I've been running track for 59 years both nationally as an open athlete and as a master's runner, and I have this argument at every meet with the meet director, kids of 5-6 years old should not be running 400 meters and up, their cardio systems are not fully developed, they go out way too fast, and they are too young to train, running short sprints up to 200m is fine, just have fun, keep the pressure off get involved in a variety of sports until they are old enough to hone in on 1 or 2, then train them.

Like I could calmly jog besides them. But I couldn't... It would be a pretty tough and fast pace! I would probably keep up with them, but I wouldn't be able to continue for much longer than 400m... Personally and only my personal opinion
Children should be allowed to be children
It's wrong to condition a child so young to be a competitive person in life
Children should be allowed to grow first, learn first, before taking on such a stressful sport
Because it's not the sport that's stressing
It's the adults cutting the child down telling them they aren't going to amount to anything in life if they give up now
So I truly feel deep in my heart children should be children and not trophy discussions amongst the selfish parents

Pfftt, I’ve done that for a marathon (2:26:12 pb)
I’m kidding, that’s super impressive for 5 years old. I hadn’t even started comprehending that people compete at five, much less compete in running. Hopefully these boys end up being the best of the next generation, as unlikely as it is.

Plenty of much older teenagers and even adults that wouldn't run 1:30 for 400m. Good on the little champions for ripping in.

I remember when I was that age, and ran my first long distance race. I won all of the other races that were shorter distances, but I didn't know what to expect on this day.
I was a good runner, but never ran long distance before, and my coaches never told me how long I was going to be running.
I stayed behind the 1st and 2nd place runners through most of the race. But I was getting pissed because the finish line was no where in sight.
I just said fuck it, and started walking back to the finish line.
I was gone so long the older age group races started, and that was the end of my short journey to the Olympics!!!
The shit that pissed me off was the fact that no one came to look for me when we were running through a wooded area.
And I was the only black kid in that race.

But since then I never ran till highschool and now everyone else in XC talks about youth track and stuff and I know this is ultra-youth but I still wish I did stuff like this
