I think Norwegians from other parts of the country than Oslo and its surroundings consider Bergen to be a better representative of Norwegian culture than Oslo since Norway is a coastal nation. Oslo is decent enough, but if I had to choose to live in one of the cities, I would choose Bergen, despite the humid climate. Bergen is also a very beautiful city. I myself have no strong opinions about whether Bergen or Oslo should be Norway's actual capital. Bergen was Norway's largest and most important city until the 19th century. King Magnus Lagabøte (1263-1280) had two sons. One became king, and lived in Bergen. The other became a duke and lived in Oslo. The king, Eirik II, died childless in Bergen. Therefore, his brother, the easterner Håkon 5, took over. He was brazen enough to move the capital from Bergen to Oslo. It is therefore only a death, a coincidence, which led to Bergen not being the capital of Norway today. It must be said that Bergen was run by the German Hanseatic League, and even today there are people from Bergen who say that "I'm not from Norway, I'm from Bergen" in the beautiful Bergen dialect.
