- From the 1967 movie "In the Heat of the Night," the "Foul Owl on the Prowl" sequence, played by Boomer & Travis.
All you little birds better lock up tight
'Cause there's a foul owl on the prowl tonight.
Hey, little lark, get outta the dark,
Foul owl on the prowl.
Cute little jay, stay outta his way,
Foul owl on the prowl.
You just might be the quail he'll tail,
Foul owl on the prowl.
You just might be the swallow he'll follow,
Foul owl on the prowl.
If you hear him hoot, scoot,
If you pass his tree, flee,
If you catch his eye, fly,
Don't wait to say goodbye.
He's got a yen for a purty little hen,
Foul owl on the prowl.
He's hungry for a chick, so get home quick,
Foul owl on the prowl...whhhooo.
If you hear him hoot, scoot,
If you pass his tree, flee,
If you catch his eye, fly,
Don't wait to say goodbye.
He's got a yen for a purty little hen,
Foul owl on the prowl.
He's hungry for a chick, so get home quick,
Foul owl on the prowl...whhhooo
Foul owl on the prowl...whhhooo
Foul owl on the prowl...whhhooo
Foul owl on the prowl...whhhooo

That little dance with the knife is SO Twin Peaks.
May 26, 2020 was the year diner worker here, Anthony James passed, age 77. This 1967 film 'In the Heat of the Night' was Anthony's first full film and won Oscar for best picture. His last film was in 1992, Clint Eastwood's, 'Unforgiven' and it won Oscar for best picture also! Anthony's first and last film both best picture Oscar winners, were as good as it gets! A great character actor not to be forgotten.
My grandfather passed in late of 2017, it’s 2020 now and I’m currently 22 years old for some reason he had this clip on VHS and he used to watch me a lot when I was growing up and every time I came over to his house he used to play this clip for me and we used to sing along to it I miss him so much and every time I watch this it brings back memories of him I love you so much Grandpa George and hope heaven is treating you well ❤️❤️❤️❤️
i'm sorry for your loss darling i hope you feel his love for you endures x
prolly was a r@pist when he was young. reminiscing about em good ole days
This scene is just so damn good
what a fabulous movie!
I aint serving him!
One of the truly great character actors Hollywood has ever known...
I believe he played Charles Manson in Helter Skelter
High plains drifter
Waiting for insane Wayne episode of the A team
Helter skelter
A whole slew of 1970's shows and movies, he didn't get the proper recognition from Hollywood
@C. Buck Hyres he was a talented individual besides being type casted
Skinny from ""Unforgiven"!
Hids name is Anthony James a Greek man.
Anthony James, what an actor. The film has one of the best casts ever assembled...including numerous "peckerwoods".
I have this on VHS, watched it a gillion times.....just because. I'm not certain which is my favourite scene, I think when the white man slapped him and he slapped back. Priceless.
One of my favorite movies!
Truly one of the greatest films ever made, and brilliant acting 🎭 Poitier and Stieger at there best, love the tune 🎶 as well, that really makes this scene
Anthony James, an instantly recognizable character actor who often played the creepy guy including in Best Picture Oscar winners In the Heat of the Night and Unforgiven, died May 26 of cancer. He was 77.
RIP Anthony James. Your acting will be missed.
I just got this movie on DVD yesterday from Amazon, I watched it completely, what a movie..! A classic.. I am not bragging of myself but it worths every cent.
Love this guy, he always played creepy scary characters in movies !
Arguably, Foul Owl On The Prowl is the greatest song ever written.
Not that _I_ would argue that is.
Even so, someone else might.
Someone who's out of their mind.
RIP Anthony James...a Movie Villain's villian..
Quincy Jones WROTE this nasty song (Foul Owl on the Prowl) just for the movie! This is Anthony James first movie. A long career of nasty skinny slouching bad guys. This, his first movie, won a best picture academy award as did his last film, Unforgiven. Lots of bad guys in between! He was a poet, artist and thoroughly nice guy and much loved.
Yay Quincy Jones for writing an awesome thriller song for a good cracker band in a film about overcoming prejudice and injustice in the old deep South. Yay Sidney Poitier, Rod Steiger, and whole cast and production! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
One scene with three of the greatest character actors ever: Rod Steiger, Warren Oates and Anthony James....alongside one of the greatest movie stars ever, Sidney Poitier.
No doubt about that statement!
I always wondered if Edward Winter (Col. Flagg in mash) could have played Warren Oates character better?
One of the great movies
Such a fucking great film
Just saw this movie on TCM. It's just as good as I remember it. :)
Proud DVD owner! & I love this song...& I'M NOT ASHAMED!!!
