I like how this video showcases how he gets bored and defiant. It can be easy to only see the videos of him answering stuff correctly and think he’s some kind of oracle, instead of a toddler with wings

I have done a lot of training and I am teacher! You guys are doing well, I would recommend breaking pistachio up into smaller pieces so he stays Hungry and has more food drive. I would also encourage mapping out a plan for teaching sessions and back up plan. I know it’s not easy because Apollo has to be interested and in a talking mood for training to take place. Do you guys ever do recordings for new words like wrench so he hears it over and over? Great work, people have no idea how difficult training is when your also trying to film it, I am sure many great days never get filmed, but it’s fun if you love your bird.

Parrots have their own notions of what constitutes polite behavior. I have found they do not respond well to just shoving your hand under their feet to demand that they "step up". They are not dogs. Treating them with kindness and respect garners much better results. I also have trouble with people who expect these very intelligent beings to perform "tricks" on command.

It’s mostly for morale. If his model is always right, he becomes less motivated to work. He wants to feel like he’s “winning,” and that won’t work with a perfect rival.

I may be too late to this video and with your large following my comment may not be seen, but I have a question. I’ve been watching A LOT of bird content since falling in love with Apollo, including training videos. Training is successful in small time increments, needs consistency, good diet and sleep, and works with positive reinforcements consistently when correctly doing the “trick”. It appears Apollo has all of this. But one thing I’m wondering about, is the treat “value” and size. The higher the treat value, the more likely to get success. Obviously he loves pistachios lol. Not a problem. But they are really big nuts, and once he’s full, they don’t hold the same value. Is there a reason you don’t break them up into smaller treats so he’s not full before training is over? Then give him a whole nut as a jackpot to end on? Does he not respond to pieces as well? How many nuts does it take before he’s full?
