- www.DickProenneke.com - Dick Proenneke's simple, yet profound account of his 30 year adventure in the remote Alaska wilderness continues in this sequel to "Alone in the Wilderness". Watch through his eyes as he continues to document with his 16mm wind-up Bolex camera, capturing his own amazing craftsmanship, the stunning Alaskan wildlife and scenery and even a visit from his brother Ray (Jake). His epic journey takes you on a vacation away from the hustle and bustle of today's fast-paced society, and is a true breath of fresh air.
Bob Swerer has taken the best footage from Dick's films and he has created 4 videos about Dick, "Alone in the Wilderness", "Alaska, Silence and Solitude" "The Frozen North", and now "Alone in the Wilderness part II". You can purchase all of them in DVD format from the www.DickProenneke.com website.
As I saw him sitting near the fire , in his snug little cabin , while it snowed outside , I understood that the best moments a man can have , which tie him to the fabric of the universe , are alone.

Dick was better with hand tools than anyone I've ever seen in person or in film. His wooden door hinges are a good example of his genius.
he worked for some 25 years as a millwright, I believe. He had a large skill set before he did this, apart from having a sharp and creative mind.
And still had all his finger's
@@Conn30Mtenor definitely had a very high IQ for this kind of work and in general. He understood more than just the physical part of it.
That's what I commented elsewhere... the skill set. The tree stump hinges. I saw this 25 yrs ago at least and truly affected me.
I could not do that but I can still learn today... in a local area. Maine, I like the Atlantic and it's quiet in ME. Can't escape taxes yet.. 😢😅
"I enjoy working for my heat. It seems to make my food taste better" Dick Proenneke.
- What a legend!
It makes sense. You work up an appetite.
Water tastes better when your really thirsty.
Everything is better when you work yourself to exhaustion.
Legend
Anyone who just hikes knows this.
His original plans as to winter over one year. Build the cabin, spend the winter then leave in the spring. He stayed 35 years.
I can't blame him, one bit
instaBlaster...
Not exactly. He was back and forth between there and california for awhile. There are about 4 books of his journals now published by the national park service. You should check them out
He actually stayed 30 years and only stayed 19 of those winters there. The other 11 winters he spent in town or with family in California. He also had visitors alot throughout the year.
Doing almost thé same thing.
7 years in and not ready to leave.
i lived up in Alaska for 8 years. I loved it there so much. Life was like heaven. Then I broke my leg during an accident. My family wanted me to come back so I did. once you go back to civilization you feel like such an outcast. But every single day I think about my home. Every single day I want to go back. Once you live out in the wild that long, nothing is ever the same.
Uncut Indoors what part did you live in?
Uncut Indoors i
I've been up in Alaska now for 20 years. Up in the Copper River Valley. Its where my heart is for sure. Every time I take a trip to "civilization" I feel like a fish out of water.
Hahahahahah! I bet you lived in Wasilla.
Didn't lived in Alaska but in a little ranch down in TX hot weather in Summer, sharp cold in Winter. Closest town was about 4 hr drive. I had a great view of the plains and the mountains. I was alone just in touch with my creator. Woke up at 4 am went to sleep at 9 pm. Hard work was a pleassure. Then got married and the wife wanted to live in a big, oily, dirty and crowded city.
This gentleman define manhood. He braves the wilderness and nature. He made everything with his skills and talent. I salute to him.
"defines"
Just finished his book, "One Man's Wilderness." I feel like I need a nice meal of sourdough biscuits, ram stew and some navy beans.
I had never even heard of Dick Proenneke or his life until a friend of mine mentioned his book two months ago. Now, after reading the book I see I now have a wide range of videos to explore and learn more about this humble, adventurous human being.
RIP Mr. Proenneke. Those 16 months have inspired millions of us whom you never knew, and we did not know you; but - now we do - and we are better off for it.
"Until Another Spring"...
i just placed an order through that site.. I'm curious if its still alive.. only$38 after everything so no big loss if it doesnt lol
@@kohdetimetraveler did they send it?
