Earthrealm only gets to have one fighter... he has to take on every single Outworld fighter.
That's not a tournament... that's an arcade ladder.
None of the 3 MK timelines have ever had an actual, sensible, fair bracket structure. It's honestly kind of funny how tournaments are so central to the franchise but are never actually tournaments.
Think Pokémon, when one faints another takes their place. That’s why Lord Liu Kang has multiple champions

Liu Kang held a pseudo-tournament in Earthrealm to train them -- we only see Raiden's perspective; just filling in gaps, but I'm inclined to believe it followed "Round-Robin" rules, and Raiden was the only one with three wins. Once _that_ tournament is decided, its victor fights through all of the opposing Realm's champions, and the "defending" Realm gets a sort of home-ground advantage, in the form of fielding all of its champions instead of only one.
It's an awkward format that I can see someone establishing for the same reasons Liu Kang and Jerrod did, but it's also a format where the rules will inevitably foster anger and resentment should any one Realm end up on a losing streak -- as we see with Shao.

Man, the actual Mortal Kombat tournament that the game is named after is like 2% of the actual story. At least it’s not like MKX or MK11 where there wasn’t even a tournament.

@@maryray4960 Sure, maybe it's an unpopular opinion but I think MK works better in a tournament setting. The giant cataclysmic battles over the fate of the world, all the realms and time itself make all the individual characters feel pointless. Like why should I care about the Black Dragon and its fights with the Special Forces? Or about the Lin Kuei and the Shirai Ryu? None of that stuff really matters in the grand scheme of things. it makes more sense when it's a tournament that brings together all these warriors, then these rivalries feel more relevant.

@@ThaGhostGhod it means that actions make the outcome, if you focus on the outcome you are unable to do which action, but if you focus on your actions, then you can determine your outcome. In Raiden's case, Liu is asking him to fight carefully and don't think about losing.

gotta be pretty embarrassing to train for battle and go into wars for decades just to lose to some kid that works in a farm and has no experience of fighting in wars. i mean sure raiden's lightning powers gave him a big advantage but even then reiko probably woulda had experience fighting against similar magic.

Boy they really pushed farm boy Raiden hard. He beat the other Earthrealm chosen ones Johnny Cage, Kenshi, and Kung Lao. Then he goes to Outworld & beats Li Mei, Reiko, Kitana, freaking Shao, and he even beats Sheeva, Motaro, and Kotal offscreen. They practically turned him into a one man army.
Well, to be fair, Raiden now takes Liu Kang's role of the "goodie good guy"-chosen one type of character

Safer...for Outworld. Humanity doesn't play by the rules of closing formations of melee combat-equipped forces anymore. Firearms and heavy artillery would terrify the Outworld forces right before they died. And heaven help them if Nukes get brought into play.

Let's be honest, most places would probably tear themselves apart before Liu Kang got the word out. I can't imagine certain places, and people on earth would react well to the knowledge that their religion is false and the creator of the world is a Chinese guy.

Guess what - The modern world doesn't play that game in fighting. We fight not in CQC except as a last resort. We control range and start inflicting casualties before our enemies can even see us. So, Mileena and Kitana can win any one on one or one on few fight they get into. They can't win if they get hit with long range high explosive howitzer fire or a 2000 lb smart bomb.

I'm not verse on the storyline of Mortal Kombat but how is it that an Earthrealm champion battles five of the Outworld's? I mean, I was expecting champion vs champion.
Host of the game is the one that gets multiple champions. I guess they made Raiden the sole champion to make him reflect Liu Kang’s chosen one status.

Man this tourney is so unfair, the host have 99% chance of victory most of the time because the visitors can only field 1 champion while the host can field 7. And back to back fights aswell. Liu Kang needed to produce Prodigies like Raiden everytime is Outworlds turn to host.
Well Liu Kang has said both Earthrealm and Outworld have been evenly matched, and that Earthrealm has won the tournament frequently so I’d say there’s nothing to worry about there

This is less of a tournament and more of a have your best fighter take on by best warriors with out losing ever way I love having it be a friendly tournament
I like this version of Radien a lot more the role reversal with him and lu kang makes sense can't wait to see where the dlc goes Radien from the past games was always annoying in a lot of ways

This was a pretty unfair tourney. Raiden had to fight three people and win against all, but the others seem to have had to win just one?
Like I think after Johnny lost, it was implied he's completely out of the game.
So one loss = instant out.
But what if kung lao won his fight? Doesn't that mean he wins automatically since Johnny lost automatically after one loss?
I haven’t followed Mk 4 quite awhile, what happened to Raiden being a leader and Liu Kang following.
Basically in the last MK Liu Kang ascended to the mantle of a Titan. (A being above the Elder Gods.) And used his newfound power to try and create a better world since the original had pretty much been destroyed. So he decided to give Raiden his old life since Liu Kang cannot be MK tournament champion in this world.
