I agree: tretinoin is a really good way to go I'm currently on a very low does from Curology (.02%) and I hope to graduate to higher strengths very slowly. I use it for anti-aging after using 1% retinol or Differin, etc. for several years. They don't touch tretinoin.

I just came across your video. I’m 69 years old. When I was in my 30’s I was prescribed Retin-A for acne which peeled me like an onion but I was a young person then so I tolerated it. Occasionally now I experience a breakout from cosmetic products. I just ordered Differin for those occasional breakouts. Currently my face is perfectly clear and glowing using my usual Clinique 3 step for dry combination skin plus the moisture surge auto hydrator. Now and then I try something like a cosmetic retinol cream or a makeup remover balm which apparently does not agree with me at all. So Ive sworn off those types of skin care products as they cause breakouts, skin burning and redness. I’d have to say at this point in my life I have very few lines on my face and very happy with my aging process with the exception of cosmetic breakouts. As far as the Clinique three step, I’ve used it since I was in my 30’s and it works for me but it seems that every time I watch a You Tube video from someone who reviews a skin care product and I try it and ta da the next day my face has red blotches on my cheeks. What I’m wondering is am I the only person that has this happen to her at this age?
I was using Epiduo for years with good results but with age my skin became sensitive to benzoyl peroxide, so I switched to Differin instead. It did nothing for my acne, it didn't even do anything for my texture. It always just left my skin very very irritated and sore, yet I never saw any cosmetic benefits. Switched to 0.025 tretinoin and the difference has been insane! Thank you for this informative video! Please, could you share the scientific studies suggesting that retinaldehydes are less effective than tretinoin? I've been looking at this, and I never just take at face value what doctors say (bec. unfortunately, they're sometimes wrong, or some of what they say as "truth" is actually anecdotal and not actually the results of careful study, which with skin-altering agents often involves biopsying the untreated vs. the treated skin of each cohort member and examining them with special machines to see the actual skin structure); I look at the actual research. This is what I have found thus far: "In an open clinical trial, Ochando and colleagues (1994) studied the effect of 0.05% retinaldehyde in 32 female volunteers showing symptoms of mild to moderate photoaging. At the end of 4 months, considerable reduction in the surface roughness and coarse wrinkling was observed. Moreover, retinaldehyde treatment was associated with very few adverse effects. Subsequently, Creidi and colleagues (1998, 1999) conducted a randomized and vehicle-controlled clinical trial (n = 125) to compare the efficacy of 0.05% retinaldehyde with 0.05% retinoic acid for the treatment of photoaging. Optical profilometry studies on the volunteers indicated that both retinaldehyde and retinoic acid were equally effective in reducing wrinkles and skin roughness. However, retinoic acid resulted in higher incidences of local irritation than retinaldehyde thus negatively affecting patient compliance. In another study, Diridollou and colleagues (1999) evaluated the effect of 0.05% retinaldehyde versus vehicle in 40 patients showing symptoms of aging by ultrasound and rheological techniques. Compared with the control group, the retinaldehyde treated group showed a significant increase in epidermal thickness, as well as in cutaneous elasticity (p < 0.01). Similarly, retinaldehyde treatment tended to increase dermal thickness and reduce cutaneous stiffness and was very well tolerated by the patients." (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2699641/)
Here's another paper I just found, published in 2015. Great things to say about retinaldehyde! (Although, again, studies are limited on this form of vitamin A, and so some of the data is a repeat of the above, but some is new.) "Retinaldehyde, a naturally occurring precursor of retinoic acid and retinol metabolite, has the greatest evidence [Cherwyn: of OTC retinoid agents, that is] for reversal of skin aging, although the data remains somewhat limited [2•, 14••]. In a study of photodamaged skin, retinal 58 Curr Derm Rep (2015) 4:56-62 0.05 % was compared with retinoic acid 0.05 % and demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in wrinkles and roughness at week 18 with less irritation (Level I Evidence) [2•]. Other studies report morphologic changes from 0.5 % retinaldehyde being