A big thank-you Accustats for remastering these older matches , such a treat to watch these players that I've heard of but never seen play. Hope to see more. Thank-you.
Grady was always the nicest guy I've ever met. I remember he was at a tournament here in town and a friend and I were getting ready to go out of town on a playing trip. Grady took us to dinner before we went. He had all these great one liners. We got to talking about marriage and he said "I don't get married. Every four years I just find a woman I don't like and buy her a house." As we were getting ready to leave we asked him if he any advice for us. He told us "bet low and kiss high."
@@averageroadie6487 Eh we're all in that boat. I was just curious behind his meaning of the saying. Still a very cool story and experience you obviously never forgot.
Yea I agree, I met Grady a couple of years prior to this, I am not sure of exactly the year. He came to a grand opening of a pool room in Augusta where I was working on an out of town job. I went to that place almost every night. He played with everyone that wanted to for a game or more. I was told "let somebody else play".
Two of my favorite players, and that's from any era. And what a treat it was to hear their commentaries on their own play, and to be able to pick the brains of these two knowledgeable and legendary players. What a wealth of knowledge shared between these two.
I like this format where the players of the match are the ones talking about the game they played. It is really informative to hear what they have to say about their thought process on shots, etc. I would like it if more matches were this way.
I really like this idea of having both players commentating their own match together. On top of that, I always like commentary by Buddy Hall and Grady Mathews.
These two great pool players were a pleasure to listen to. It doesn't hurt that they were very close friends either and that comes across in spades as they comment on their match. I was lucky enough to see Buddy play in person two times in the early 90's and I walked away extremely impressed with his playing ability. Grady was unlucky in this match with how the balls rolled after the break and then he compounded this bad luck by getting ticked off and shooting too quickly without enough thought. Grady's stroke was not dissimilar to the stroke Allen Hopkin's uses. I have not seen any other professionals that I can think of who use this type of stroke. They both have very short strokes but are still able to generate amazing power when they need it. Sometimes I wonder if shooting this way has advantages due to the fact that there is less to go wrong with the stroke. Listening to Grady was especially informative to me because his safety play was second to none or perhaps is second to Efren. RIP Thanks so much for posting this. The insights into the game of pool played by two of the best is priceless.
Thanks for uploading, i liike the Accustats format, where the players amicably commentate. This should be shown on ESPN. 28:07 he didn't play the side pocket ?1

Thanks Accu-Stats for the upload. I had some old Accu-stats tapes from the 90's, and the quality on this looks a lot better that what I remember watching on my VCR 20 some years ago. Good job with the remastering.
@James Tyler ding ding ding!! Someone gets it. And buddy Hall and the others who lost on purpose to cash in during that challenge of champions event didn't help either.
I had just about given up pool because of eyesight until I saw Grady's answer so I got myself some high glasses like he wore and low and behold I'm playing again and playing pretty good may I say. I'm in my 70's and never wore contact lens so glasses were my only answer. Thank you Grady and may God rest your soul!
Grady's shirt. .... I know I've seen that pattern before on many a stripped mattress, It's a good look for Grady. These two old pool sharks really do like each other.
Wow this was great, thank you Pat and team!!! Near the end of the match, Grady and Buddy talk about an Earl and Jose player review tape being available. I will definitely have to check that out.
Grady came in Knoxville Billiard club back in the late 90s. He stayed around for a couple of weeks. I was working there at the time . He beat a couple of House players playin 1 hole. Lol then he would sit there at an old Malibu beach pinball game and played for hours and hours. There was definitely no air in the conversation with him around . Great fella may he Rest In Peace
Brings back memories I used to play Grady at Scott Smiths pool hall actually just played Scott a few months ago his game has dropped off a bit still a shooter though.
Awesome video do you have any of Grady talking about himself playing some one pocket I would pay for that I could learn a lot from his knowledge of what he was thinking about when he was shooting certain shots
Yes, all elements were on display, from great safety play to great cueball control and position. But that is always the case when you say the name "Buddy Hall".
@@Wyattpari2178 Thanks , that's even more interesting than I realized. I always remember the scene where Tom Cruise tells an onlooker "Do you mind - this is a money game" :)
This is a clinic for 9 ball play. Hearing Buddy and Grady's commentary along with it is priceless. Thank you for sharing this.
A big thank-you Accustats for remastering these older matches , such a treat to watch these players that I've heard of but never seen play. Hope to see more.

Two of the best minds in pool telling you what they were thinking. You can't beat that.
Absolutely wish I could hear Grady talking about himself playing some one pocket we could all learn a lot from that session

Thanks! We have a few more Player Review gems from back in the day that we will be remastering!
This should be how matches are broadcast! This is entertaining and filled with so much knowledge!
You're right!

I could watch these ALL DAY. GD ty Accu-Stats.
Their analysis is just priceless. I feel like I'm getting a master class in pool just watching this.
Buddy Hall has the smoothest stroke and pre-shot routine. Never a glitch in either.
Thumbs up before even watching!! Love these older matches.

What a time! Buddy and Grady playing, Efren and Pretty Boy one table over then Varner...
I really like how Grady speaks as a commentator. He seemed like he was a nice gentleman.
Thanks so much for posting. Absolutely timeless!!

Very interesting commentary. Not sure I've ever heard two guys call their own match. RIP Grady
Grady, what a legend, playing that good at that age. True inspiration for me.
And of course Mr Hall as well.

It’s not often you get to see Grady playing 9ball. Much less with his own commentary.
2 of my favorite pool players lifetime, Grady was hilarious to be around, and Buddy played so good sometimes it was scary
Won't scary but it sure was great to see for anyone who has the game in thier veins it's much harder than golf and should have the recognition of golf

That was “Grady seasons” played by Keith McCready. Grady Mathew’s was in that movie tho. He played the old man in the bar called Dud.
