It's been almost a decade since Robert Downey Jr and Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and we still haven't gotten any closer to that Sherlock Holmes 3 movie. And that's a bummer because both the movies have been really great, and Downey Jr as Sherlock is up there with his role as Tony Stark Iron Man. Benedict Cumberbatch does a great role too, but there's something Jack Sparrow-y about this version. But if there is something A Game of Shadows really shines at, it's intelligent writing. It always helps to have Guy Ritchie direct and feature super smart characters like Holmes and Moriarty, but there's more to it as well. And so in today's family friendly episode of Film Perfection, let's see what narrative techniques do the writers use in this movie to pull off a script that comes off as one of the smartest ever written.

Iron Man (2008)
From Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures comes Iron Man, an action-packed take on the tale of wealthy philanthropist Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who develops an invulnerable robotic suit to fight the throes of evil. In addition to being filthy rich, billionaire industrialist Tony Stark is also a genius inventor. When Stark is kidnapped and forced to build a diabolical weapon, he instead uses his intelligence and ingenuity to construct an indestructible suit of armor and escape his captors. Once free, Stark discovers a deadly conspiracy that could destabilize the entire globe, and dons his powerful new suit on a mission to stop the villains and save the world. Gwyneth Paltrow co-stars as his secretary, Virginia "Pepper" Potts, while Terrence Howard fills the role of Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes, one of Stark's colleagues, whose military background leads him to help in the formation of the suit. Jon Favreau directs, with Marvel movie veterans Avi Arad and Kevin Feige producing. - Кино

ruclips.net/video/lbZU84h_AP4/видео.html
nah, i think we need more hints to draw a conclusion
I still love the fact that, in the end, Holmes actually loses to Moriarty. He won the war, but he couldn't win the final confrontation. The only way to finish him off was to go for a stalemate. (I.e. throw both of them off a cliff.) It reinforces Moriarty's ruthlessness, and really makes it clear how easily this could have gone wrong. Holmes truly was facing his greatest rival, and it took everything he had to win.
Though to be fair, the takeaway I got from the ending was that, even though Holmes may not have planned every single twist and turn he and Moriarty would go through, he still was planning to go over the egde, hence the breathing apparatus. I do think out of the two, Moriarty was stronger at the party, due to Sherlock's shoulder wound, which gives him the edge he needs to beat Sherlock in their fight.
"A winning strategy sometimes necessitates...sacrifice..."
No, Sherlock definitely won. He took a step Moriarty wasn't willing to do or even considering Holmes would do. He did outsmart him. If Moriarty had even thought for a moment that Holmes could sacrifice to bring his own end then he might have planned for it and have their game of chess in a different place. And it's not like it was a spur-of-the-moment idea Sherlock had. He was carrying the breathing device with him, so he was definitely one step ahead. In fact, it was Moriarty who initiated the idea of a physical confrontation once he realized he had lost. That's the hallmark of a loser right there: someone who throws the board once he sees his defeat is inevitable.
Which is possibly why there couldn't be a third film. Regardless of how well the first or second film did at the box office, if this was truly the battle to end all battles . . .what could possibly follow it? And by this I mean, I agree with you. I do like the RDJ cinematic version of Holmes, and would have enjoyed a series of films with these actors playing these characters but, ending the Moriarty nemesis theme in the second kind of hammered home the last nail. Where do you go from there??
Maybe it should have been a one-and-done film (which I'm not against) or the Moriarty theme should have been a cloud that shaded and lurked behind a series of films.
Oh well. Never mind. There's always the Cumberbatch series.
@@AshGCG You can go the Logan route and have an older Sherlock well past his prime. Some villain pops up and only he can deal with it, so he has to learn how to be Sherlock again.
Now I'm not saying that's a good idea or anything, but that there is plenty of room to make a 3rd film.
When I saw it in theaters back then, and Holmes started his inner monologue about how to fight Moriarty, people cheered... then Moriarty's voice chimed in during the monologue and EVERYONE went silent.
I love how Holmes & Moriarty finish the chess game only in their heads. It's just another small thing that shows off how smart they both are and how they are equals in more ways than they'd like.
Check out Gothamchess who analyses this game on RUclips - it’s actually a real game played between two legends of the game Bent Larsen and former world champion Tigran Petrosian from 1966 - Guy Ritchie the director of the film is actually a very keen chess player

FINALLY SOMEONE GETS WHY THE END CHESS MATCH IS LEGENDARY!!!