💜🦉
greatest and most appropriate song ever for a scene in a movie
master piece of acting
This scene is great! The clean but creepy diner, Ralph (Anthony James) the creepy diner worker's dance moves with a knife in his hand, haha and THIS catchy song. This song really fits the scene, the diner, creepy Ralph, love it! 'Foul Owl on the Prowl' written by Quincy Jones, lyrics by Marilyn Bergman and Alan Bergman. Love the EAT sign flashing outside behind them as they have their 'discussion'. Such a well made 1967 film, won the Oscar for best picture and Rod Steiger won the Oscar for playing Police chief Gillespie. Thanks for this posting.
RIP Anthony James.
I was Fortunate enough to have seen this in the theater in '67 with my parents and my little sister, not one bad scene in the whole damn movie. Saw Bonnie and Clyde the same year
Born in '71 here, but I was fortunate enough to see it in a cinema in 1992!
Wow, what a fantastic film, this just has to be some of the best acting 🎭 ever, one of my favourites
That was the clue right there, using his left hand to start the jukebox!
Ahnaf Tahmed Faiz all the times I’ve seen this movie and that never occurred to me. Thanks for the Easter egg.
Good observation
Maybe. But wasn't being left handed what got the first guy off from being guilty. The murderer is right handed. I'm not sure. I'll check it out.
I love Fowl Owl on the Prowl!
Anthony James was the foul owl on prowl in the heat of the night, he was in so many different movies, movie directors could always count on him to play a good villain.
Gunsmoke Bonanza big valley all the old westerns! Whenever they needed someone creepy a/f they got Anthony or Royal Dano
I loved him in Burnt Offerings!
Always did a good job at it!
@@vlcobb1 Scariest character ever.
You're so right about that, The Carlin Brothers- High Plains Drifter
Anthony James scared the hell out of me as a kid in Burnt Offerings
REST IN PEACE Sidney Poitier (1927-2022)
Anthony James and foul owl on the prowl fit together like a glove.
I also liked Anthony James in The Big Valley and Gunsmoke
Damn song got stuck in my head, and it took me years to get it out. Now, it's stuck again.
I remember this when I was a kid this was brand new movie. This scene scared the shit outta me lol
One of the best films ever made, Sidney Poitier and Rod Stieger at there best and great supporting cast
"If you hear him hoot, scoot /
If you pass his tree, flee"
RIP Anthony James, Rod Steiger and Warren Oates.
And today, January 7, 2022, the great Sidney Poitier.
In fact, this scene and the song give away the plot, but we didn’t know then. Great film. Great acting.
Anthony James (the waiter) passed away today :(
That song cracks me up in this scene. I kept thinking about it after I noticed the actor who portrayed Ralph in this scene in another movie that's on TCM now. " Sweet blue jay, stay outta my way. Foul owl on the prowl now". 🤣
Quincy Jones wrote and produced this tune. Boomer & Travis, some dudes from L.A, sang the lyrics, which were inspired by "Little Red Ridding Hood" (...Pharaohs).
Fascinatingly creepy tune.
"Travis" was/is Michael Martin Murphey, the cowboy singer/songwriter who had a hit with "Wildfire" back in the late 70s. "Boomer" was Boomer Castleman, singer/songwriter/producer who passed away two years ago.
Thanks for answering my question about who did what with "Fowl Owl on the prowl".
I've got The Willie's and there version of this tune.
He certainly did look like someone you would not like to meet in a dark alley lol.
Wow! What a performer! (the killer, i mean) I love this scene and the song is exactly what make the scene so special! O, my God, how i love this movie!!!! ❤️
This fabulous film is rarely shown on British television - probably because it addresses class as well as race. This song is just perfect.
What magnificent acting and shot placement! The music is perfect as well!
One of the best films I have ever seen
Brilliant, and has to be on anyone's list of favorite movies, Poitier was outstanding.
when acting was acting
and for you walking dead folk, a young hershal, scott Wilson...
harry schnepp legit none of the actors in this video are Hershel
Great Scene, with creepy ralph and sam. One of cinema's great movies. Love it.
Love this song. I used to think it was Bow-wow on the prowl.
Anthony James was so perfect in every thing he was in!
I love this tune its great.
The film was supposed to be set at the height of summer in the deep South but was actually filmed in the cool autumn in Illinois. You can see their breath at times in the outside scene here.
You're right except for the scenes with the cotton fields. They had no choice but to go south to film those scenes.
Ha, now that you´re saying it, never noticed before.
thanks. You can't imagine for how long i looked for this song..
Yes - Warren Oates (RIP)
this is the only song I always wanted to be a Bass Player on
+norm lor hey norm, let me know when you win the grammy for bass player of the year, please?
If you hear him hoot, scoot...😂
So I recently watched the movie and this ole tune kept resonating in my head but I couldn't remember how the way the lyrics went? I thought it went something like _how now to the brow_ in Google song search thingy and it recognized it somehow and got me here! 😊
Always loved that scene! Great post!
