So weird coming back to old episodes... the room reverb, background voices lol. They've come a long way. Congratulating on your success with the show guys!
I love The Pedal Show! You guys have a very natural way of getting things across and with a sense of humour too! I have learned SO much about gain, eq curves and placement and now actually understand WHY something works with a certain amp and why it doesn't with others. Invaluable! I have my popcorn and 6 pack ready and am just about to press play. Awesome!
I was - Dead Set - Against Fuzz/Muff Pedals, as they were all Too Woofy, Too Bassy and Sounded like Bees in a Can. Today I received my Thorpy Fallout Cloud. O.M.G. It Sounds even- Better (in person) = Sustain for days . . . (think) Santana & Gilmour, Tony Iommi . . . by far - the Best Muff Pedal - I have heard. I Love It. Sounds Amazing.
Never really cared for Fuzzes until hearing the ThorpyFX Fallot Cloud. Bought one a few months ago that changed my perspective on Fuzz pedals. Amazing definition but you can still get that tearing Velcro sound also. I’ve never heard such articulation from a Fuzz. Well worth the price!
This may be one of the best videos for hearing some differences between the Fender Strat and the Les Paul. They both sound great and offer unique tones, but dang...those humbuckers really shine on the fuzz.
Great to have ye back guys!!! Very interesting episode, was never really into fuzzes but my god that Thorpy Muffroom Cloud is awesome!!! Got very excited when i saw the two rock in the background!!! its my dream amp that I'm slowly saving away for! Well done again Gents!
So heartwarming that since this video was made EHX have taken back the Big Muff and now produce some of the best muffs at any price. It's the people's fuzz once again.
Some GREAT sounds in here - especially Mick's single coils! My favourite (so far) at least is the triangle (although I love the super stonery sound of the both-channel Pumpkin Pi!).
Ah Big Muffery. Ive had so many over the years, I feel like Hef at times. My personal favs are: Stomp Under Foot's Civil War, Arc Effects Big Green Pi v1 and Mojo Hand's Collossus. Great showing, guys.
Someone mentioned this earlier...definitely would have liked to see the Swollen Pickle in the mix since it pops up so often here in the States. But loved the show...gonna' have to get my hands on a Thorpy or JHS soon.
So happy I managed to swap an old Holy Grail reverb for a Thorpy Muffroom cloud today! It was a pedal i hadn't used for 9 years, just collecting dust! Then I saw them going for 150 dollars on Reverb so I chanced my luck, can't wait to go to the studio now!
It's a fantastic piece of kit. Super articulate, the EQ makes it really stand out. It can even be used as an overdrive. Very versatile. And the build quality cannot be beat. Thorpy is probably my favorite pedal maker right now.
Wow just watching over some old episodes (because im soooo sad like that) and its crazy how the changes have seemed so subtle but wow the difference is stark. Well done guys!
Legends! After searching for this episode after watching the bonzai episode again! I could not believe that it was this long ago!! It's on my list, maybe even first......still. B
I'm glad to hear you saying the Nano Big Muff isn't quite up to it. I bought one on a bit of impulse a year or two ago and just didn't like it. I met quite a bit of push back from people saying it was fantastic. But the Nano really didn't live up to what I was wanting.
I Ordered my Thorpy Fx Fallout Cloud / Muff ( 3 days ago ) and Mr. Adrian Thorpe was Extremely nice, so helpful and accommodating. Not only are his pedals Top-notch, but the client service was equally incredible. Great experience thus-far & Best Muff I have ever heard ( and I was Anti-Muff / Fuzz ) Until now. Thorpy took it to Another Level !!!
Half the time, when I hear a fuzz tone I love, some kind of Big Muff is being used! The only exceptions to that I'm aware of are Eric Johnson and Hendrix, everyone else seems to be using some kind of Muff or clone thereof
Glad you did this one on Fuzz. I'm on the fence about this subject. I don't own any pedals and watch this show for research. Currently I use Guitar Rig 5 through my Home Studio monitors and recording obviously. I'm in the market for amp and pedals for live gigs. Thanks Guys, your show is awesome! James Bay is my favorite episode.
Thought triangle was gonna be the winner the whole way ... Muffuletta won that with its smaller size and similar sounds. Thorpy won that with just being the best by far.