comparable to that of 0.1 % tretinoin with better tolerability (Level I Evidence) [14••]. Furthermore, because of its aldehyde functional group, retinaldehyde exerts direct receptor-independent biologic actions that may contribute to its effectiveness against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococus spp. at a concentration of 0.05 % in addition to its antioxidant effects (Level I Evidence) [7]. With oxidative stress reported to be a cause of photodamage and with a clear decline in endogenous antioxidant pathways with increased age, this antioxidant effect should not be understated. In one study, pretreatment with either 0.25 % topical alphatocopherol or topical retinaldehyde 0.05 % prevented the peroxidation of epidermal lipids as induced by topical menadione (vitamin K3). Due to its studied efficacy and favorable side effect profile, retinaldehyde is the most effective vitamin A compound for OTC use [7]." (sci-hub.se/link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13671-015-0102-9?shared-article-renderer) So, unless tretinoin has a similar "extra" positive antioxidant effect as retinaldehyde as described above, it might even be that retinaldehyde is a BETTER product to use, just for its overall effectiveness, than tretinoin! This isn't even considering the far less irritant effect it has upon the skin. I think I'm going to go with a retinaldehyde, but would still like to see your scientific support for your statements as I'm still in the status of investigating. I'm looking at this moment at possibly Eau Thermale Avène RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Cream, although there are a bunch of what look like good products out there using it and I'm looking at those, too. My skin became very irritated and painful with the use of tretinoin 0.025% even when diluted greatly with moisturizer and separated by several days, so I don't think this is my personal pathway...Although I have since read another moderating step that may be taken but still effective at the beginning is to wash the cream off after 30 minutes till skin adapts. This is a route I could take. I've just been scared off. I think I honestly ruined my skin barrier with the other attempt, and now it's been 2 years and my skin feels again healthy and strong and I'm just thinking through my next step very carefully...
@@cherwynpianobreathoflife4915 I agree with your comments. Everyone always claims hands down that tretinoin is far more effective but I read the same studies you did that seem to suggest retinaldehyde can be just as effective. I can't use tretinoin because it dries my eyes out no matter how much I avoid them and it makes my skin ridiculously photosensitive. I went back to using retinaldehyde which I can use with zero irritation (eye or otherwise) and no increased photosensitivity. I guess in another year or so I'll be able to tell if it's as effective as tretinoin, lol. Thanks for bringing up these studies! I hope you found a product that works for your skin.
I have had tretinoin but started to get lazy with it, but mask wearing had made my skin worse! My derm told me to use it every other day for 2-3 days and work up to nightly! I am seeing some purging but it's not as bad as I was anticipating because the first time I used it, 8 years ago it was BAD! I can say that it so worth it!! My skin was smooth and was getting small acne flare ups, but this year my skin took a turn so here I go again and I am hopeful that my skin will make a total 360 by the end of the year!
I’m now just starting Curology Tret at 0.005, 3 times a week M/W/F & tolerating it fine. Was doing 0.007 Tret nightly & skin turned bright red in a few weeks, so I’m going slow, slow, slow! Btw, Differin has been great at fading (within months, def NOT weeks) sun-spots on my forearms.
I’m starting a differin journey (never done this before) did you find that it took a while for you to see any improvements? I’m concerned on how much I’m cloying to be spending on this. Thank you! 😊

Tretinoin is a true life-saver and the only thing that helped my acne. Unfortunately you can't get it legally where I live so I have to order from shady online pharmacies, but it's so worth it. My skin has never looked better, pimples rarely pop up - and like you said, even when they do, they're gone in 1-2 days while before tret, I often had to wait for weeks and they left scars that could last for as long as two months (and I'm super white, so not even particularly prone to hyperpigmentation!). I really hope I'll always have access to it. My only issue with tret is that it makes my dry eye worse, but I'm trying to sort that out. I don't want to go back to what I looked and felt like.