The scene was originally shot to "Little Red Ridin' Hood" by Sam the Sham. But then he wouldn't give them the full rights. So Quincy Jones and the Bergmans wrote this song, including the lyrics, instead to fill in. That's why it sounds so much like "Little Red Ridin' Hood." And no less than Michael Martin Murphey and Boomer Castleman at the beginning of their careers (they later became "The Lewis and Clark Expedition") sang it.
R.I.P. Sidney Poitier, who left us on 1/7/22.
Rest in peace, Sidney Poitier! 💔
All you. Birds better lock up tight
This film is in my top ten of best films I have ever seen. Whenever it comes on TV, I always watch it. All the characters are superb. Although "Prowl owl on the prowl" is great for the creepy guy, "Li'l red riding hood" is equally as good and Sam should have let it be used in the film.
Authentic, ,we can't have authentic in the movies now can we.
, ?
Somehow I find this song and dance very satisfying 🤔🤷♂️🤦♂️
Sidney Poitier is a freakin legend. He paved the way for Denzil Washington and Morgan Freeman. He was a black man getting starring roles In the 50's 60's and beyond. My favourite line from this film "What they call you in New York boy"? "They call me Mr Tibbs". Classic.
Prom Night in my Rural Arkansas area...so this goes out to all the girls out there! Keep yer wits, and be careful!
I'll bet that's a career misstep that Sam the Sham has regretted to this day. Imagine the cash cow "Red Riding Hood" would've been, with way more air play and remakes and rented out for ads, if it was permanently linked to this film masterpiece.
Those days, Sam the Sam were Latinos (from southern-state Texas, suffered racism like black folk), not seen as "white" or "country" enough- -"Sam" probably didn't want damage to then-"cooler" pop rock career image
The tune sounds like "Little Red Riding hood," by Sam the Shame & the Pharos
Ole Sam is happy as hell about that king size and wedge of pie
My dads aunt owned that restaurant. Freeburg IL.
This is the only acceptable way to dance to this song. Period.
RIP Sidney Poitier 🙏 💔
0:19 jukebox scene
No, it is definately NOT Glenn Campbell singing. By the way I have seen this movie about 10 times and never get tired of it. Also That skinny, tall, greasy character actor
running the diner has been in a TON of movies. He is the perfect killer, weirdo character actor.
"Li'l Red Riding Hood" was written first. "Foul Owl" was only written as a substitute because the filmmaker couldn't get the rights to use "Li'l Red Riding Hood."
The ripoff is so blatant it just cracks me up when I hear it.
Now that's real cigarette smokin music.
The "peckerwood" behind the counter is actor Anthony James. He played hoods, scumbags, and, all around low rent characters on tv and in movies. He was really bad on "The A-Team" and on "Charlie's Angels". He does a good job here!
The guy playing the diner cook (forgot his name) often played character roles in a lot of 1970s-80s tv shows. Often a bad guy.
Anthony James 1942-2020.
my boy is in the diner getting loose.
Like a goose in a runaway caboose.
Actually wanted to use Lil Red Riding Hood by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs but they wanted too much for the rights so they recorded this sound-alike song just for the movie
I aint serving him!!!
Warren Oates was a fuckin wild man in westerns.
who sings this? Great for the character and movie!
No, not Glen Campbell. The song is performed by Boomer and Travis --
Boomer Clarke (aka Owen Castleman) and Travis Lewis (aka Michael Martin Murphy)
@Anthony Garcia The movie Blue Thunder, the guy with the brown beat up Chevy.
I ain't serving him
Foul owl? I've been wrong for 45 years
Good ole Warren Oates.
I'm Dillinger!!! Race with da Devil too!!!🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🐼🐻🦏🦍🐬🐊🐳
Mr. James was creepy as Ralph...his eyes were haunting.
A wedge of pie
The creepy Anthony James was also in the film Vanishing Point. Arthur Malet who played Ulam in this film played alongside James, in VP as 2 gay hitchhikers
Sergeant Hulka?
Quincy Jones needed to write this song because they couldn't get the rights to Little Red Riding Hood. Which sounds very much the same.
The pie tho
Weird fact, the original song was Hey there little red riding hood
@lupine22 Maybe Glen Campbell is singing backing vocals or playing guitar. I have the movie on DVD and the director's commentary does say '"there's Glen Campbell" when the song is playing.
Ian Catchpole That’s “Boomer and Travis” there. Glen Campbell sang another song in the movie. “Bow legged Polly”, which was a knock off of “You can’t roller skate in a buffalo herd” by Roger Miller.
He's really listening to Little Red Rding Hood by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs
Red Ridin' Hood was a good choice to set the mood of that scene, it is a more ominous sounding song than 'Fowl Owl'. Also Sam the Sham curiously has a very similar accent to Delores Purdy (aka Tombstone girl).
Respect mr SYDNEY (tibs) y ROD STAYGHER y RAY CHARLES y mr JONES from ROMANIA.
Mom can I have a quarter for the jukebox I want to listen to Little Red Riding Hood.
Mom-No, we have little red Riding hood at home.
At home
