  • This week we are looking at Technical Fouls in National Federation of High School Basketball Rules. The correct answer whenever a Technical Foul is the ruling is never just "Technical Foul." The correct answer is either:
    Administrative Technical Foul
    Team Technical Foul
    Substitute Technical Foul
    Player Technical Foul or
    Bench Technical Foul.
    As officials, it is critical that we assess the CORRECT technical for the situation and know how to correctly administer the penalty and get the game moving again.
    Analyzing our own game video is the number one way to improve as basketball officials. Following closely behind is analyzing plays from others' games. What can we learn from the officials on these plays? Let's review positioning, working of the system, call accuracy, rules knowledge and game management. It all comes together on the court. Let's look at Plays!

      ruclips.net/video/LDeX24HKR4A/видео.html the link above is of an 8th grade game that happened on Monday. If you skip to around the 34:00 off the linked video, there is a shooting foul followed by a double player technical foul (a player from each team got tied up with one another). If I’m interpreting the rule correctly, Rule 10-7 Penalties. The Double Technical was not adjudicated correctly. White gets free throws with no one on the lanes and possession. You’ve taught me that you never go to the arrow on a double technical… it’s point of interruption, which was after the shooting foul, so the free throws should have been taken as normal.
      Not my team, but in this situation, I would respectfully protest the game under not adjudicating the penalty described in Rule 10.7 in regard to a double technical foul.

    Greg, thanks for all the educational material that you present through this channel... I have to congratulate you for how clear and simple your presentations are, great explanations and considerations on play situations, a practical manner to learn and improve our present officiating basketball skills.
    Talking about play #5 situation from this presentation, I'll like to mention the usage of "Common Sense" it's a great officiating tool that always have to be present in our officiating toolbox, this tool allow officials to keep things simple and practical...Thank you so much for your advice on this play situation getting this game going with the first extra time period since the game ended up with a tide score 54-54... Great interpretation, "Common Sense " a valuable tool!

    Related to the Bonus Play. There is a school in Orange County, CA that has a tradition of throwing toilet paper onto the court on their first made three pointer of the game. They call it “Making it Rain”.
    The coach has accepted that it will be a technical foul. However, I have not seen him lose his coaching box privilege from this. I also see why that is a technical foul as it directly interrupts the game whereas the bonus play was a “delay” that happened during an intermission.
    Also, once the technical foul was assessed, wouldn’t the OT period begin with 2 free throws and then a spot throw-in opposite the scorer’s table? I thought it was incorrect that they did a jump ball after the free throws.
    Love these videos!!

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  2 года назад

      Hi Shane!
      In the Make It Rain scenario, a team technical foul would be assessed. Team technical fouls have no impact on the head coach, only bench technical fouls or direct technical fouls on the head coach do.
      I agree with your assessment about the impact on the game during intermission versus during the game where it is clear and obvious.
      In regards to resuming play in overtime you are absolutely correct the crew here makes the mistake of having a jump ball.

    Greg: I have a strange question on play 4, that is related. Team B calls a timeout, Team A comes out of the timeout with only 4 players and the 5th player is by the bench tying his shoe (same 5 players in the game as before the timeout). 5th player finishes tying his shoe and runs out into the play. A5 gets called for a substitute technical foul. I’m pretty sure the official was right in this scenario.
    I always tell my players if you’re shoe isn’t tied when the ball is ready to play to tie their shoe between the 84’x 50’,
    Correct me if I’m wrong, Greg, if an official calls a substitute technical on a player who is legally on the floor (after a timeout), even if it’s 6 inches, I would have right to protest the game, due to the official assessing a substitute technical foul on a player legally on the floor.

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  2 года назад

      If the player is on the court, even if 'hidden' in plain sight, they are certainly legal.
      I'd need more information about the timing of the run onto the court to offer correct/incorrect.
      In any event it would NOT be a Substitute Technical, as the player wasn't a substitute.

    This is from September 2021, so I’m sure somebody has addressed it… But since it was a alternate position throw in, if I’m correct you may have neglected to say that the penalty for the technical foul is two shots and the ball- therefore the ensuing throw in, is a result of a technical foul, which would allow white to keep the arrow

    Just watched a play where a player was incorrectly given a free throw (which he made) after the allowable time frame to correct an error had elapsed. After allowing the unmerited free throw (which was good), isn't there another opportunity to immediately correct that error of letting a player shoot an unmerited foul shot? In other words, this would be a scenerio where there's 2 correctable error situations back- to- back. Shouldn't the officials be able to stop play after the unmerited successful free throw, during the allowable time frame to correct the error, discuss and rule that the unmerited free throw should be disallowed?

    Greg, on play #2, if a delay of game warning had already been called, would there have been two technicals called? One more in addition to the reaching through and touching the ball?