I’m on week three , tretinion 0.05 and I haven’t experienced any dryness as of yet? Will my skin get drier? I dnt have acne just blemishes more use for anti aging skin texture. But my skin looks so shiny finishing just on week two!!!!! And feels more firm!
@@SS-tx3pv Honestly, I didn't really experience any dryness until the dose got bumped up to 0.1%. Even then, it went back to normalish after some time. The only reason I had to cut back to 0.025% because my dry eye was pretty bad and tret dried them out even more.
@@aquana I think I’m experiencing the same rn!! I woke up to my eye feeling a bit strained and dry ? Maybe it’s not the tret maybe it’s sinus allergies arghh!! And now my skins gone back to looking dull, given its only week 3 I’m expecting more of a purge! Will tretinion get rid of acne blemishes ! That’s my main worry and textured skin @abbeyyung
@@AbbeyYung It can definitely be the tret, if you google meibomian gland dysfunction and tret, you'll see. They're basically tiny oil glands on the inside of your eye lids and they produce oil that help with your tears evaporating too soon. Dry them out with the rest of your face and... well, it's not a good time, especially not for someone like me who already has dry eye due to an eye condition and the surgery I had to get for it. I've seen an eye doc about it and she recommended using an oil-based eye drop as a first step (most are water-based, but those don't help with evaporation if your eye is literally missing the oil layer on it). Try Cationorm or any US alternatives you can find, they're lipid-based and support the oil part of your tear barrier.
One thing to say about tretinoin is that it creeps out to parts of the skin where you havent applied it. I definitely didn’t apply this stuff to my ears or eyelids... 🤔
100%! It’s why when you get your eyebrows waxed you have to stop using your retinoid for about a week before... had my skin ripped off in high school from that 😅
@@projectme3334 yeah it’s been said to spread even to areas that you haven’t applied it too. That’s why some people create a barrier with their moisturiser or Vaseline. For example Vaseline under the eyes to prevent the tretinion from going too close to the eye.
I use 0.01% Tretinoin gel, which seems like such a small dose but after consistent use for 2 months, my breakouts are sooooo much better. My post inflammatory hyperpigmentation is fading too!
May I ask what moisturizer you found compatible with the gel?...I'm asking because every moisturizer I've tried so far with the Tretinoin gel would ball up into a stringy mess!
@@mikaylaknaebel2729 I have that moisturizer as well...maybe I wasn't applying it correctly...Do you apply the gel first on clean face and then the Vanicream? Btw, I really appreciate your feedback!⚘
@@honeybadgernasty yes, I double cleanse my face, put on the gel, and then put on the moisturizer. If I don’t wait for the gel to dry, the moisturizer doesn’t soak in well at first. I don’t have acne. I am extremely lucky. I didn’t start using retinol until this year. I just was ignorant. I have tried a couple and the really burned my skin badly! I tried the Ordinary 2% retinol with squelene and it doesn’t burn at all. I don’t know really effective it is but it all I can use and it fits in my budget. I can now use the fragrance free Neurtrogena one but I couldn’t prior to using the Ordinary.

What are your thoughts on Retin-A Micro (or the generic version of course)? I’ve been on Tretinoin cream 0.05% for almost a year now but I’ve been considering getting a prescription for the micro version due to the fact that it’s supposed to be less irritating and not photosensitive. Now, the only issue for me is the vehicle, I think you can only get a gel formula, and I do have normal to dry skin. Thank you for your videos!!
I would love to see the skin care I regret video for sure, loving how you share and keep me entertained and informed, I use tretinoin, here in Aus the brand name is Stieva A and it has helped so much with my hyper pigmentation and age lines, everyone has said how great my skin is looking and its only been about 2 months
Actually the top of the mountain would be Tazarotene as it's the strongest vitamin A derivative on the market, I love it, but it's sooooo strong. I've used it for 13 years but the beginning was.....wow.....rough. But if we are pretending like Tazarotene doesn't exist then yes, Tretinoin would be the peak lol.
