Just to put it all together:
    Thelonious Monk - piano
    Charlie Rouse - tenor
    Ben Riley - drums
    Larry Gales - bass
    Live in Norway, 1966

Yes Mr. Monk was truly a genius. Yet kudos to Charlie Rouse, Larry Giles and Ben Riley. All amazing players. This is a treasure.

Monk has such a sarcastic and aggressiv way of playing, but in a good way. He doesn't try to avoid the conflict he is searching for it. Thats why I like his music so much. It's pure Art!

I cottoned on to Monk in the late 1960's and early '70's, when all my contemporaries were already listening to rock. I took two of my friends to a concert of Monk's at Carnegie Hall (or Philharmonic Hall, I don't remember). They thought I was crazy but I was mesmerized. He has never been surpassed in my book.

Bwaaaaah! he crax me up! I studied his technique and voicing . When I listen today , I mean REALLY listen I DO hear the "outside" intervals he uses in his comping. In his second solo he is only changing the top note of the interval , then he does the same interval but moving up or down by whole or half steps. I love the point where he feels the need to leave his own rhythm section. Then listen to the bass, the only shred of harmony available , step in cause he has no other choice until Monk comes back from outer space. God bless our Monk.

I feel like only someone as mad and as ingenious as Monk could possibly understand this music on a deep level. He'll just do these strange little repetitive things with exotic chords, and it makes me wonder what's going through his head. I think he heard music in a profoundly different way than everybody else.

Hexatonic I mean where he just keeps playing the same right hand chord as an upper structure over seven or eight chords in his left hand. He just keeps harping on it, and somehow it reaches this weird catharsis.

You know, at certain times in both Monk's comping and his solos, I can hear a kind of pre hip hop. And I also thought that part of what made Charlie Rouse an ideal "foil" for Monk's compositions was that Rouse struck me as more of a R&B player who nevertheless knew jazz "language" and could therefore solo effectively. Especially as regards Thelonious' musical universe.

Obviously, there are many millions not like this. But, unfortunately, there are many, many millions more who are. And I"m not just talking about whether or not you dig Jazz or not.

Monk n'est pas un pianiste mais un batteur avec 10 baguettes,un style unique.

Yeah, he makes forgot that he uses a minimalist drum set, only a ride cymbal, no toms, and his solo is interesting

Amazingly, I heard Monk play live in the back room of a London pub circa 1960. No band, just Monk. The first thing he played was Blue Monk. The place was packed and went wild for his quirky music.

Honestly, I heard this music, from the day I was brought home. My father would put me to bed, and I’d think ,” what does that instrument look like,? For a white family, no one stopped us, yet, I was a percussionist from 7yrs, and guitarist fr 10 , singa, @22, my sis and I played acoustic blues, cotton picking, and artist music.
My brother, took to bass, and black🇲🇱music tradition, fr NOLA originators, to Chicago blues, to country and mid-western..lol.
I studied voices of the Phrasiologists💥 Well spoken music, aptly stated. No matter, where from, to notice it’s quality. 🇯🇲

The personal should be listed. They use to do that on the old records. They'd tell who the nusicians were, what year it was recorded and where it was done. The streaming services don't fo it either.

I mean really..., how many I-VII voicings did he splash on this take? And he carried them through scale wise. It's a perfect example , and instructional video, of jazz chordal harmony. He is purposely and repeatedly playing the same changes completely different every time. It's brilliant but obvious at the same time to the trained ear and schooled musician. Gotta love it...

No doubt his music is beyond full comprehension but his contributions are real to composition, the expansion of jazz language via his less-stable chords, his off-kilter rhythmic displacements/repetitions of fragments
