Michael found a gem of a motor and when he disassembled it there was reason for great joy. These little Toyota "Hemi" motors are sought after in the Toyota community. To find one in the U.S. in your own back yard is crazy. It's the equivalent of finding a 427 SOHC motor just across town with all the right NASCAR mods.
Some words from Michael about the history of this motor and other versions of it.
    - Toyota partnered with Yamaha to create DOHC engines for several cars in their line up. The U.S. never received any of those vehicles, but most of Toyota’s other markets did. In the late 60’s, the first generation of Corollas equipped with the 2TG DOHC Toyota/Yamaha engines were referred to as “Sprinter Trueno” - trueno being the Spanish word for Thunder.
The second gen Corollas (71-74) with the DOHC engines were badged as “Levin” -- an old English word for Lightning. So Toyota had a Thunder & Lightning theme for their high performance offerings. An aside -- a slightly different version of the same DOHC head was engineered by Yamaha for Toyota’s SOHC 18R engines -- designated as an 18RG in the DOHC version. That engine in 2.0L displacement was the high performance offering in the Celica. And, once again, we were never treated to that little jewel here in the U.S.

A slight edit to the comments up above --- a few of Toyota's 2000GTs (LOTS of help from Yamaha) came to the U.S. in 67/68. So, technically, incorrect for me to say that we didn't get any of them here. But we got very, very few.

Ran a 2 liter and a 3tg i called it. I used a 74 TE27. Best fun ever. I was at Bryar racetrack in New Hampshire. I passed a 911 up the hill and they got mad because an old Toyota was faster. This was back in the 80's. I used an HKS gear drive 44mm Mikuni's. Locked rear end. We made our own EFI using a 2 liter Dastun computer 200 SX. The only bad thing about the oil pan is it does not like right hand turns i lost oil pressure I had to make a windage tray for it.

LOL - 3 of us picked it and put it on the stand Bob. We rolled the stand onto the trailer and took it to the house - rolled it right into the garage.

even the single cam push rod hemi 1.8’s can handle lots of power. pistons rods cam n valve springs can push 500 whp with 20 lbs of boost

Not entirely certain Chris. The folks in the know on the FB 2TG group are pretty sure those pistons have it somewhere in the 9.7 to 10.5:1 range.

These motors are tough 5 main bearings. I built one around 1991 very similar good for around 200 hp. I had the crank from the 3tc and 90mm arias pistons. Stock rods. HKS lightweight flywheel. Headers and mikuni 44phh carbs

@@PuristMotorsports A 1980 lift back Corolla. I was here in the states and could not find a decent smaller body like a 72 sprinter or a starlet. I wanted trd cams but $500 for a pair. Ended up getting Isky cams and setting up valve clearance was a pain. Had to do it using Toyota charts for sizing and removing cams to swap shims. I miss that car. Actually using the pushrod version 2tc or 3tc if you do all the mods will be close to the power of the twin cam head

A friend of mine is the one building this car. He’s a mechanical engineer and is a stickler for details. He just bought a pair of early “non emission” cams with more duration and a little more lift I believe. He’s in the process of working to get something sold and then will be back on this project. He’s got a lot of video for me to get from him. I’ll have to edit it down.
My Mom had an 81 hatchback Corolla (“lift back” as you said) she bought brand new. She still talks about that car. It was still being driven as of 10 years ago. Not sure where it is now.

Sounds like we could call it a PT Cruiser? Purist Toyota Cruiser? Forgive the pun. It’s great seeing a video of Michael’s engine. What’s the compression ratio of that beautiful hemi Michael?

We’ve got to get with Michael and update this. He’s taken a bunch of video and we’re trying to coordinate schedules this fall/winter to get those files and some audio with him. He’s got it running but did run into some speed bumps.

Would love to see an update, have a 2tg under my bench. I got a running 18rg to save time, but would still love to build the 2tg in the coming year.

@@213davidhunter stay tuned. Michael and I live a days drive apart. We're conversing on getting the files transferred. He did have a few "gotchas" which would definitely help others in a build.