I am 38 and have been acne prone since I was a teenager. Tretinoin has done the same for me. Breakouts heal quickly as opposed to taking weeks to heal.
So adapelene is stronger than retinol? I'm not sure what I should start my 16 year old for her acne. I'm thinking either Differin or CeraVe Retinol. What do you think?
Adapalene is a great place to start for acne. It definitely seems to be preferred by dermatologists over retinol for acne. If I use a BP wash I use it in the AM!
Hi , can retinol or retinol help fade old burn marks or old post inflammatory hyperpigmentation or melasma . Can retinoids bring up hyperpigmentation that your trying to fade from beneath the skin?and can retinol or retinoids improve pitted indentations scars ?
Hi Abbey. Thank you for the video Can you pls make one on how to start using tretinoin? I’m currently using 1% ordinary and would like to switch it but afraid to end up without an epidermis lol Thank you !
Does retina/tretnoin have propylene glycol in it? I’ve been using differin for 8 months now and it’s been a GOD SENT but I think I’m developing an allergy to PG. I would love to upgrade to tretnoin tbh
Have you got links to what peels to use when using tretinoin or if u even need to use peels . I used dermatica tretinoin as I'm from england x Thank you x
You definitely don’t need to! The ones I currently have are the ordinary AHA BHA & Lactic Acid. I have a review on these two. Not currently using due to irritation though!
I have hyperpigmentation from past acne scars , do u think tretinoin can make me hyperpigment more since its very irritating and literally any kind of irritation makes me ~hyperpigment~ ? Also, can I start at 21 even though I dont have wrinkles ? For now, I'm just dealing with acne scars, closed comedones and blackheads on my nose but no pustular acne ❤
So if I have acne and textured skin should I start with differin and then if that doesn’t work see a derm for the tret. (Sorry not sure how to spell) I use CeraVe retinol but it doesn’t seem very effective for acne. Help 🙏🏼
hi! i was prescribed tretinoin from my doctor idk if i should see a derm to see if i even need it! i’m only 16, and i feel maybe i am to young and my acne is not the worst but i do have some big pimples under the skin and textured skin, should i see a derm or am i okay to use tretinoin?
I just got some tretinoin should I only put it on the spots where I have acne or all over my face kinda nervous bc I do have sensitive skin. Should I use ceraves moisturizer cream on after? Also is it ok to use concealer the next day if needed on my spots? Thanks!!!
I apply a little under my eyes. Just what’s left over and then apply moisturiser 30 mins after. It all depends on you’re skin. Tolerance. There are a lot of people who use it under eyes not exactly right deep , but enough to get what you’re trying to improve. And there are a lot who say best to avoid tretinoin🖤✨. It all depends on ur skin tolerance and overall how ur skin reacts. My skin hasn’t really broken out as of yet although I’ve only jsur started.

(Although, again, studies are limited on this form of vitamin A, and so some of the data is a repeat of the above, but some is new.)
"Retinaldehyde, a naturally occurring precursor of retinoic acid and retinol metabolite, has the greatest evidence [Cherwyn: of OTC retinoid agents, that is] for reversal of skin aging, although the data remains somewhat limited [2•, 14••]. Due to its studied efficacy and favorable side effect profile, retinaldehyde is the most effective vitamin A compound for OTC use [7]."

So, unless tretinoin has a similar "extra" positive antioxidant effect as retinaldehyde as described above, it might even be that retinaldehyde is a BETTER product to use, just for its overall effectiveness, than tretinoin!
I am so with you on the mask breakouts! It’s been a battle
That’s amazing!
I’m starting a differin journey (never done this before) did you find that it took a while for you to see any improvements? I’m concerned on how much I’m cloying to be spending on this. Thank you! 😊
Ok but your hair in this.... goals😲
Thank you so much! Feeling sad because I just got a trim that turned into 4 inches 😫
@@AbbeyYung noooo the same thing happened to me!
