    I think were getting more yuri anime then before but because of this it is often being rushed and not given the special attention some of the classics have so now were lucky to get a really good one every year or two

    of course it is, yuri anime never gets finished or its just a cut down version where nothing happens or its just fizzles out. citrus anime is crap as it never finished it only ended half way though the manga, bloom into you ended on a cliffhanger and it gets vastly better aafter where it ends like wtf just make a s2 to finish it of i know the main two have sex but ffs. yaoi seams to get actual anime where it ends it gets together etc

    tbh i agree i’ve been pretty much reading manga only for the last couple years and haven’t watched any of the new yuri anime. there was just something special about that golden era of yuri anime and i’ll never forget some of those great adaptations, but right now i don’t have much interest in the current stuff that generally feel soulless compared to works like adachi and shimamura, yagakimi, etc.
    i’d appreciate yuri light novel recommendations by the way because i don’t really know where to look!

      I've recently been reading "My First Love Partner Was Kissing". It's another work by Iruma Hitoma but compared to some of his others, it captures a completely different feeling. I'd go as far as to say that it's completely parallel from Adachi and Shimamura and Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl.

    I think we've gotten some pretty amazing Yuri anime these past few months. Gushing Over Magical Girls, Jellyfish can't swim at night, I'm in love with the Villainous. As well as some pretty good Yuri bait/ Yuri adjacent shows like Vexations of a Shut in Vampire Princess, The two sides of VA Radio, Train to the end of the world. I think quality has been a bit of a mixed bag, but there are still so many good shows, bith original and adaptations

    some people think that the animation in Yagate Kimi ni Naru is bad, and I worry for them. in better news the Look Back movie adapted by Studio Dorian has been breaking reconds in Japan and everyone loves it, and I’m hoping we get a redemption arc for yuri. I think it would break the internet if Otome no Teikoku got animated, and I also want Akebi-chan no Sailor-Fuku to get one billion seasons, because that's when the yuri happens (not like the slice of life at the start is just so perfect, it's so perfect). What manga would you want animated?

    Overall though yea Yuri anime has been on the decline mostly due to the second anime popularity boom coming in the west. Companies are far more worried about putting out another "Citrus" and play it safe.

    As a yuri fan since the early 2000s, let me tell you that yuri is not "in decline" whatsoever. It's always been a niche genre, and sometimes we get a flush of quality that we call "the golden age". I don't know much about the 80s and 90s since I was just born then, but I latched onto yuri around 2003, and 2004-2005 was a HUGE golden age of yuri with the unexpected Kannazuki no Miko (nobody expected the rapist crazy lesbian to win the girl over a good boy competitor), Mai Hime (again, nobody expected the rapist lesbian to win the girl after the rape), Maria-sama ga Miteru (THE subtext anime that gave birth to 95% yuri artists and authors in the industry nowadays), Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (I shouldn't have to explain who Nanoha and Fate are). These works are so influential that back then all the yuri fanfictions are pretty much just in these 4 fandoms, and these 4 kick-started the yuri following in China that made them started hidden yuri forums (because their government do not allow homosexual content on the internet), that eventually gave birth to the whole Chinese yuri novel genre nowadays in big sites like JJWXC.
    After that, there are smaller waves of yuri golden age such as around 2008-2010 with Touhou (a game franchise that have a huge doujinshi scene) and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Then 2018 with Citrus and Bloom into You etc. Why I call these smaller golden ages? Because they are not as revolutionary as the 2004 era, back then it hit so hard it created a whole new generation of yuri authors, and fandoms creating hundreds of new fanfics everyday for at least 6 years. The two newer golden ages are not as game changing nor last as long (except Touhou but Touhou is a game series with new characters constantly), but they indeed still convert a lot of people into yuri fans. All I'm saying is that don't worry, yuri is not dying, it's actually gaining more recognition nowadays, but expecting a constant supply of quality is a pipe dream.

  • @YuriAngyo
    @YuriAngyo 2 месяца назад +4

    Tbh i think it's less about yuri specifically and more that the anime industry as a whole is at a crossroads right now. I mean every industry is at a crossroads rn, but anime is the relevant one here.
    There's just so much shit getting pushed out every season. Idk the exact politics but it's like they're scraping the barrel to find stuff to put out regardless of whether they have the resources to properly support it, and as a genre that's niche & subject to bigotry yuri adaptations of course get the short stick quite often.
    However, this last few seasons has been going insane with the anime original subtext/yuri. Adaptations get shafted over and over, but it feels like a bunch of studios have had some project they're funneling resources into that involves girls flirting. Last season it was hard to keep up with everything, and while none of it left subtext (arguably?) there were just so many good girls to ship from really good new shows, and this season is continuing the face slaps to an extent.
    Like, Shy managed to get a season 2, and while nokotan got fucked over by the licensors cheaping out on translation suddenly vtuber legend turns out to be gay as hell (not anime original but still a surprise to me) and the anime original mayonaka punch reveals it's looking extremely gay and really well made with its first episode. Hell, if the world lasts long enough we've got the Ave Mujica anime early next year and the Madoka movie in fall (i think).
    Basically i think it's a mixed bag. The real yuri adaptations are 50/50 on being average or getting entirely shafted, but the extremely homoerotic subtext is appearing in banger original anime after banger original anime. Hell in the last few years we got witch from mercury, it's mygo, the revue starlight movie, 3 originals last season, look back, lycoris recoil, and probably others my brain doesn't have the RAM to remember right now. I admittedly wasn't the best at hunting them down as a kid but it certainly feels like a lot more and consistently better than in the 10s.