@@connorcardin4276 yes they did, and it was cheaper than I thought too... amazon people are trying to rip ppl off too !
Now this is true freedom that so many of us won't get to touch.
pRoenneke hasn't lived there for free either I'd bet. If nothing else, he probably had at least some weird surveillance / report responsibility. Also, if every second idiot who watched three episodes of Bear Grylls, would try to live off-grid, nature would be wasted even more than it is now.
***** depends on the country / state etc. Normally if you own the land you can do it. As far as I know Alaska is no difference. Buy some forest, the you can play Bear Grillz all day long..
No. if its what you want and desire it is not a bad thing nor is it a lack of freedom. On the contrary, it is Freedom of choice that allows one to do this type of living. The simple necessities are needs yes but not a weight.
You can still get away with it in Alaska or Siberia for example. There's still apparently ONE couple that lives completely of the land in Alaska, check out Vice's doc on it. They look happy. But they're acing the survival part. Have three places they move between to not drain too much resources in an area etc. Traps, hunting and gathering expert level, though the woman is mostly home.
In the United States, EVERY square fucking inch of soil is claimed by someone...Not necessarily defended by someone, but claimed by someone, business, person, or government or maybe indian tribe.
I love watching this every winter. it's therapeutic. So relaxing. So peaceful. He's amazing!
I love it too. What I also love is the fact that this is not 1080p or 720p and all this HD stuff. This has such a better atmosphere. Just because of his videos, I bought an old camera from 1968. Filmed my garden and in the forest. Looks amazing my neighbors said.
Same
Trish, I wish to meet a women like you someday
yes ..it truely is..
Trish Burr me to I have seen this many times and it is so relaxing
Ive watched the whole part 1 & 2 and extras OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!! This is mesmerizing and soothing to the soul. Never gets old. Thank you Dick, you were a GIANT amongst men! RIP! You deserve it!
PBS plays this documentary every year, and I watch it every year, this man's a very loving, gentle innovator!
Dick Proenneke was such a legend of self-reliant living. The very first survivor man. His ability to document his experience in both journal writing and film is unmatched. Whoever produced these films did a great job too. They inspire the imagination.
Jeremy Sanders he was hardly the first!
Bill Gillett . who was the first to document this type of living on film???
Not "self reliant" He had supplies brought by float plane, that's why he survived unlike the clueless ideological morons who tried to live off the land.
If you want an idea what that was like read "people of the deer" by Farly Mowat.
@40intrek there is always naysayers. Its the reason people like to get away from the world and negative people. The man took a 60 70 year old tec camcorder out into the wilderness and used it like it was a go pro. Unbelievable feat
Very inspirational.
I took the tropical route, but Dick Prenokke was my inspiration to a similar life. I even started at the same age.
So glad he took the time to film his life.
TheNorthwoodsman1 you’re right👍
Is this video footage authentic
It's not video. Was filmed with film in a camera. Absolutely 100% real.
Yes. He's got a genuinely beautiful charisma that really comes through. Mary is a lucky woman.
@@alpha2zulu854 You do understand that cameras with film was how we recorded video for decades, right? I don't think you understand what "video" means.
I have so much respect for this man to live out his dream and sharing it with others to inspire for generations to come!
This guy is an inspiration. So true to nature and truthful to himself.Simply awesome.
99% of us couldn't even carry Dick Proenneke's jock. We only wish we had his skill, know how, survival instincts, and shear courage to go it alone.. and live to tell about it. Can't wait for Mother Nature to get out her big broom and clear out all the dead wood on this planet. People like Proenneke will be the last ones standing when the rest of us are fighting over dwindling supplies of food, clean water, and energy resources.

Great Idea!
Yeah they should!!👏👌👍
Fantastic idea! Is there any way to contact them with this idea?
Cameron Lyall Not sure. I guess it's up to the owner of the videos to submit the videos to Netflix and get paid.
Roy Long Yeah, people need to this, it is great.