Hey I’m surprised you’re so young cause of how informative your videos are (thought you might just look really young but with that wisdom.. )
Anyhow I do have malasma & am in my mid 40s … I will be starting tretinoin 0.01% can I also use my 15% niacinamide for malasma with it?
So amazing that it’s helped you so much! Okay I’m telling my mom about your dry eye comment stat... she’s been experiencing the same thing!
100%! It’s why when you get your eyebrows waxed you have to stop using your retinoid for about a week before... had my skin ripped off in high school from that 😅
@@AbbeyYung haha ive never had my eyebrows waxed but I appreciate the heads up! Seeing peeling on my ears was a strange moment.
My post inflammatory hyperpigmentation is fading too!
amazing!!
May I ask what moisturizer you found compatible with the gel?...I'm asking because every moisturizer I've tried so far with the Tretinoin gel would ball up into a stringy mess!
@@honeybadgernasty I use the vanicream moisturizing lotion (not cream). It’s not fancy by any means, but it’s always worked so well for me! Good luck!
I haven’t had any issues with pilling or balking up though. I do use a very small amount of the Tretinoin. Maybe pea-sized for my entire face. Not sure if that could be a difference?
Great Makeup. Obviously you're beautiful. I love the eye and lip colors.
WOW, you look so good in black!
You are very lucky! And better late than never 😊
im feeling so defeated, its been 2 months today since ive been prescribed tretinoin (with curology) and im still suffering with breakouts. my skin purged SO BAD about 2 weeks ago & im just now recovering from them but the spots where they were are still in the process of going away. But right now i feel so upset because im still getting breakouts & i hate it :(
I am so sorry to hear that 😢 the foods I eat have played such a huge role in my skin. Sugar is such a trigger. Something to consider looking into! Hope you see improvement soon 💘
Abbey-how long did you stay at each strength of Tret before increasing the dose? Thank you
My Tretinoin gel 0.025% was the same smell and consistency as a hand sanitizer...it was not compatible with ANY moisturizers I've tried! Did you have the same issue?
Such a helpful video! I am about to start tretinoin in .025% from the brand Apostrophe because I can't get Curology in my state! Looking forward to the next tips video!!!
So glad to help 😊 and YAY how exciting!
Need to do some more research on this topic! Potentially a great alternative for those that can’t tolerate Tretinoin right now
I would love to see the skin care I regret video for sure, loving how you share and keep me entertained and informed, I use tretinoin, here in Aus the brand name is Stieva A and it has helped so much with my hyper pigmentation and age lines, everyone has said how great my skin is looking and its only been about 2 months
I will definitely post that soon! That's amazing!
is retinaldehyde stronger than differin? is retinaldehyde better for acne than differin?
Tretinoin is not at the top of the mountain. Tazarotene is.
Was just sticking to the most commonly used/asked about options for this video 😊
I am 38 and have been acne prone since I was a teenager. Tretinoin has done the same for me. Breakouts heal quickly as opposed to taking weeks to heal.
Yes! It’s such a relief
So adapelene is stronger than retinol? I'm not sure what I should start my 16 year old for her acne. I'm thinking either Differin or CeraVe Retinol. What do you think?
Second question- do you use a benzoyl peroxide face wash the same nights you use your Curology? Thanks!!
Adapalene is a great place to start for acne. It definitely seems to be preferred by dermatologists over retinol for acne. If I use a BP wash I use it in the AM!
@@AbbeyYung Thank you!!
Can you make a video comparing Retinaldehyde (2nd most potent) vs bakuchiol for us with super sensitive skin
Hi , can retinol or retinol help fade old burn marks or old post inflammatory hyperpigmentation or melasma . Can retinoids bring up hyperpigmentation that your trying to fade from beneath the skin?and can retinol or retinoids improve pitted indentations scars ?
Ive beem using differin for 3 months . The purging almost gone but im suffered PIE and textured bumpy skin . :( Should i purchase vit c ?