That was great Dan, really did give me what I needed to make an informed choice. Was gonna bid on a vintage 78 ehx muff but think I'm going to have to go somewhere and try both the muffeletta and the muffroomcloud cuz the both blew me away , cheers guy's
When you think of Big Muffs you think of the Foo Fighters? Do they even use fuzz? I thought he was going to say Dinosaur Jr. or Smashing Pumpkins. When I think of op-amp muff, I immediately think of J Mascis and Billy Corgan (hence the reason why they both have fuzz copies on that board).
Thanks Dan and Mick for getting to the muffs finally. They say no two muff circuits were they same they all vary slightly not unlike Marshalls from the 70s. And for the record the Rams Head is the best muff circuit lol ;)
All of these tweaky, boutique Big Muff clones are cool in their own way, but by far the most versatile and feature loaded iteration is the current era Deluxe Big Muff Pi. You can accurately obtain the tone of all previous versions - like the JHS Muffaletta, except it does a much better job at half the price. It also has a separate mids circuit for cutting through the mix, a bass boost switch so that your lows aren't castrated when you turn up the tone knob, and its secret weapon... an Attack control, which preserves your note clarity and makes the Big Muff much less farty. I'm truly surprised that the Deluxe has never been used on TPS. It's really the ultimate BMP.
Billy Corgan, Jack White, Black Keys, David Gilmour and Dinosaur Jr all have created unique, definitive Big Muff tones using different versions (eras) of the pedal (OpAmp, NYC, Green Russian, Civil War & Ram's Head respectively).
I really enjoy watching your videos. I thought your brief history of Muffs was a bit spotty. You didn't mention the two transistor Muff Fuzz that started it all. You also didn't mention the Rams Head Muff that came after the Triangle and precedes the NYC op-amp vs.. Minor details, and as always, I really enjoy your pedal demo/comparisons. Cheers!
I am a fan of Mick's playing style ever since i saw a demo on the Guitarist channel. His American Vintage just sounds like something else (that's my next guitar). As for you, Daniel, you are legit if you use the Grolsh rubber rings to secure the strap. I did that the first time i opened a Grolsh beer. Great players think alike. Cheers to you and great video btw.
That Iron Bell is that track Sorrow on Momentary Lapse of Reason, but that track was actually David's rig cranked in a live venue and recorded that way. He would have been using various compressors and either the Boogie Studio Pre (or a Mark IV head) as a gain "pedal" - and somehow was able to get his kind of thing from the Boss HM-2. But as you say, there's usually a lot going on around his use of the Muff's. I have seen 3 boss eq's that look like they are set for boost low, boost mid, boost hi. He would have used combinations based on mood, room, how the amps were behaving, etc. He is one more great who seems so effortless, but is like Edge from U2: running a small space station from his feet.
I thought the Muffuletta was the worst of the lot. Muffroom Cloud is the dog's bollox. WOW! Vick Audio '73 Ram's Head should have been included in this. great demo for sure.
I think a bit part why people are so split on fuzz is because a lot of people forget that fuzz is primarily designed for single coils. I can't say I've been playing long enough to know and personally compare the difference, but I'm just regurgitating what has been told to me by a few fuzz pedal makers.
That Triangle sounds so good, I want to get the Blackout Effectors twosome partly to be able to get some many fuzz tones from one pedal on my board (rather then cramming heaps of pedals onto it) but Im afraid the musket cant get close to the sound of triangle muff for that gilmour sound
Smashing pumpkins should have been mentioned. Thorpy is 3 times the price of Way Huge Swollen Pickle, which should have been in the demo. Maybe check one out? It has scoop, crunch compression, internal voice switch, sustain, etc. It is a popular and great fuzz.
Fantastic sounds Guys. My favourite was the Peach fuzz ( are fuzzes different to Muffs ? …. with regards to pedals I mean ! ). Also did I detect Mick playing a bit of Hendrix at the 21 min mark ? ( Radio 1, live at the BBC ).
RAMS HEAD. I guess the iron bell is one with a on board colorsound boost function and the fuzz munchkin is one and the big mudd. No basic audio, no stomp under foot?
So weird coming back to old episodes... the room reverb, background voices lol. They've come a long way. Congratulating on your success with the show guys!
The JHS Muffaletta covers pretty much everything I need.
Instablaster...
Ya, I'm there. From grunge distortion to violin sustain.
I don't think people understand how good of a chugger the Ram's Head is too LMFAO
I’d love to see you guys do a new Big Muff video comparing the recent (ish) EHX reissues to the originals.
Awesome!
Thorpy Muffroom Cloud section starts at 23:36. Sounds at 24:30.
