhere to get a title or to join a superteam, but she stayed home and put Iowa in the map.
Never wanted someone to have won the NCAA title so bad as I did during those 2 Iowa runs.

In terms of marketing herself, it was a blessing in disguise that she "stayed home" by attending Iowa. She was essentially a big fish in a small pond. Had she attended a larger, more established school like UConn which was her first choice she would've sat on the bench the first year. Second, she would've been surrounded by higher talent that would've stolen her thunder. Last, there's no professional sports teams in Iowa so high school and college athletics dominate local news. And of course, she benefitted tremendously through today's social media...something that female athletes didn't enjoy to the same degree 10-20 years ago.

Let's not abuse Pistol Pete's record when he didn't have the three-point shot or shot clock. He scored his points in three seasons. The records need to be separated by significant rule changes. It's the same in the NFL. The Dolphins are held as some sort of wonder team for going 14-0 in the regular season and winning the Super Bowl. They ended with a record of 17-0. The Patriots went 16-0 in the regular season but lost the Super Bowl, ending with an 18-1 record. I think the latter is a much more difficult task and more worthy of praise. Yeah, she's a great basketball player but don't forget to compare oranges to oranges.

You can say the same for a lot of records. For example: Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs in 154 game season.Everyone else had 162 games.Or that Barry Sanders broke Walter Peyton's rushing record in a 16 game season.Where as Payton, had a 14 game season.Records are made to be broken. There are a few that will never be broken though.Such as Cy Young's 511 lifetime wins as a pitcher.Or Ty Cobb's,lifetime .367 batting average. Those two, will stand till the end of time.

Even if that was your only goal, that’s really hard to do for men or women. But they win games too. Playing for the championship.
Also very crucially, it’s an inspirational thing with young girls, for them to see men and women alike genuinely respect a female ball player to THIS degree.
