Doo Wop was the answer to the Big Band era with its big horn sections that preceded. The kids took to the city street corners (Nice echos) singing and the backing vocals are representative of the horns used in Big Bands. This classic demonstrates that perfectly.

Back in 1956/1957 time frame we'd go to to the local soda shop to gawk at the teenagers and listen to the juke box. We didn't have any money, so we had to listen to what they played. I'm still amazed at how well they ignored us little kids...we used to literally stare at the teenagers trying to figure out what was going. Boys and girls sitting together. Who in their right mind would do that???

Old boomer here (born 1949). The doo-wop sound was one of the "flavors" that contributed to the birth of rock and roll. I was lucky my parents played the radio and the car radio when we were kids. I got exposed to this and many other early artists that started "our" music. You should advance your time travel a few more years to the mid 1960's now to the DEEEETROIT Sound of Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. Start with Devil in a Blue Dress/Good Golly Miss Molly and then proceed to Sock It To Me Baby, etc. This was the era of Louie, Louie, early Beach Boys surf music, the Safari's Wipeout, the Four Seasons, and so much more; some of which you've already discovered. (I watch your channel a lot/subscriber). This was the sound just as the British Invasion and Motown arrived. Everyday something new hit the radio play back then and we kids kept the record companies in business. Not to leave out the Dick Clark's influence on rock - he made rock and roll mainstream. I could on and on, but others have given you a taste. Your grandparents will vouch for this and add even more. Peace and Love - Dan Peake

Del-Vikings was a name came up with by Clarence Quick, one of the founders of the group. There are a few stories as to where the name originated. Members of the group had read about the Vikings. They were fans of a local basketball team called the Vikings. Members of the band read books published by Viking Press. So, perhaps all the reasons are true. The Del might have been added just to make the name interesting.
The group members were all in the US Air Force. When some original members were deployed, David Lerchey, the White man in the picture, was one of the new member, who is on Come Go With Me, and there other big hit, Whispering Bells. Come Go with Me has appeared in several movies, including Stand By Me and American Graffiti, where I heard it. Whispering Bells appeared in Stand. By Me as well.
Both songs reached the Top #10 on the music charts, with Come Go With Me peaking at #5.

"Whispering Bells" by the Del Vikings is a great follow up by them. BTW: The members of the group were all airmen stationed at a Pittsburgh Base in 1955.The Vikings was the name of a basketball-playing social club in Brooklyn that member Clarence Quick belonged to. When he put Del (meaning “the”) in front of Vikings he unintentionally created a redundant moniker - like saying “the The Vikings”. They won a local talent contest with the song "Come Go With Me".

As to their name, this is from wiki: "The band's name was created by Clarence Quick. Some sources say that band members had read about Vikings[with the prefix "Del" being "added to give the group name an air of mystery." Another suggestion is that Clarence Quick had known of a basketball team in Brooklyn, New York, called the Vikings and had suggested the name. The name may also have originated from the popular Viking Press, publisher of paperbacks that group members liked to read"
Also, when they formed all the members were members of the US Military and occasionally members would be transferred and have to leave the group.

Hi guys. The band originally was formed by guys who were all in the air force and stationed in Pittsburgh. They were afraid that guys would get transferred and lost to the group. It happened. Two of the guys got transferred to Germany and were replaced by 2 new ones including their 1st white member. There are a few stories about where the group name came from. One is that a couple of the guys had been reading about Vikings and thought that adding the Del would make it more interesting and mysterious. Another was that one of the guys knew of a basketball team from NYC that was called the Vikings. Finally it's possible that it was inspired by Viking Press a publishing company that printed a lot of paperback books which several of the guys enjoyed reading.

They said the only thing wrong with it was the songs were from a spread of years... and most stations were true "top 40" stations and they wouldn't be playing a 5 year old song, followed by a 3 year old song, then a new one, then another 'old' song.
We're used to stations that constantly play everything.

My reference for this song is from Saved by The Bell. Use to do some backup Doo Wop with my music teacher and his old group in school and this was one of the songs they did. A very catchy tune. Solid reaction Squad.