The fact they get up and keep on playing on sheer memory of where the pieces are is legendary on its own.
Phenomenal climax to a film. I was on pins and needles the entire time watching it in theatres.
Who doesn’t.
I feel like that scene was a little cliche using chess is a little on the nose, barely a symbol, if it is almost exactly the same thing they are doing, more like a parallel conflict
What I loved about these two movies is that they espoused the spirit of Doctor Watsons journals of their adventures. The very character natures of the original author.
Indeed, very few people notice that, Dr. Watson's (avatar of ACD himself in my own analysis) accounts of the endeavors of Holmes could very well be a romanticized version of the facts, when you read it you can actually feel like he's spicing things up to make it close to fantastic, also the aspect of the author being the author (my theory) is pretty cool.

I say the smartest part of this film is casting Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes, honestly perfect casting.
Yup the casting choice couldn't have been better.
Also the writing was spot-on. Mysterious, genius smartass.
It's what BBC version lacked. So much exposure ruined that Mycroft.
@@tiaaaron3278
> It's what BBC version lacked.
Hmmm, I'd rather think that they actually picked the perfect Mycroft for the films and the BBC series respectively.
In my humble opinion, Gatiss as the mysteriously powerful and seemingly aloof Mycroft who secretely does care and always supports his little brother fits very well into the TV series. For instance, there's that scene in in season one (Ep. 2, IIRC) where Mycroft and Sherlock have this short chat where Sherlock is a little off of his game and Mycroft provides him with a single cigarette, which is just the small but supportive brotherly gesture Sherlock does need at that very moment.
That's what the series build on, and do it well: showing two brothers being quite distant and not really always on the best of terms, but at the same time do care quite a bit about each other in a slightly secretive manner, even among themselves.
Whereas in the films, Stephen Fry plays Mycroft in a way which (at least in my opinion) does fit much better into the more light-hearted (and very subtle humourous) setting of "A Game of Shadows": Fry's Mycroft ist much more approachable, social and sometimes even funny, while at the same time (as you pointed out correctly) still being mysterious, ingenious - and sometimes also a bit of a smartarse when he knows that he'll get away with it.
A guy basically playing himself. Oooh genius

@Jimmy Rustling Are you gonna reply to every single comment with this copy/paste nonsense?
Jimmy Rustling Indeed, I can see how people who would like an exact interpretation of the books wouldn’t really like this series. As someone who enjoyed the mysteries as a kid, though, I found this version of Sherlock Holmes rather interesting. Funny, even. And setting aside that it is not a pure adaptation of Sir Doyle’s books, one has to admit that the series is very well written and directed and filmed and scored.
If you don’t like this series because it isn’t like the original books, that is completely understandable. I at least have to give you props for not being the usual complaint that it is “not as good as BBC Sherlock.” (Which I also enjoyed, but I have more of a nostalgic connection and also better enjoy the aesthetic of the RDJ series) 👍
@Jimmy Rustling Again, of course, understandable. I've read the source material, and I can understand where some hardcore fans are coming from. I guess as long as I think a movie has done well in doing something pretty new, I can personally overlook such things. That said, Sherlock Holmes is public domain now, so there will now forever be new interpretations of the character. Guess we'll have to see if they're up to snuff, be it in perfect conformity or in enjoyable innovation
@Jimmy Rustling I mean taking into consideration that is public domain like HardyGal said, is that people get to give their own interpretation of the character, to adapt it to their story, and how they would like to see the character etc.
Does no-one want to acknowledge that Sherlock holmes is often mentioned to have boxing and possibly other martial arts skills in the books? It's not often mentioned but he definitely has physical encounters in the books.

*Fun Fact:* Arthur Conan Doyle played on the same cricket team as J.M. Barrie, the author behind _Peter Pan._
@Jimmy Rustling True enough, though he did bend an iron poker in half to intimidate a large angry man in The Speckled Band, and then straightened it out again with ease. So while Holmes' physicality isn't a large part of his original character, it does feature somewhat.
@@K3end0 I guess that's the reason why authors like Stephen King, Anthony Burgess, or Roald Dahl hated the movies based on their works because that's not faithful to the original source while the directors added or remove the context just to improve.
@Jimmy Rustling Superhero movies are popular. The Joker was a box office success and the most controversial film that are treated like Clockwork Orange but inspired by Taxi Driver. Even Martin Scorsese admitted that "superhero movies" aren't pieces of art form, but rather a popcorn movie that made millions. The MCU didn't originated the "cinematic universe" since Universal Classic Monsters invented that trope for a long time.