His voice is so soothing. I wish I was born thousands of years back in those wilderness
Sophomore year of high school, my english teacher showed my class this dvd due to the fact we were learning about men surviving in harsh places.... This video has since then changed my life, I've become appreciated of the things many people take for granted, from the clothes on their back to plumbing and food on the table. And most importantly nature, how man has taken all it can from mother nature never giving back...times will change i can promise you that.
Funny, about the time you wrote this my chemistry teacher in hs showed it to me. We had a wilderness adventures class as well and he showed how comforting it can be out in nature.
"Nature provides so many things, if one has the eye to notice them."
I like that quote too!
I have re read this book and watched this story over and over. It is a classic. Warms my heart every time. I love it. Thanks for sharing.
Dennis Kuenze what is the name of the book? and is it more of an autobiography or a guide to making a cabin?
What's the books name?
It is his daily log and a has a some stories and thoughts . It is a companion to the video. I bought it through PBS. Barnes and Knoble carries it also.
Thanks
I've seen this documentary first time a few years ago, one of my favorites, so tranquil and poetic, just seized your heart.
OK
I had an uncle who lived in Alaska five or six months out of the year, he an his wife lived out of their small camper on the back of his pickup truck, not much room so everything they owned, had a sourpuss, he finally died up their in 1982, in fishing accident on a small crab boat, as it sunk, he died doing what he loved to do, and where he loved to be.
rest in peace experiencing most could not began to imagine I wish I could ask, what is most satisfying of this lifestyle
What happen to his wife?
He died doing what he loved to do , pretending he could swim .
sounds like a shitty way to die
If his wife was with him I'd guess suicide
This voice is incredibly relaxing.
That’s not his voice . He filmed with no voice and a narrative was added after in editing . There are recordings of his voice , but not in this series .
Dick Proenneke has my utmost respect. To be able to devote that amount of time and energy, single handed, to that job takes guts and fortitude that most people these days just don't have. We've become soft, pampered and are now without the basic skills which would allow us to survive in the same environment for any length of time. As much as the things you do see in the video, are the ones you don't. An outstanding man - there should be more like him and I wish I were one of them.
How good is this guy with wood. He did this with an axe.
It is so relaxing watching a man build something with wood with his own hands and energy. The Earth provide all our needs if we only have the know how.
This man inspired me so much. He's been a hero of mine for years. Funny how you can miss someone so much, that you never even had a conversation with.... Anyhow, rest in peace "ole buddy".
12 years you left this comment, I hope this message finds you well✌️🇮🇪☘️
The Bob Ross of survival. A legend, his voice is mesmerizing too.
Although I love the voice also it's not his voice. It's the producer readings Dick's diary.
That my friends is a REAL MAN!!!
Everytime i watch this video i long for this kinda of life away from the pressures of life just want to be free alone this really lived a life that most of us can only imagine will never get tired od watching Mr proenneke RIP sir
I feel an uncanny sense of yearning to do the same. I can't imagine how alive he must have felt.
So do I. Then I realize I'd either freeze to death or be eaten by a bear within a week!!!!! :)
@@dvvalant a realist in the midst! 👍👍
I live in a place which has a winter season. Nothing like Alaska, but pretty crappy for a few months between December and March. I keep up my routine of outdoor exercise all year. I'll run 10km twice a week (it's slow going) and I chop wood for my neighbor.
Being active (and even a tiny bit productive) sets the mind, body, and soul at ease. It's very freeing, and life- affirming.
Awesome old school grainy footage and film colour. Love it.
I've watched this guy make this spoon about a dozen times.
Just head of this guy (Dick Proenneke) recently. He's my new super hero.
his woodworking skills were spectacular
Everyone singing his praises and reflecting on this wonderful life. Nobody reflecting on the social disabilities or stress it takes to live this way.
It would not be easy that's for sure.
I think they made his homestead a National Historic Site.
Vlogging before there was vlogging. I really love old documentaries, people knew what mattered. Life. Just life, plain and simple.
