It's actually rather simple, after Mariks psyche (soul) split Millennium Rod simply took advantage of Marik and channeled evil within his heart, creating Yami Marik. It's less of a possession and more of demonic influence, like having cursed objects in your house and attracting evil energy

I really think that Yami Marik is the evil half of Marik Ishtar or that Yami Marik might be something else other than that like some sort of a Demon or a Devil who is capable of possessing Marik Ishtar.

I think that he really is just the split personality of Marik that just managed to successfully command the Millennium Rod to mind control his dominant self to reverse their roles, and eventually exile him. The eye symbol remaining on his head supports this idea; as this is what happened to everyone else controlled by the rod mentally. In other words his split personality is using the true Marik as a puppet. There is never a moment Yami Marik does not have the Rod by his side. It may also be why he was concerned, and frustrated when Kaiba was able to tap into the Rod's power. Perhaps if Kaiba would have taken the rod, and willed it; he could of personally banished Yami Marik earlier on? Just a theory.

Glad to see another analysis popping off! Been meaning to say congrats on getting this done Jared! You definitely deserve more attention! You raise some good points about the contradictory nature of Yami Marik, he's a character well worth exploring that often gets overshadowed by the more resilient Yami Bakura and the more memorable Maximillion Pegasus.

I had a though this would be the fraction of the spirit of Atem ‘s uncle . Who resented his brother wanted his son seto ti be pharaoh. Ended up possessing seto . When he joined zorc. Now he was eventually exercised by seto.
Now what if a fraction of his spirit remained in the millennium rod. A fraction driven by the desire to take the pharaoh place and take power for his own.
It would make sense that this fragmented spirit remained in the millennium rod because that’s the item that belong to the son who he originally possessed in order to claim the throne through his son.
Instead of the millennium eye which belong to to him. This fragment has forgotten it’s identity only driven by the desire to take everything from the pharaoh. It wasn’t till it’s hatred and desires resonated with marik that the spirit became active once again. Once it did it took everything from mark eveb it’s identity as his own. Much like Atem was using yugi at the 1st before yugi became aware and Atem spirit was beginning to gain his own identity separate from yugi.

    • @NitroNEXT

The clues are in the character's inspiration. Some of them have been loosely based on Egyptian gods and mythology. We see this with Seto Kaiba being inspired by Set (or Seth) and Osiris inspiring Yami/Pharoah (even his God card being Osiris) as well as Isis being a loose inspiration for Ishizu.
Plus, the character's true name, Malik (not the transliterated Marik, which means nothing) actually means King in Arabic (and the series title is translated as King of Games, or Game King). That's a deliberate choice from Kazuki Takahashi. It seems like Horus may have inspired him, it would help explain the God card he was given most resembling both Horus and Ra, and according to the mythology, there is a connection between Seth and Horus over who would be Pharoah which aligns pretty well with Kaiba and Malik posessing the Millenium Rod (a king's scepter) in the present and the past and both challenging the Pharoah.

      Cool .
I still like the theory of fraction of aknadin spirit remaining in the millennium rod. Just like thief bakura but because it’s only a fraction of aknadin spirits forgets it’s identity like Atem spirit and only retains their obsession with taking the pharaoh power for his own. Once it awakens due to resonating with marik hatred of the pharaoh the spirit takes Mariks identity. Just to add a deeper connection between the spirits of the millennium items. Makes it more personal.
      Here is another.
Notice how bakura flaunts the millennium ring . He presents it in a way to show it off. As if saying look what I have . When you add the fact that the ring belonged to mahad. It was stolen from mahad after he failed to seal bakura in a stone tablet. To me it feels like Theif bakura took extra pleasure in rubbing the fact he has the millennium ring. That he stole it from Atem most faithful guardian and best friend. The fact he was able to corrupt and use the ring for his plans.
Every chance bakura has to show off the millennium ring . He makes a presentation out of it. The pharaoh at this point in the modern age has no recollection no memories but he senses the evil spirit of the ring. To me bakura had this inside joke . That while Atem no longers recalls the significance of the ring bakura takes great pleasure in using it against the pharaoh.

I believe that Yami Marik is Marik's evil half, but as he uses Shadow Powers it begins to corrupt his body, resulting in all those veins and his muscles getting bigger. He simply has a darker knowledge of the past due to the constant use of the Millennium Rod and the Shadow Realms effects. At least that's how I understood it 😄

You sound convincing, but I always thought it was the Wing Dragon of Raw controlling Marik through the Rod and speaking through him, or the Rod itself backfired creating the split personality when he was a kid, or it could be Yami Kaiba using Marik's body to kill Atem, but now I think it's one of the spirits used to make the items escaped and took control of Marik and used him to get revenge on Atem.

lmao what strikes me most is that this is a college level analysis of yami marik, this is insanely cool, like you have been sitting here thinking and thinking about this. I think your intro was a bit cheesy. I think you should have led with a clip of him doing something evil, or summoning Ra. That would have conveyed it more precisely and efficiently. Otherwise, this is an exceptional video. 5/5 Beyond great job.

Hey thanks for watching! You are absolutely right. Yami Marik referring to 1000 years ago does not line up with any specific date in the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series, as Atem died 3000 years ago. He doubles down on it when talking to Seto Kaiba as well. It's a very interesting line that serves as the impetus for this video's creation because it reinforces the idea that Yami Marik is something MORE than a split personality.

  • @sew-n-so
    @sew-n-so 6 месяцев назад

I think the “1,000 years” gives us more of a view into his origins than we may initially think. We know that Atem’s spirit is from over 3,000 years old. But you know what has been happening for 1,000 years? As Marik says in the manga, his family has been tasked with guarding that tomb for 1,000 years. I think Yami Marik is obviously born from Marik’s madness coupled with the evil influence of the millennium rod-but I don’t think we can overlook that his true origin probably was built up from 1,000 years of resentment from those tasked with protecting the tomb.

You missed a very important part of the story. Shadi saying the soul of the pharaoh killed Marik's dad. But Atem wasn't the only Pharaoh.
Seto was also a Pharaoh. The same Seto that had a connection with the millenium Rod. The same Seto that would logically know the secret litany of Ra. The same Seto who was once corrupted by Zorc and let darkness go to his heart due to the death of his love.
That's what Yami Marik is. The fragment of Priest Seto's soul infused with Zorc's soul. Notice that the three items that are "weak to evil" are the ones worn by people corrupted by Zorc. Bakura, Akhenaden and Seto.
