    Under rated video. The only other option that my dad did was replace the whole cover. I now own the house and with it the pool and I will NOT be buying a new cover if/when it breaks. Thank you for this video.

      Thanks. Since then the cover developed rips and started to leak. I patched it up with a vinyl repair kit. It is still going strong.

      Xq@@AlanSNasar I used a patch on one of the sides since there was a small tear, however what that did was cause the cover to retract crooked when opening the pool. I will have to patch the other side just to make it even.

    Nice job! It is very tedious work but you are right, it's about the only way to get this job done and you can do the repair with out taking off the cover.

    It looks like I might be doing this exact job. Possibly this week. I wonder if it can be done without that kit, just with rope and webbing? Today, after discovering the broken rope and exiting stage left to Google-land and also the Aquamatic website, I got the impression that what was required was "1/4-inch Poly rope". Ran to the local West Marine and bought 350 feet of quality poly rope for $$$$ouch$$$.
    My general impression was that the rope for these covers is attached to a plastic piece with four screws - you screw through the rope into the plastic. But the factory rope ( which BTW is not poly, but just cotton, like you use on a clothesline ) seems to continue past the plastic piece, forming the edge of the actual cover.
    Will be calling tech support at Aquamatic tomorrow.

      High quality rope and webbing will work fine. The rope goes through the plastic block but doesn’t attach to it, it attaches to the cover and is sewn into the cover edge.

    Can you tell me how you fed the rope through without taking out the track? For me, that’s the most daunting part.

    • @AlanSNasar
      @AlanSNasar  Год назад

      All you do is sew a thread through the rope end. You then lead the rope into the track while holding the thread in your other hand. You then pull the rope through the track and around the pulley and back with the thread.

    Does they rope run straight through the cover in one continues rope? that is how it looks on my cover. So here..with this repair..we are adding a new rope spliced on at the leading edge of the cover??

    • @AlanSNasar
      @AlanSNasar  4 года назад

      Yes, the factory product has one continuous rope. Yes, we are adding a rope and splicing and oversewing.

    How did you get the rope around the pulley and back down the other side? I can't the new rope past the pulley and pull it back. Thanks. Great video.

      If you watch my video at around two minutes 50 seconds I show you how I put a thread through the end of the rope and then pull it through the track to the front of the pool past the pulley and back to the motor.

    Any tips how to replace a rope if the old rope is completely out?

    • @AlanSNasar
      @AlanSNasar  7 лет назад

      The rope can not be repaired. To replace the rope, follow the instructions in the video. The cover has to be exposed on the side that you are working on. The old rope has to be cut out and a new rope sewn in place.

    is there a certain brand or type of string used in the awl to attach the rope back to pool cover

    • @AlanSNasar
      @AlanSNasar  3 года назад +1

      I just use the basic polyester waxed thread that came with the awl. It has held up for four years already so I think it is durable.

    Where/how did you buy your rope with webbing replacement? If your rope has not broken can you just resew the webbing? Do you know what the webbing material is and can it be bought at a fabric store? Thank you.

    • @AlanSNasar
      @AlanSNasar  3 года назад

      I bought the rope repair kit and sewing all from automaticpoolcoverparts.com They have a rope repair kit with webbing. They also sell the sewing awl that you will need. I don’t know what material it is. I think you can resell the wedding if that is all that happened but I don’t see how the rope could pull out without tearing.

      @@AlanSNasar thank you for your reply! there are 2 spots. one the webbing ripped, but not the rope, so figured I just need to cut out webbing and reinstall, just worried about the overlap. the second spot, the webbing came detached from the cover, so hopefully that just needs to be re-sewn.

      Alan S. Nasar that’s good to know! I found your blog with instructions as well. One thing to add to the list of materials is a sturdy leather awl. I broke both needles on the speedy stitcher trying to get through the 6 layers of material on the triangle section. Other than that it’s going well.

    Hi all. For a cover pools cover, i would highly recommend a "quick attach rope repair kit". There are a few websites detailing the different options depending on the type of glider you need. This kit skips all of the ripping and stitching and took me about 30 minutes to install from start to finish.

    • @AlanSNasar
      @AlanSNasar  2 года назад

      Jeff, I am not sure how that works. I searched for the product but could not find detailed pictures or video.

      Take a look at cover pools part #060098 for the full left and right assemblies with rope. If you search for part #180138 you will find an installation document from one of the top results.

      @@skiing3151 Did you install this part? Was it easier than sewing?

    • @skiing3151
      @skiing3151 Год назад

      @@JasonLiske yes. The instructions are excellent and it is rather fast, primarily depending on your level of experience with pool covers. It was our first time attempting the repair. We did both sides of our cover. One side already had a quick attach repair, so that was even faster (since the cover was already cut appropriately) - we replaced this because the rope and the guide were both worn beyond their useful life. The other side was replaced so both had matching life on the ropes.