Whenever I camp and find evidence of animals and then see them in the bush in Australia, I can't stop thinking about them and their habits and patterns. It's like you automatically want to know what they are up to and how many times they come near your camp. I've seen so far in 2 visits to my new camp, 9 ft Wedge-tail Eagle, large fox, large wild pigeons, grass pigeons, rabbit warren, feral pig family, magpies. I want to plant some spruce trees after seeing this, looks like good wood.
whomever added in the sound to the video did a magnificent job.
Thank you ! You have a good ear ! we appreciate your kind words. It was a lot of work but we enjoyed every minute .
This guy's amazing.
What a hell of a man hard working and had the utmost respect for nature and his surroundings very enjoyable to watch.
In our modern world there is no better representation of what we were and what we should be.
Like he says, "there's no reason to rush it or go off half cocked... theres plenty of time out here" in my daily life I cant seem to get anything done. Theres not enough time in a day and I've become tired of it. The winter months crush my soul, I leave for work and its dark out. I get home a couple hours after dark has fallen again and all I have time for is dinner and shower. 5 hours later im up for the next day. This has been the way of things for almost 20 years. We cant even homestead in Alaska like Dick did... we are losing everything sacred to us. I can dream about it and see a video of ol Dick carving things because he has a day to fill.
Wow at 3:10 that beaver was so damn cute it made my head explode.
*edit* Why is the atmosphere of this video so relaxing? Is it the narrators voice? The forest sounds? Hmm
Wow! What a hard worker. I wish I had your drive.
I'm miss the country living.
This guy is a real carpenter, watch part one and see. He builds his house completely by him self. Hes great and I wish I had his talent.
I have this video It is awesome I love it I rate it 5*'s .
I am looking forward to purchasing more of the series.
Thank You Bob Swerer
This guy is a tough one....last of a dying breed....I remember watching this as a child..and thinking I would enjoy to ....and I say " try this".....I have up most respect for this truly man.
3:11 Dick Proenneke warned us that winter is coming.
"but abuse one, it will... open your foot like an overcooked sausage" delivered with the calm of a seasoned woodsman... cant get any better than that
Reminds me of my childhood when things was about respecting Nature! When PBS was educational and National Geographic.
watching this show 4 times a week, Greeting from a small town north of iraq where iss burns everything
Proenneke was a remarkable individual.Resourceful ,creative and had fantastic skills. The only other person I found who come close to him was Frank "Lefty"Rosenthal, the man who the movie Casino was about, played by Robert Deniro.
It's so sad that there are no more pioneers like Dick anymore. He was one in every true sense of the word and his like will probably never be seen again. Such a sad loss !
How does one carve a wooden spoon?
*See the spoon already in the wood*
*Carve away all the parts that are not spoon*
Don't mistake your fingers for not spoon.
Ha! Yes, that is an important part of the procedure ... especially in the bush.
Chopping with that axe, man was he close to his fingers! *Surety!*
Craig Brownell Check out Paul Seller's RUclips video on how to carve out a spoon.
Craig Brownell there is no spoon
Then it also must be the case that there is no *not spoon.*
I read 2 of Dick's books on his Alaska adventures. They were so charming and gave me such a feeling of peace when I read them, both several times! I still call the squirrels in my back yard "Sammie's" like Dick. I too discovered this man on PBS one evening about 8 years ago. Fascinating man.
The essence of a true man. Curious, eager, self reliant skill productive efficient. Quiet. Industrious. Essence of a modern goof ball total opposite.
We don't tend to appreciate nature like this anymore...if our current generation just had 1/10th of the heart of this man, I reckon things would be a lot better.
“When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” -John Muir.
Id rather buy a spoon for a dollar instead of spending hours making one, but damn I love and respect what a dude like this does. I remember watching this years ago on PBS.
+MrSkeezymak A spoon can be made in around 20 minutes , its that extra time you put in that makes the spoon that much better. Id imagine if you tried making one you would prefer making them over buying them. Its almost theraputic. Then again everybody is different.
