I was in Horseshoe bay the very moment this happened, too bad I was sound asleep even with those horns blaring. I can't believe I slept through those horns.
My husband shot this video from our deck on the hill above H. Bay. We have kids so our camcorder was always available. The Ferry came into the Bay and was on the horn for a while. When we looked outside, it was evident that the ferry was in trouble- and we started filming. As for the horn continuing on, well, that's a little dubbing from Global TV. The ferry stopped and so did the horn. My 4 year old started asking if the ferry was hurt and the horn sound was dubbed over her voice.
This video was most of what we recorded. We recorded it on a camcorder tape and I don't even know where it is now. Thanks for your interest tho. What a crazy day that was.
Hi I will forever remember this. I was working in the control tower at Tsawwassen . When this all happened . And we could hear on the FM . What was happening. And as Horseshoe Bay closed . They diverted all the traffic from Departure Bay to Tsawwassen . And as it was summer it was crazy.
This beast of a ferry is still in service today, I was on it last week going to Vancouver for a concert. Felt nice being on a boat that I knew wasn't going to stop for a damned thing if it didn't want to.
The Captain of the boat was constantly honking the horn, but because Horseshoe Bay is in a Mountainous Area, the noise was bouncing back and forth. You cant drop the anchor, because the boat was moving too fast, and then it would have most likely caused the ferry to spin into the dock, and wreak or injure people.
@@maeganbyerley there were people talking in the background so to silence that they played the horn on a loop, in reality it didn’t continue blowing after the crash
It was a very intense, and scarey moment.. when i heard brace for impact i knew i wasnt going to get to the city within the hour... then we hear the horn honking like crazy then mom knew it wasnt a joke.. at least no hull damage was done to the ferry, and the Oak bay remains in service :)

@supernobama2 actually this was only the crashing in the boats. The captian wasn't late on the horn. He actually started blasting the horn way sooner, my mom just missed this ferry by 1 car. I watched on the news as I was getting ready to fly to Edmonton a few days later.
Well I’m not exactly sure but the queen of Coquitlam was bought for 20 million dollars in 1974, and that would be worth much more today, sorry for being 10 years late
Nope. The cotter pin was for the governor assembly linkage. The pin was not installed correctly, fell out and caused an overspeed condition on the engine, triggering a shutdown.
Yeah, this was no way the Captain's fault, He lost power, therefore losing his breaks. He made a damn good choice of not raming the ferry terminal and made a hard as possible right into a softer landing. If he had hit the ferry terminal, he would have crushed some people on land and injure the people on the ferry. :d
i happened to see your comment on another video i watched, so you were on the queen of the north when it sank, and your sister was on this ship when it crashed???? wow what a coincidence!
No I think they blared the horn as a warning for people on shore. I have taken bcferries before and I know it wasn’t the alarm becuase the I have seen the alarm and it is a bell
The crash wasn't the captain's fault, he did pretty much all that one can do considering he lost power going into the dock. The fact that the crew wasn't able to drop the anchor was TOTALLY the captain's fault, no way that it takes 4 minutes to bring that ship to a stop in a marina. The anchors on that ship are a complete joke, it's a miracle that no one got killed that day.
The Canucks actually used a horn similar to one that would be in a bc ferry bc they were soknsered by bc ferries at the time so it actually literally is their goal horn
The lazy media love sensational headlines like a tiny pin causing the crash. The TSB report tells the truth: The engine halt was caused by the pin. The crash was caused by poor judgement on the bridge. It was wrong to try to restart an engine before determining the cause of shutdown. That could have damaged the engine. They also squandered the critical moments when the correct decision to drop anchor instead would have saved the day.
Actually there was a failure with the steering so how could it be his fault? He had no choice but to lay on the horn due to all the pleasure boats that are so close to the Ferry Terminal. Everyone was okay though
The captain was labelled a hero. The ferry dock itself is concrete, if the boat hit that there would have been significant damage, lots of injuries, and more than likely some deaths. The marina was a soft and slow stop which was the intention. It worked. Other than some damage to property, no injuries or deaths.
It’s like a plane emergency landing the captain will do what ever he can sometimes he has not choice but to land the plane on the highway. In this case what else was the captain supposed to do sail the ship into rocks and sink it or use another ferry as a cushion and veering into it causing the other ferry to sink?????? He had no choice but to do the best thing possible which was to crash land in a marina where death is unlikely
you should've listened to the radio transmission distress message from the queen of the north sinking, you could hear the alarm bells going off in the background, that sounded more like a cry for help.
He had that horn way before he even turned into the dock and that captain was probably shitting his pants when he found out his ferry isn't stopping anytime soon... Lol

Dude I don’t think a bike could even withstand the weight of one of those horns
Anyone near your car would go deaf
That would be a good emergency horn for a big coach bus
I find it amazing how this was all from a 1 1/2" cotter pin...Or so I heard...or remember...
I’m curious how that worked becuase the horn blasted two times but than after that it just made a humming type sound
It's kind of like an air horn can or so my husband says. Also I think what helped was the echoing off the mountains.

Why did the horn honk louder the second time?
Probably just the acoustics of the bay there as the ferry moved deeper into it.
