  • Trinity College Organ Series presents Vierne at 150: A Virtual Organ Festival
Though Louis Vierne (1870-1937) was a prolific composer and a virtuoso organist, his compelling and tragic life story has scarcely been told. The organist Christopher Houlihan, who became known as an authority on the music of Louis Vierne with marathon performances in 2012, brings the French composer's work to the fore in honor of the 150th anniversary of his birth.
Sponsored by Trinity College Chapel Music and the Department of Music.

I have only recently heard of MR Latry and that was from his biography book which I got from an organ recital. I think many budding musicians would be inspired by his story.

Mr. Houlihan, I am a HEEE-YUGE fan of Olivier Latry. Currently a community college student planning to transfer to a university, I dream of being an organist like him! I had the blessing of seeing Mr. Latry years ago when I was eighteen. I have always been smitten with him. It feels so freakin' good to hear his voice! I think he sounds a little like a pipe organ himself -- the timbre of his voice reminds me of the Cromorne reed stop! (hehe, tell him I said that).

I've just had the good fortune to stumble across this interview and have to say, 'thank you so much!' I have a particular passion for Vierne's music and the life and emotion that lay behind it so it is especially wonderful to hear Olivier share his memories of what Litaize, Langlais, etc told him about their encounters with the great man. It all helps bring Vierne even more to life. I could listen for hours to more such stories!

Thank you so much for having this interview and posting it!! I was curious to know the status of the choir organ and didn't hear any discussion of that during the interview. Any idea the fate of that instrument??

The choir organ has been we can say "destroyed" not by the fire but by so, so (so...) much water because of firemen trying fire not to grow at that place (where are the "stalles" from XVe century). It was like rain in a storm. I have no information about what will be done to re-build it. It was a wonderfull instrument (almost by Boisseau), completely adapted to what it as to do... Really, the organ is like a "personnage" in the cathedral. Sorry for my English, I'm from Paris...

@@GuillaumeDeslandres Thank you so much for giving us this information. We all hope they can restore the smaller choir organ at Notre Dame!

First piece to play when she's finished: perhaps Apparition de l'église éternelle?