Look at these two scammers^^^^
Thanks for the heads up. I just got a "fallout cloud". The "muffroom" was too expensive unfortunately. Still, fucking love the pedal.
OK?
The days when you guys had to share a patch cable; how far you've come.
The condition of that original triangle Big Muff is unbelievable. It looks like it just came out of the box.
You guys need to make another video on the Big Muff! It's been a while since this one. Love from Brazil!
Who knew Mick could play Stoner Rock so well? Amazing episode as always!
30 minutes of you guys... oh this will be a treat! Thank you!
As one of the people who was clamouring for a show about Muffs, I'd like to say thanks very much guys! Loved it.
I want to hug Daniel for some strange reason. He just looks very huggable.
Exactly what I was looking for. Perfect fuzz off. Thank you, gentlemen!
The original Triangle, Thorpy and Tyms own the rest of them!
Pumkin Pi for me thanks. Love that breakin up everything sound.
That pumpkin pi is killerrrrrr
Ah Big Muffery. Ive had so many over the years, I feel like Hef at times. My personal favs are: Stomp Under Foot's Civil War, Arc Effects Big Green Pi v1 and Mojo Hand's Collossus. Great showing, guys.
Someone mentioned this earlier...definitely would have liked to see the Swollen Pickle in the mix since it pops up so often here in the States. But loved the show...gonna' have to get my hands on a Thorpy or JHS soon.
Videos like this need a love button instead of just a thumbs up. Big Muff's are awesome!
+Michael Guess-me yeah they are :)
I wanted the muffeletta now I want the Thorpy ... or both, or three of each.
The Muffroom is awesome 🤩
I don't know how I only just discovered your channel guys, but I've been a watching and you are both very entertaining and very informative to watch!
The muffroom cloud is the best sounding fuzz I've ever heard
It's a fantastic piece of kit. Super articulate, the EQ makes it really stand out. It can even be used as an overdrive. Very versatile. And the build quality cannot be beat. Thorpy is probably my favorite pedal maker right now.
3:37 - 3:51 sold the pedal. Thank you!
Wow just watching over some old episodes (because im soooo sad like that) and its crazy how the changes have seemed so subtle but wow the difference is stark. Well done guys!
Pedalboards of Doom cheers mate :)
Loved this episode guys! Muff diving is beautiful!!!
Legends! After searching for this episode after watching the bonzai episode again! I could not believe that it was this long ago!! It's on my list, maybe even first......still. B
Cheers mate, yeah, so much has changed
this video feels like it was taped in 1985. so much That Pedal Show evolution in just a couple years!
I'm glad to hear you saying the Nano Big Muff isn't quite up to it. I bought one on a bit of impulse a year or two ago and just didn't like it. I met quite a bit of push back from people saying it was fantastic. But the Nano really didn't live up to what I was wanting.
+CaptPostmod there are some really great muffy type peds out there, but the Mufftoom really is something special
Loved this! Thanks guys - bought the Big Muff Nano because of this! :)
Love love love This episode! Hope you Will do one Like This , But with tubescreamers :)
So happy you guys are back "on the air"!
Great episode Dan and Mick :-)
Really enjoyed this one guys! Glad the show is back!! :)
Look how YOUNG they were!
Half the time, when I hear a fuzz tone I love, some kind of Big Muff is being used! The only exceptions to that I'm aware of are Eric Johnson and Hendrix, everyone else seems to be using some kind of Muff or clone thereof
Man that Muffroom Cloud sounds amazing!
I feel EXACTLY the same when I hear that Mick! ( @ 3:59 )
LOL!
Can you guys please revisit the muff thing? ? There are so many version and I cant decide
No Earthquaker Devices Hoof?! :/
Thought triangle was gonna be the winner the whole way ... Muffuletta won that with its smaller size and similar sounds. Thorpy won that with just being the best by far.
Really needed that, updating the wish list. Thanks guys
That was great Dan, really did give me what I needed to make an informed choice. Was gonna bid on a vintage 78 ehx muff but think I'm going to have to go somewhere and try both the muffeletta and the muffroomcloud cuz the both blew me away , cheers guy's
WOOP ITS FRIDAY!!!
Its A MUFF Party!!
Thx for the show!
Love the Peachfuzz..... Have used it for years...
On occasion they use fuzz but I would definitely say they're more of a distortion based band. Fuzz is QOTSA
They're DEFINITELY fuzz but use it it a more modern way as all of the other bands you mentioned stick to the roots of that genre.