Is this the whole this or is the DVD longer
+hallnoats4ever There are 3 dvds. Each one is an hour long
Sitting beside a chimney fire in a cozy log cabin in the middle of snow storm, there is no greater moment of tranquility.
Talented with an ax. But I did spend a bit of time counting his fingers.....
LOLLOLLOLLOLLOL, Me too
I admire the life that this man lived. He got answers to questions that few men dare to ask themselves, questions that can only be answered by going out on a limb and putting oneself in the thick of things. After the shitshow that was 2020 I have found solace in Dick's videos. This kind of living isn't easy but it's worth it
"I enjoy working for my heat. It seems to make my food taste better."
This is what I remember of the original film put on PBS in Seattle. Every year they’d come asking for money, using Dick’s movies as attraction pieces. I know they worked because, year after year, they’d program them into the fund drive. It was such a pleasure to view these films about a resolute and polite human being. If the cutters had left the films alone we’d all be better off, and more easily see the qualities Dick Proenneke possessed.
It's the end of October now, and the good weather is still holding. But all signs tell me that....
WINTER IS COMING.
almost
I'm grateful that he recorded his life, and work here in Alaska. It shows a real can do attitude.
Makes everything I've done with my life look pretty small.
making that spoon was pretty cool. He made building that cabin look so easy!
There is a plenty of time here.....
So thankful I stumbled across this series. Wish I could have lived like he did. Such a simpler time.
There are two more videos that feature Dick Proenneke other than Part 1 and Part 2 of "ALONE IN THE WILDERNESS" watch on RUclips "ALASKA SILENCE & SOLITUDE" & "THE FROZEN NORTH"
It's one thing to think about doing and talk about doing but to actually do it and for so long and starting at his age is truly an amazing achievement.
Any man that can carve a spoon out of a log with an axe has me shaken, but not stirred.
There is a calmness in my soul when I watch his quiet, but captivating life. He knew what he wanted and did it. His way.
Although Alone, So Many That Would Have Accompany Him. ( I sure have would )

I have watched those alaskan tv shows but watching Dick it just seems sooo peaceful
Not trying to offend anyone, but back in these times, men acted like men. Nowadays, skinny jeans and hairstyles are all too common, and finding someone like Dick, is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Dick was the definition of man. Hardworking, forgiving, persistent, peaceful and content and appreciative of the small things. Even though something like this in todays world is next to impossible, I aspire to look at life the way he did, and I think I can speak for everyone here when I say that this is a kind of life that has been thought about more than once, and has left us wanting out of the rat race that is todays controlled and hectic world. Great video by the way. It makes me take out the full version everytime, and watch it with my family
Yeah, the tv and computer generation, and they need lots of tattoos... I prefer a scar, which can tell a story! ;-)
Very well said. Buncha pussies now
I remember watching this year's ago and I didn't even watch the whole thing but I remember it giving me such a peaceful and relaxing feeling 😊😊😊😊😊
The American Indian's called it paradise, the European's that came here called it wilderness.
Its a big difference if you have to live there youre whole live without any support or if you have the option to get a plane fly you into a hospital if something wents horrible wrong. Living in the wilderness is great. I do that a lot mylelf in short trips. But its only great when you know that you can go back to a modern civilisation with medical supplies.
And expensive scotch .
I envy his amazing skill. His patience.

Plenty of time, ya as long as you can survive that day... I love him. This man stuns me. I have known for 20 yrs but to re visit is tough.
I wish I could do that. Maybe I can but in Maine could still drive truck for a bit get some land...
Just make a spoon. Dick looks at a forest and says ...yup plenty of spoons here...as well as many useful items.
I'm 57 but I like saying GOAT... Legend!! This is 2024... like a time capsule in here.
What grade did this guy get in woodworking class?
He taught it
All self taught. Proenneke was not a carpenter, he was a diesel mechanic.
Dick was a carpenter in the Navy.

i bet you couldn't do this now with government regulations and land rights
I think I have read where he "homesteaded" the spot, back in the early 60's, where the cabin sits. I think Alaska allowed that back in the 60's. I may be full of $hit but I think I read that.
