NEVER DUFF A CHIP AGAIN - SIMPLE GOLF DRILL

  • Опубликовано: 13 сен 2019
  • There is nothing more frustrating than having a pretty simple chip shot and then duffing that shot. In this golf lesson, Matt Fryer talks about the causes of your poor golf chip shots and what you can do during the golf swing to see that this doesn't happen. It is a fairly common problem and one that even the likes of Rory Mcilroy, Tiger Woods and Gary Player have experienced.
    If you follow the two golf drills in this golf lesson, you will have an understanding of why the duffed chip shot happens and how you can adapt your golf swing to see far more consistent and closer chip shots.

    Matt.... thank you so much for this video. I have already shaved several strokes off my 9 hole weekly league and full 18 holes weekly rounds in last month. Not only am i more consistent around the greens I'm actually making more putts because my chipping is getting me so much closer. My golf buddies are actually impressed with my short game improvements and i have so much more confidence around the greens.... all because of this video.
    Thank you so much again. Keep up the great work, sir!

    The missing component - the mental decision! There's an underlying reason why people flip the club or cut it off and stop short (same goes for putting especially) - they're not completely convinced the length of swing they need for a shot is correct! They change their decision in the middle of their swing and try to correct it along the way! Make your decision on the size of the swing or the distance the putter must travel for the required distance, and hit it that way! It may not be correct - you may hit a chip or a putt too far or too short, but you'll more often than not strike the ball well, and you'll be able to calibrate your action for the required distance the next time! MAKE YOUR DECISION AND HIT IT THAT WAY!

  • @richardbeck818
    @richardbeck818 3 года назад +5

    Great tips, had loads of these types of shots last time I played. Not sure if you have done it in the past but would love to see how you play a chip from a bad lie when you have a bunker between you and the green. Always mess them up!

    • @jonpomerance-trifts6113
      @jonpomerance-trifts6113 2 года назад

      If you are hitting over a bunker to a short pin, then the mistake is probably using a pitching wedge. An even higher lofted wedge is more appropriate. Maybe a loft wedge is more suitable because you can give the harder strike required to get it over the sand, but with the benefit of it flopping more (Ie travelling higher than it actually goes forward.).
      But you still must strike it well and with confidence. Otherwise you get the same result as the fat/thin disappointments Matt started out with in this video.
      So basically, it's a similar solution but using a more appropriate club.
      Rick Shiels has a good exercise for this.
      Start at a pitching green. Make a very short chip with your first ball. With the second, regardless of where the first one made first contact with ground, hit the next one so it lands just beyond the first.
      Then chip the third shot a bit longer still.
      Repeat this until you reach full swing. Then start again at the short chip.
      See how many you can get before you miss/reach full swing.
      Alternatively, challenge your practising partner, alternating hits, getting a point each time you hit longer within some agreeable amount. E.g no more than six feet/two metres for a point.
      When you add in the little challenge/game, you become very focussed on your task and the accuracy you're going for.
      As you get better, you can reduce the difference in distance required to score a point.
      The beauty, is that you can play this in small spaces too (just don't play to full swing).
      Gamifying practice exercises can make it fun, promote focus, and gives you clear goals to reach.
      Confidence however plays a huge role in short chips. A tentative swing is borne from a lack in confidence which then becomes a result which further reduces that confidence.
      Repetition with variation/modulation is the key to finding your "feel".

    This is great, need to dial these in. My drives go all over, but I average maybe 240 yards so not terrible. I can get within reach of the green to make par 95% of the time. However, once under 50 yards, things get sketchy. It can go well...or I end up with 3 wedge shots to even get on the green, let alone close to the pin. My short game costs me easily 10 extra shots a round, if not more.

    I'm thinking if there is an undulation (slope/uphill lie) between the ball and the pin, it might be better pitch, or flop the ball past the roblem area. That way you have less green to read. Just a thought.

    Can seriously relate. Do everything wrong Matt suggested. Oddly I can chip either hand better than I do 2 handed. My coach tested me on an interesting drill. Breath in, then exhale smoothly all the way through the chip. My default is to stop breathing out as I hit the ball - bad. Can do it no problem at all on practice chips or even one handed chips. All mental. But if I breath smooth, I generally hit smooth. Weird. But like the swing thoughts here, especially of getting the hands to the wall. Off the to backyard to try it.

    Try bowing your left wrist and feel like your placing the back of your left hand against the wall. That worked for me and helped me from getting to wristy and flipping when I was chipping.