+NICKHAM16 A lot of the first FooF album is pretty muff heavy. Dave used it more as a distortion pedal than a fuzz. Lower gain and pretty open tone.
+Nate Popodi I have read that Grohl used a turbo rat. It does sound like a rat to me, but rats sound like big muffs sometimes.
+three mile smile that's a more recent development from what I've heard
Great show.....The best yet keep up the good work.
Isley brothers!!!!!!! Nice! Wow will always notice the muff tone there now thanks for that
Daniel..causing me to spend money again. Great review guys
that Muffroom Cloud sounds very very close to my v7 black russian, my personal favorite
Dan have you ever played wren and cuff pedals?
That pumpkin one was the surprise for me!
Muff-Mania!!! You guys are great!!
just a couple of guys doing a deep muff dive, so many muffs so little time.
Thanks Dan and Mick for getting to the muffs finally. They say no two muff circuits were they same they all vary slightly not unlike Marshalls from the 70s. And for the record the Rams Head is the best muff circuit lol ;)
HAHA, how many times have Daniel not been able to pick a favorite?? "It's really hard, I love them all".. Classic!! :D
All of these tweaky, boutique Big Muff clones are cool in their own way, but by far the most versatile and feature loaded iteration is the current era Deluxe Big Muff Pi. stilwel not to mention what Duane Allman did with his big muff
Annie Clark of St. Vincent has a whole song dedicated to it.
stilwel his tone was still mostly the Super Bass with the muff used as a bit of a boost wasn't it?
Gilmour used Ram's Head i thought?
He started with a Silicon Fuzz Face
I really enjoy watching your videos. I thought your brief history of Muffs was a bit spotty. You didn't mention the two transistor Muff Fuzz that started it all. Pumpkin Pi rules all \m/
Fantastic video! Thanks!
Thanks for using dissolves instead of jump cuts
for anyone interested frantone is back so you can get the peach fuzz
I thought the Muffuletta was the worst of the lot. Muffroom Cloud is the dog's bollox. WOW!
Vick Audio '73 Ram's Head should have been included in this. great demo for sure.
Loving this. Thankyou.
If you put an EQ pedal after a big muff you can shape it the way you want.
You made my day! THANKS
RUclips NEEDS to add a Poll option for viewers, given how common comparison videos are.
I really missed the Blackarts Fuzzes in this episode, they are the nastiest fuzzes around
Woop! New episode
I would've lent my Cornish G2 and NG-2!!
Where's the Basic Audio Tri/Ram?! My personal favourite!
Put some glasses on!!! You're freaking me out, man. : )
The Big Muff OP amp works Great for me!
I think a bit part why people are so split on fuzz is because a lot of people forget that fuzz is primarily designed for single coils. I can't say I've been playing long enough to know and personally compare the difference, but I'm just regurgitating what has been told to me by a few fuzz pedal makers.

Please do a show with the (new) Big Muff Deluxe by EHX!
It looked like the Mojo Hand pedal said RON BELL. He's a slip and fall lawyer around these parts.
I thought maybe he was branching out.
His pedals come with Banana Peels on the bottom instead of velcro.
Muffroom cloud vs Muffuletta? Gunshot vs Angry Charlie? I think Thorpy is killing JHS one pedal at a time...
Smashing pumpkins should have been mentioned. Thorpy is 3 times the price of Way Huge Swollen Pickle, which should have been in the demo. Maybe check one out? It has scoop, crunch compression, internal voice switch, sustain, etc. It is a popular and great fuzz.
Great video
but man, I miss a Skreddy muff in there!
Yeah and Buffalo FX. :)
Skreedy P-19 is a Killer Muff
Sold! Need to get me a Muffroom!
that thorpy certainly is nice.
i liked the o.g. triangle second best.
Wish you guys had some of the Stomp Underfoot stuff and Wren and Cuff pedals. They have always seemed like the definitive muff clone producers.
Can this be updated on the new @thatpedalshow channel please?
Wasn't the Fuzz Munchkin reverse engineered from one of J Mascis' muffs?
Great show as always Guys. Dan, is the Muffuletta sensitive to where it sits in your pedal chain?
Isn't the fuzz munchkin based on J Mascis' rams head?
RAMS HEAD. I guess the iron bell is one with a on board colorsound boost function and the fuzz munchkin is one and the big mudd. No basic audio, no stomp under foot?
Love it!
Here I am watching this video again...