5:00 - Well, not quite. Creating suspense by constantly shifting the power dynamics only works if every turn has been properly *set up.* It is the hallmark of cheap writing to see characters in a verbal power struggle constantly pulling deus-ex-machinas out of their asses that are entirely unfounded in the previous plot. This is what crops up in some of the later BBC "Sherlock" episodes, like when Holmes walzes into the room revealing that he had planted a recording device on the villain all along: this does not feel _earned_ because it comes completely out of the blue.
8:30 - Ah, I bitched too soon. Glad we agree on this one. 😉😘
It also loses a lot, too, if it's too obvious, though. It's like the monster - you can't show a well-lit horror in 10 angles of glory any time before act three; same with broadcasting the emotional/thematic climax of a plot. Regardless of how intricately crafted the bombastic thriller mysteries of the Richie Holmes films are, I find them less enjoyable because it feels like I've seen all this before...then again, that is me personally. This is something that’s so important in writing. Too often writers will write characters smarter than themselves and it’s cringe. Spider-Man: No Way Home suffers from that. In that movie the smart characters use big words to let you know that they are smart. However in A Game of Shadows they show you how the characters are smart by having them scheme and plan. Then their plans clash and they adapt. It’s brilliantly done.

This happens in all sorts of media unfortunately. A lot of people have their favorite games, and because it's their favorites they instantly link the word "like" with "good". @Sidney J. Duffy He's baiting. He claims Superheroes are baby shit but look at his name.
@Optimus Prime Well, technically, Optimus Prime is a superhero (or superrobot?) too. So...
@Optimus Prime quarantine is hitting hard isnt it?
@Optimus Prime You do you. Me? Well, I'm still loving superheroes. They're my childhood memories (apart from SpongeBob) and I will always cherish them.
And I'm sorry to disappoint you, but a lot of human beings in this earth enjoyed superheroes as well. You may not understand why, but it is what it is.
This genre will continue to live and there's nothing you can do to stop it. The sooner you accept that, the better.
I take a look at your profile. It seems that you're fan of females celebrities showing their skins. You dislike Batman but enjoyed seeing Sophie Turner's legs?
Peace and may God save your soul.
Shadow is made from contrast of light and darkness, black and white.
Thus the title 'Game of Shadow' is literally foreshadowing a game of chess 😎
didn't realize that. That is pretty damn smart! thanks for that!
They could have just played Yugioh as well.
My god....... it made sense when Filmento mentioned something along the lines of this in the video but..... this analogy is on a whole other level!
@@somersault1123 That's big brain time, wish they do this
No it's not.
The coolest thing is that their chess game is a recreation of a famous chess match, and that the entire movie mirrors the moves of the chess match. It’s even deeper
Darth Sidious : I AM ALL THE SITH!
Iron Man : Discombobulate
Rey -Nobody- -Palpatine- Skywalker: And I'm Iron Man!
Iron Man: Ah shit here we go again....
> Iron Man : Discombobulate
Sherlock to Sidious: "Oh, and while we're at it: How'd you solve the icing problem?"
Darth Sidious: "Oh, hell no!" **instantly fails** :-)
He used the hate he's been getting to transition into the sponsor, I weirdly respect him for that.
It's like using something created against him for his own benefit. Genius.
You made me feel like an idiot because I've seen this movie several times before and hadn't noticed so much. I love this challenge.
One character I was really impressed by mentally was Kingpin in Netflix’s Daredevil
This is actually one of my favourite movies out there!
@Jimmy Rustling That ability and fighting skills are there just for the cool factor, a spin on Holmes to make it more action oriented and fresh in a certain way. If you want a faithful film then i am sure there already are plenty of them, probably very good ones too.
No way. It’s been like 2 years, and the man did it. The mad man finally did it
The last chess game was one of the greatest games i have seen, agadmator tells about this game perfectly and this game goes fluently with whats happening in the movie, Sherlock Sacrifices his queen and Moriarty thinks he won but then Sherlock check mates him using a bishop, Watson. PErfect
Moriarty: I'm the Fisherman.
Holmes: Fine, then I'm Bruce.
The strongest visual metaphor for Holmes and Moriarty's relationship is that in the scene where Moriarty literally has Holmes on the hook, the time when Holmes appears to be most vulnerable and Moriarty is in absolute and total control, is the time Holmes subverts this by making his big move and swapping journals with him.
Additionally, if I recall, in order for Moriarty to get a little more intimate with his domination (not in a dirty way) of Holmes he actually lets Holmes off the hook so he can get up in his face about who is in control, but it is here where Holmes is able to make his move and he wouldn't have been able to without this show of hubris. It's a game of cat and mouse except that cats also play with their food. Except that this mouse has a trap set up that only works if the cat doesn't immediately eat the mouse but instead lets its guard down at the moment when it seems like the mouse's fate is inevitable. This has been the dynamic for the whole movie. Like someone else was saying, Moriarty could have ended Holmes a thousand times using his resources but he was toying with him because Holmes is the only opponent who can appreciate his genius; the mark of a classic megalomaniacal super villain. Holmes knew this and waited for some opportunity to get close enough to grab the book.
