_I'm so proud of my little blue (yellow?) boy~_ One of my favorite things about WBaWC was the sheer amount of effort ZUN put into the game's sense of style. Much more than the older games, the new titles (HSiFS and WBaWC in particular) really go all-out on making the game feel like it has a motif. HSiFS was about nature and seasons, so had loads of pretty colors, while WBaWC is all about animals, so it has dark reddish colors and a more gritty appearance, all the way down to having its own, more "intense" HUD font. The other game's backgrounds and such felt a little more generic; they weren't bad, but didn't stand out from each other like these do, instead being consistent overall. I hope ZUN continues making each entry in the series feel more and more like its own thing, it's great. I myself have been one to categorize the story of Touhou into "arcs," and I agree with you that this might be the start of a new arc/focus in the overarching story. We'll have to wait until a few more games to totally confirm this though.
I personally think we're in the middle of an "outsiders"/"immigrants" arc, which began from ULiL. ULiL is about the Outside World, LoLK is about Moon and Hell, AoCF is about Dream World shenanigans, which continues to VD. And finally, HSiFS introduces Okina, whose job is to protect Gensokyo from outside threats. This game and 17.5 could be extensions to this arc.
Technically, we’re in the midst of the Hell Arc! With the new game featuring “Gouyoku” in the title, and is us heading into hell to track the source of oil, we’re likely going to deal with Toutetsu (who’s a Taotie - since Toutetsu is the Japanese reading, and both Saki and Yachie are named for their species). Further more, Visionary Fairies in Shrine recently had an entire section about Hell, and Hecatia and Okina butting heads over it. The Hell arc began in LoLK - we just can’t notice it until we read the side manga!
Honestly, I think the "outsiders" arc you're speaking of started with DDC, as Raiko channeled "outside world energy." Said arc _might_ have ended with VD, but it's too early to tell if WBaWC is starting a new arc or not.
hsifs has too many colours tho, i only got into touhou like this year and i can understand why people would think zun lost his touch before wbawc came out, not saying hsifs is a good game, its just a bit too funky djdkkdkd
For 9:51 there's actually a way to beat the spell by staying only at the bottom, maximizing damage but... of course, it requires some precise misdirection, and if you're playing as Marisa, precise movement thanks to her speed
On a side note, I really hope that the third leader of the Animal Realm doesn't just remain an offscreen character from now on. Toutetsu could make for a very interesting character, I feel.
Wait, who else got revealed? There's Yacchie and...... who else? EDIT: I'M A DUMBASS! I thought you were talking like, got portrait and stuffs... Learn to read AO, learn to read...

Going to put in the 300 IQ into making a guess they’re connected to Touhou 17.5. I mean Yuugi’s already making an appearance in the demo, so if there’s something going on in hell going to the animal realm wouldn’t be that much of a detour Edit: ah, i see someone else made the 300 IQ guess first

"Follow Me, Unafraid" can be done unfocused, especially with Marisa Eagle, but it's 50% chance you won't slam into a bullet, however it always makes Saki lose the most of her health during the fight before she speeds up. I've discovered it at the first time when I faced her.
"Not gonna lie, I would love to play a version of the game that didn't have ANY of that" The universal practice patch actually let's you disable beast spirits. Although on the downside it also disables lives, so you only have 2 lives to clear.
This was a pretty solid game to be honest, barring the visibility issues. Story was pretty different this time too, in a way I like and am looking forward to seeing more of. I expect more Yachie and Saki definitely, as they're leaders of major factions in an equally major realm (something something buddhism's six realms), but I also expect to see Toutetsu and the leader of the fourth unknown faction at some point too, maybe even in 17.5. Speaking of major named characters without an appearance: I wonder if we'll get to see Tenma ever.
Nice work! Haven't beat this extra stage yet; probably gonna save it until after I beat the rest of the main games I still haven't completed (14-16). Gonna go back and do all the extra stages from the games then, all in a row. I already beat 8's though, so at least I have one extra stage under my belt, haha. Saki doesn't look that bad, honestly. She doesn't seem to throw anything out that's too different from what you see in the main game. Her cooldowns look harder than her spells, though I haven't tried them so I can't say for sure. I really like her design and character, though. Seems fitting that she's the wolf spirit's boss, with how wild she is and how kinda nonchalant she is about the whole invasion deal. Music's pretty good, too. I definitely agree that this seems to be the beginning of a new arc. ZUN seems to be putting a lot more effort into the story this time around, what with the plot twists and background villains that we don't even meet in the game. He's probably trying to tie the stories, characters, and settings into each other more now, and I'm really excited to see how it plays out. Maybe I can dream and Konngara can finally make her triumphant return if we go back to hell!!
6:07 I wonder if we'll get the chance to meet Toutetsu one day or if she'll join the "major characters who never show up on screen" club where we can find Tsukuyomi, Chang'e and Tenma...
Honestly, I get the feeling Toutetsu's gonna show up in the next Touhou game, 17.5. If only cause the title of that game (Touhou Gouyoku Ibun ) seems to be named after her group (The Gouyoku Alliance)
I don't know how you can really make a good ending out of Hell going back to status quo. If it stops being a place of torture then the cosmos will be in bad shape, actually that's exactly the problem where a god snuck in to make things unusually comfy for humans and pissed off the beast spirits. Usually the enemy just calms down but here they just go back to old grudges. Interested to see when Saki Kurokoma shows up again, Eika from stage 1 is super cute and deserves all the love, and wouldn't mind some other characters from 3 and up.
First things first: YEEEHAW. And second: Miko, your horse is trying to take over the world, come and get her. Honestly, I find the stage and Kutaka harder than Saki herself. Bullet visibility is once again negative here >_> why red bullets on a red background? UFO Makai 2 Electric Bugaloo? Still, outside of a few select cards (I have yet to capture Black Pegasus Meteor Shot for example), Saki's attacks aren't bad, even if her non-spells come out wicked fast (basically sucker punching you for daring to go after spirit items). And when in doubt, Otter Roar is your best friend on all but her final card (which was a... pleasant surprise to find out, I must say). Oh and let me tell your her 2nd card is *extremely fun* to do as Reimu with Wolf Roar active. You can't see the lasers at all! For exploits, her Survival suffers from "Okina" where if you bomb or break a roar she gains a life bar and *can* be finished off to end the card earlier. And despite all her fanfare, her final card is surprisingly simple. Oh and I love that you mention she pulled the "Here, let me die but also kill you with a bullet while you were on your last life". That is such a classic. I agree with you. Overall 17 is on the easier side. I will call out some stuff being harder than average depending on your shot (like say, any Reimu vs Mayumi's cards). It's not friendly by any means and it has bullet visibility issues, especially on stage 4, but the patterns aren't as sadistic as some of the harder ones. Though resources are still scarce if you don't grab a few of the hidden spirits.
oh btw, because ZUN seems to be unable to get survival cards to not be buggy as hell, for some reason, if you bomb Saki's survival card, then you can just shoot her down (hell, you kinda have to unless you want to waste more resources since she also regains her hitbox)
