the tiger is one of (if not) the biggest cowards of all animals, the tiger only kills innocent animals (like cows, deer and smaller animals), but the tiger can barely kill a sloth bear, much less kill a strong animal that can fight back (like the lion).
The tiger is strong, but it cannot deal with animals that can counterattack (such as lion, bear, leopard, dog, elephant, rhino, wild boar, etc.)
the tiger is strong enough to kill a gaur, but now not more than that.

The most powerful lion ever known was, on average, the American lion, which could reach roughly twice the size of modern African lions. The American lion may have not been a lion, however the jaguar and lion are its closest taxonomic relatives.
The “American lion” alone is not a subspecies, but a species.
Also, it is in fact a lion, separate from the extant species.