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  2 года назад +1

      Great question Mark!
      No there would not be two technicals. NFHS issued a case play that addresses this. Only the player action is penalized in that instance.

    Really like and appreciate these videos. I have supported the channel monetarily…but the only word of advice I’d have is speed up pace of the videos and content. These are painfully slow going in my humble opinion. Again, love the content and quality, but shortening them and making them more concise and to the point would be helpful.

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  2 года назад +1

      Hi Peter! I hear you.
      Appreciate the support!
      By going to a livestream format (we livestream the recording of the show) has knocked down the barriers to getting videos out. the result is 20 5 Play Fridays in 20 weeks. This is a positive, but it does lead to longer videos.
      In an effort to help with that, there are timestamps for all of the plays. This allows you to watch play 1, then immediately play 2, then play 3.
      If you want to stick around for analysis of the play, you can make that choice or not. It gives you more control as the viewer about how quickly you can get the value you seek.
      Let me know if using that approach helps.

    With the play when the Lead official was displaced followed by the Intentional foul which was followed by the technical foul, how were things administered? 2 free throws for the intentional foul followed by 2 free throws for the technical followed by a throw from the Division line? V interesting scenario on bonus video! Team TF is a right call after the crowd throng into the court. Because the official crews knew jolly well n preempted tt success ball made with holding in 0.3 second is not possible as per the rule. As soon as the ball dramatically got in, official alry blown whistle w hand signal to nullify the score n shouted no count! Under normal circumstances, OT shall be resumed after a minute. Hence the home coach shall bear responsibility for the chaotic situation n interruption gave rise by his followers. Two free throws shall be awarded followed by throw in at divisional line. That’s all!

      Read the situation. No way I'm T'ing up the crowd unless there are obvious incidents of fans going after the other team's players. I think managing the situation there and allowing the fans back into the stands is better discretion. Plus the guys didn't know that the T is administered in OT. I don't envy these guys. There's a lot to consider at a highly electric moment in the game.

    since you are talking technical fouls at about 19:30-19:42 you mention that the tech can be shot by any eligible player but also maybe a good additional comment would be that the technical is a player technical and team foul but this one is NOT an indirect technical on the coach.

    Obviously the call disallowing the goal by try due to having 0.3 seconds is correct. Good mechanics in that case by the crew to quickly rule no good clearly - looks like the C official here was really trying to make that call very clear and avoid what ultimately happened. That being said, we have the benefit of being able to slow the play down here and it looks like in a perfect world 0.7 seconds would have been a better value to put on the clock. However, if this were to happen in any of my association's games, I'd bet it's more likely that it would be put at 1 second (correct or not).
    I agree with your analysis Greg on not issuing the team technical. The commentary was placed within the rule book as you cited rather than just the case book for a reason. "Discretion must be used in ruling such fouls" is the key phrase here, and I believe the crew went too far here. Other sources such as Rules by Topic I think also make it clear that we must avoid issuing technical fouls against a crowd outside of extreme circumstances - this was not an extreme circumstance. Was anyone on the court trying to intentionally cause a scene or stop a game clearly in progress? No, they (erroneously) thought the game was over. I feel the crew in this case inserted themselves too much into the game. In a nutshell, just because we CAN issue a T here doesn't necessarily mean we SHOULD.

    • @fiscalcpiano

      You said "Obviously the call disallowing the goal by try due to having 0.3 seconds is correct". I watched the video and read your comment but I'm still not sure why disallowing the 0.3 second effort was the right call. Is the problem that the remaining time was 0.3 seconds? I thought that the game progressed to 0.3 seconds which is why that time was still on the clock. Is the issue that the clock time is different than the ref crew's time? Thanks for explaining

    • @sinman3602

      @@MonarchEAS No, because by rule 5-6-2 the 4th quarter ended with the attempted catch and shoot. The overtime period therefore began when the first technical foul free throw was administered, as that was the first live ball in the period. At that point, overtime has begun and it must be continued.

    Bonus Play: It cannot be stated enough: all officials, but especially the non-calling officials, have to be aware of the time on the clock on every whistle, especially near the end of any period.. (And, yes, I still forget to check from time to time.) #ReplayCrew

    • @mikegoodwin2148

      It appears that the calling official puts his hand up using the "stop clock" signal with just about 1:0 to go but his whistle doesn't sound until the clock shows 0:0 (if audio & video are synched; which they seem to be). Good to see they put time back on the clock.
      The video is continuous. At 73 seconds elapsed time following the disallowed goal, the camera cuts back to the crew inviting the head coaches to a conference. As there was no appreciable delay under 2-8-1 that interfered with the proper conduct of the game, the ruling of a team technical foul on the home team was not appropriate (just as Greg pointed out). #ReplayCrew

    Red 33, technical foul for taunting, 2 FTs to any White player.
    Red 33, technical foul for baiting, ejected to the bench for the 2 technicals, 2 FTs to any White player.