Hi Abbey. Thank you for the video
Can you pls make one on how to start using tretinoin? I’m currently using 1% ordinary and would like to switch it but afraid to end up without an epidermis lol
Thank you !
Yes that is coming soon as a part 2 😊
Does retina/tretnoin have propylene glycol in it? I’ve been using differin for 8 months now and it’s been a GOD SENT but I think I’m developing an allergy to PG. I would love to upgrade to tretnoin tbh
Have you got links to what peels to use when using tretinoin or if u even need to use peels .
I used dermatica tretinoin as I'm from england x
Thank you x
You definitely don’t need to! The ones I currently have are the ordinary AHA BHA & Lactic Acid. I have a review on these two. Not currently using due to irritation though!
@@AbbeyYung thank u x
How to get tretinoin when I don't have acne ? Does anyone has any link, please.
I would be like to know what strength of tretinoin your mother is using??
I’m not sure actually! I want to say .05
Tretinoin helps fade hyperpigmentation! Derms definitely prescribe at 21
How can I use both adapelene 0.3% and tretinoin without having drying and burning
I wouldn’t recommend using both! Just stick to the tret- more effective
Hey Abbey ! I got this new sunscreen that says " safe for AC skin". Do you know what that means? It's a korean product
Hey Mari. I would guess is for Actinic Keratosis (maybe they mispelled it for AK 😞). I dont know but hope it helps you!
I have never seen this actually! I saw some guesses online that it may be for acne control or care but not sure? Hmmm
So if I have acne and textured skin should I start with differin and then if that doesn’t work see a derm for the tret. (Sorry not sure how to spell) I use CeraVe retinol but it doesn’t seem very effective for acne. Help 🙏🏼
Yes that is definitely what I’d recommend doing!
@@AbbeyYung great thanks so much for replying it means a lot, I watch all your videos ❤️
Do you use a pea size amount for the entire face ?
Yes!
hi! i was prescribed tretinoin from my doctor idk if i should see a derm to see if i even need it! i’m only 16, and i feel maybe i am to young and my acne is not the worst but i do have some big pimples under the skin and textured skin, should i see a derm or am i okay to use tretinoin?
i say doctor because i’m not sure if they would know as much as a derm would !
Do you know the strength difference between Avene RetrinAdahyde .1% strength versus tretinoin
Can differin help with texture and hyperpigmentation from acne??
yes!
Needed this 💕 Currently on differin gel for a month a half and still purging 😐 Hoping it gets better soon!
that purge phase is the worst... you're going to feel SO much better when it's done! 💕
@@AbbeyYung Thank you for the encouragement! Love your channel and videos 💛
I just got some tretinoin should I only put it on the spots where I have acne or all over my face kinda nervous bc I do have sensitive skin. Should I use ceraves moisturizer cream on after? Also is it ok to use concealer the next day if needed on my spots? Thanks!!!
Also I have acne around my mouth would it be ok to put there too? Thanks girl for the help!!
Pea sized amount to the entire face. Yes it’s okay to use concealer! Stay tuned for my part two video on application tips ♥️
Hey girly try and put moisturiser about 30 minutes before you put Tretinion just to be careful because it could cause irritation ect
Differin is so so great
agreed!
Will I still purge if I'm going to switch from differin to tret? I'm close to 3 months of using differin and the purge is really really bad
I did not! Hopefully you wont!
@@AbbeyYung thank youu!
Ratinoid best 😀
What if I can’t afford to see a dermatologist? Is there any other way to purchase tretinoin?
Not in the US. Only prescription. But your regular might prescribe.
You can purchase it from curology
Curology
@@lesleyhensley3982 oh okay yay thanks
Curology!
love my tretinoin lol
Thank god for the Tret
Could i use tretinoin around my eyes? (orbital bone)
never do that!
Best to avoid. The skin in this area is so delicate! I’d recommend a retinol eye cream or any retinol serum
