Where did you get the bench for the harp to sit on! Im trying to find something for the same harp that way I dont have to sit too low on the ground
Very Beautiful! Dear Maia could you install a levers mechanism under the harp strings? Show the mandals of the kanun to an instrument builder. Maybe some adaptation may be possible or a different design of the levers. That way you can get microtones. The changing speed will still be less than with the kanun because you have to reach up high. Just a suggestion.
Dear Alex,
Yes, it is technically possible to add other levers on top of the strings in the same way that the kanun has several mandals! That being said, harp strings are thicker and have more tension than those of the kanun so using kanun mandals as they are wouldn't work (not to mention that because the mandals are very light and offer very little resistance in order to be moved quickly as a group when needed, in a vertical position gravity would make them fall back down easily every time I raised them). The best would be to have "just" one extra lever on the harp above the existing one for quarter tones (ideally coupled with the existing lever so that when the bottom lever is moved, the one above automatically goes up as well, to avoid having to grab the two levers at the same time when one wants to play halftones). The issue is that any additional levers would make it that much harder to produce halftones (more than 1 lever to raise = more strength needed and a more complex gesture) so I do have to evaluate how much I use microtones and if it is worth it to make it harder to play halftones. A the moment, when a piece includes microtones I prefer using my pedal harp, on which I have a couple of tricks to play them :) [Regarding changing speed, several virtuoso lever harpists actually play high up in the strings on the left hand to minimize the distance to reach the levers and be able to change them faster!]
@@maiadarme Many Thanks dear Maia! A great consideration for the adaptation! You named all the ways possible! Mrs Şirin Pancaroğlu may show some things. She plays harp and çeng. A book from Greece shows Greek modes in half-tones. These modes may have names seen in Arabic music but differ. Laikoi Dromoi is the book title. Chord cycles are given too for harmonization. From Fagotto publishers. The book was for bouzouki players. [The English title> Greek Folk Scales and their practical approach]There s yet one more book showing how these modes are interlinked by common tetrachords. This second book is just Laikoi Dromoi and it s all in Greek but scores of examples are given. Both books are by Haralambos Payiatis, also from Fagotto publishers. I am particularly fond of Stavros Xarhakos' and Manos Hatzidakis' work as Greek composers. Ioannis Koukouzelis is a Composer of Byzantine music. I hope you ll listen to them. They are all amazing.
Fascinating! What key is your harp tuned to?
Thanks! My harp is tuned in Eb, which allows me to play in the widest variety of keys given the levers system (I have levers on top of each string to raise their pitch by a semitone). Since this piece is in D minor, I kept the levers on my E and A strings up to have E naturals and A naturals instead of E flats and A flats, therefore effectively tuning my harp in D minor. (I also occasionally raise a C string lever throughout the piece when I need a C sharp instead of a C natural).