I love the 50s too. Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis, and the Platters are some of my favorites. Don't forget some of the great singers from the movies too, like Paul Robeson - Show Boat (1936), Lena Horne - Stormy Weather (1943), and Judy Garland - ANY of her movies. Just some fun suggestions. : )

YES! Was about 13 and lived in a huge apartment building; one day there was a 50’s Doo-Wop compilation album in the garbage; I took it and kept it; this song was my favorite one ❤

A doo-wop masterpiece. One of the first integrated groups, I read somewhere they met while in the Air Force. (I'm open to correction!)
I love those bass singers from the doo-wop era. Another great song was "Since I Don't have You' by The Skyliners (and also a great cover version by Don McLean).

You guys should delve back into the 40's to see what led to the great music of the 50's. A lot of the music was upbeat and fun to help folks forget about the wars that were going on.

The post-war blues helped push music into rock 'n' roll. So many wonderful changes occurred during this era.
This song was one of my son's favorites when he was little. We went to a 50s diner every week with my dad before cruise night events. My son sang along with all the songs that played on the jukebox. But "Come, Go With Me" was the only song that he wanted to hear repeatedly. My dad got him a CD of 50s music with this song so he could hear it any time he wanted. And my boy did. He still does. Says it reminds him of all the good times out with Papa. ❤

I love 1950s and early-1960s doo-wop vocal groups. "Come Go with Me" is one of my favorites from that genre. Some other favorites that come to mind are:
"Why Do Fools Fall in Love" by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers
"I Only Have Eyes for You" by The Flamingos
"Sh-Boom" by The Chords or The Crew-Cuts
    "Trickle Trickle" by The Videos
"That's the Way It Goes" by The Harptones
    "Yakety Yak" by The Coasters
"Do You Love Me" by The Contours
"Get a Job" by The Silhouettes
"My True Story" by The Jive Five
All worth a listen if you haven't heard these songs before.
Honorable mention: "This Boy" by The Beatles. Although The Beatles weren't a doo-wop vocal group, their early sound was heavily influenced by American popular music, which included doo-wop. This particular song is very much in the style of doo-wop music, and was inspired by songs, such as "I've Been Good to You" by The Miracles, "You Don't Understand Me" by Bobby Freeman, and "To Know Him Is to Love Him" by The Teddy Bears.

Great reaction to a Doo Wop fave! There are several stories about the name, 1) That it referenced historical Norsemen with the 'Del-' being added for a sense of mystery. 2) That it was borrowed from a sports team name. 3) That it was based on Viking Press who published novels that the band members liked. The band was interracial, at least in part, because they were all military and had to make replacements when guys would get stationed elsewhere.

Doo-wop so beautiful and distinctive. I try to imagine what it must have been like to be a teenager back then. My mother said they often had dances in people's garages on the weekends, and every day during lunch at school! When you combine such specific and fun music with youth, it must be amazing to remember exactly the feelings of the time through this music.

Fun fact, groups in the 50’s and 60’s actually copyrighted their do-wop sounds so that no other group could copy theirs! Each group came up with their own sounds for each song!

I worked in copyrights and you cannot copyright a style of music, including do-wop. You can copyright the song. Every groups were trying to be different so they were distinctive from others.

The Del Vikings consisted of active duty Airmen from the US Air Force. One of its singers, Gus Backus, was transferred to Wiesbaden Air Base in Germany in 1957, before "Come Go With Me" was released. Backus became a huge star in Germany in the 1960s singing in German and starring in German-language movies.

I saw Haircut 100 open up for Howard Jones & ABC Wednesday night, they were FANTASTIC!!
You'll be seeing them on Saturday.
Still time to react to their Hit song "Love Plus One!" C'mon you guys you're missing OUT!!
Also on a side note: Howard Jones's bass player is Nick Beggs he was in the band Kajagoogoo.
Remember when you reacted to their song "Too shy, shy?"
Well, guess what? Howard Jones COVERS that song!
What a special treat for all his fans!
    ABC was BRILLIANT as usual.
Get ready for a fantastic concert.

Wish I could answer your question about their name but I have no idea where it came from. Never thought to ask then. Thanks so much for reacting to the music of my youth AND appreciate it. I’m hearing my music through new eyes and ears.

I knew that sax solo was coming and Amber was going to love it. 😆
This is on the American Graffiti soundtrack, which is filled with (except for one song) '62 and before classics from start to finish ("Where were you in sixty-two?"). I got it on 8 track when it first came out, then a double album set (I think I still have the 8 track and double LP stashed away somewhere), a few times on cassette, and now on digital. I still dip into it every once in a while, not to mention it makes a great road trip collection.