    Honestly I’m sure what’s going on with yuri anime is no different from other anime, basically where the studios tend to rush to get it out and either completely ignore the source material or the visuals are just so bad it’s pitiful

  • @StrawhatOtakuDrew

    I want to start by asking about the terminology. In my past experience, "yuri" was always used specifically and exclusively for girl-on-girl hentai (the counterpoint to "yaoi") while the stories with girl/girl romance that did not feature the adult content were known as "shoujo ai" or "girls' love" (counterpoint to "shonen ai/boys love"). I'm genuinely curious when "yuri" became interchangeable with shoujo ai.
    With that out of the way, on to my observations about the shoujo ai genre. It seems to me that the companies producing the anime don't take shoujo ai works seriously. I've been looking for romance stories in general lately (I'm just on that kind of kick) and I have been specifically looking for shoujo ai for the last week or so, and I've noticed that a lot of the recent ones I've found are series with ridiculously short episodes (3-6 minutes each), quite similar, in fact, to a couple weeks ago when I was looking for romance anime about characters who are NOT kids. The ones I've watched seem to have fun premises and interesting characters, but when the animators are only giving the story an hour or less of screentime across the entire season, the story just doesn't have room to breathe and grow. With most of these, I can tell that, if the series got the care and attention of a full and proper run, they would be really good, but as they are now there just isn't enough of them to truly enjoy. The other big problem with shoujo ai isn't so much with the production as the distribution. I'm finding a handful of the ones recommended to me on Crunchyroll (starting Citrus soon), but most of the title being suggested I can't find to stream even though I have access to about eight different streaming services. For example, where can I stream Fragtime? I've been disabled for more than 20 years with a very limited income, so I can't afford to buy all of these anime I want to see. My family pays for streaming services for me so I don't go insane from boredom. So not only are the good shoujo ai adaptations few and far between, but even when they do come along, it's damned hard to find them!

    • @hop3106
      @hop3106 15 дней назад

      "Shoujo ai" in Japanese means pedophilia, nothing remotely related to yuri. In the 90s when the website Bakaupdates reigned supreme in the western otaku culture, its denizens mostly don't understand any Japanese, so they created the word "shoujo ai" according to "shounen ai" tag, to mean yuri works that do not contain H. But the truth is, in Japan, all yuri works regardless whether it's platonic or sexual, they simply call yuri or GL (Girls' Love). Around 2007, after website 4chan developed strongly and become influential within the western otaku sphere, because its denizens mostly know some Japanese, people started to reject the word "shoujo ai" strongly and deem anybody using it a stupid person, and then yuri became the only word to call all yuri works. I suggest you also throw out "shoujo ai", first to respect Japanese language and not to use such a dirty word to call a whole genre, secondly to signal to other fans that you're a respectable person who is informed.

      Gushing over magical girls was enjoyable, I did say that there were a lot of good adaptations I may have missed. I also mentioned I favor the villainess. Around halfway through the video I state that we HAVE had good adaptations, we don't consistently get them, but we have had a few noteworthy ones over the last few years.
      Merit or not the point of this video was to talk about the disappointment this scene has spewed out over the last few years. I'm sorry if my video offended you or didn't get that point across.

      @@whadasha Dude, I've been watching Yuri before Sailor Moon was popular. Be thankful that we are getting the amount and quality that we are getting. Hopefully we'll be seeing 2nd seasons of Vexations, Recoil, Genius Young Lady, Executioner, Villainess, Gushing, ECT. Especially the way the whole world is dealing with shitty AI art right now. And the quality of Yuri has only gotten better. IDK maybe it's cause you're young or male but the attitude just irked me. Seriously this whole vid just screams male privilege. Or maybe it's because you remind me of the guys who argue the Witch from Mercury isn't Yuri and they are just friends. Ach, seriously thou if you're going to do more on this topic have a lesbian friend with you. But getting a guys opinion on Yuri is like asking a girl what's the best jock strap to wear. There's just no personal experience from real life to relate too. Again not trying to throw shade, I just found this vid really annoying.

      @@whadasha I'm not coming at you from dislike. But you got to remember Lesbian's be the smallest group in the LGBT+ community. Again what does a cis Dude know about women dating each other? It's bad enough that a lot of Yuri is written for the male gaze when it isn't even about you. I'm not trying to be mean. But it's kinda like listening to a pollar bear in Alaska try to describe a Florida Summer. It's just off if you know what I mean. Or a Fish trying to explain how to walk on dry land. If you're going to talk about gay things you need some type of gay perspective. Even if it's 2nd or 3rd hand. Otherwise you sound like a spoiled brat. Again not trying to be mean. I do appreciate anyone's interest in Yuri cause the more folks who watch the more Yuri gets made. To be honest you sound so entitled and because the one show was trashed then all shows must be trash type of attitude. I'd love to listen to more of what you have to say about any other genre in Anime. Just not Yuri. It's like you're so disappointed in Whisper me a Love Song it's ruined everything else for you.