(I think I had one more point but I forgot)
In clinical terms, Moriarty would be a classic psychopath. And one major weakness of a psychopath is their arrogance. Pride is a major vice of a narcissist like Moriarty, and Holmes uses that against him.
17:05 TDK is also the second movie of the trilogy. The main characters and his allies have already been established.
These films are definitely underrated. Are they perfect? No, but I appreciate that they chose to focus on aspects of the Holmes canon that every other property likes to forget.
If I had a penny for every time someone claims to have read the books/stories but be upset that RDJ fights in these movies...
Why I like Guy Ritchie's movies is because he tries to do one golden rule of filmmaking: show don't tell. It makes his movies satisfying to watch because you can see what the characters go through, not just told
Reasons to love this channel: Sherlock Holmes
Reasons to love Sherlock Holmes and show true appreciation: Filmento
No seriously, I love rewatching this movie for every single one of those smart moments, cause its so fun to find the clues hidden around the area that is pointed to, that comes up like a Checkovs gun
0:02 Filmento: "Because I don't have the time to teach you EVERYTHING"
Me: "HOW DOES HE KNOW! :O"
You just have to love every single actor in this movie. Great cast, great story, great movie
Gotta love how in the sponsored segment transition he made all of his haters so salty the air tastes like sea water...
Too tired to explain about people that hate movie channels like yours: They are the type of people that think because a movie is entertaining, it makes it good. 'Entertaining' by no means makes it an actual 'Good' movie.
Exactly!
I can enjoy so much a movie but that doesn't mean that I'll be blind about the mistakes of the movie
Oh for sure. Like I thought Godzilla: King of the Monsters was entertaining as hell. But I don’t necessarily think it’s a “good” movie.
someone should try making a 'good' movie that isn't entertaining
@@douglasmarshall6949 So, Stanley Kubrick?
they are also the type who think that because they didn't enjoy a movie, it means it's bad...
I can't count the number of people who disagreed with me that mad max fury road was an amazing movie, on the sole basis that they didn't like it, despite my well crafted arguments to the contrary, and it's multiple awards...
The fact that all the chess moves actually work... Honestly the chess game is one of the best McGuffins I've ever seen, so simple and elegant
God, the timing. I just rewatched this movie a couple of days ago, and realized how much I love it. And then I remember this is in my que to watch.
I really liked how in the BBC Sherlock, they had a scene where it looked like Sherlock and Mycroft were playing chess while arguing (cliché), until the camera angle changes, and you can see they were actually playing some childish board game. Which is a great symbol for their relationship, but also reminds the viewer that this show will defy your expectations because it is "never" cliché-d.
That show was terrible.
Guy Ritchie should finally give us Sherlock Holmes 3.
I still waiting.
Ritchie is not coming back. Some other guy is directing now. :(
@@tiaaaron3278 NOOOOOOOOO!!!
Sadly, the moron who directed the awful Rocketman film is at the helm of Sherlock 3. We're doomed.
@@ComedyBros5 Man, fuck Warner Bros. They ruin everything.
@@tiaaaron3278 Amen to that. Wish Ritchie was rich enough where he could just have his own production company and pump out all the stuff he wants. Love his stuff. His directing style is unmatched!
Ultimately I guess the third story should be about the simplest thing: these Holmes and Watson are two guys who deeply care about one another, but pretend that they don’t. Their story should end with them finally, openly admitting that they do.
Also, it has to deal with the Fallout of Holmes' death. Both in the original stories and the BBC show it takes several years before Holmes returns to England and Watson finds out the truth. The ending of A Game of Shadows sets that up already (the typewriter scene in the end), but we still didn't get to see Watson actually figuring things out and his reaction to Holmes' fakeout death. And we also need another big-name villain, since Moriarty is hard to top. Maybe Charles Milverton or Major Sholto, or make an adaptation of the Hound of the Baskervilles. There are many possibilities.
Besides some stretches that really push the limits of what Holmes can actually predict in the second film specifically (in regards to the Homesvision scenes), both of Guy Ritchie's Downey-led _Sherlock Holmes_ films are quite underrated. They truly are epic intellectual movies that grow better with each rewatch. Especially when you start seeing more and more subtle unspoken details that speak volumes about the characters.
They also take the source material and really put a sustainable new take on it, while still staying loyal to the essence of said original material (aka. _Dark Knight_ trilogy-style). Really looking forward to a third outing, but also scared because it's been a long time and I'm not sure they will stick the landing, especially if Ritchie is no longer involved.
This is an amazing video, what a brilliant breakdown. Hats off to you for this.
i like the Sherlock Holmes movies but they have one flaw that keeps me from *loving* the movies: Watson doesn't act like he enjoys the ride.
One of the best things about the stories and even BBC Sherlock is the (platonic) affection Sherlock and John have for each other as BFFs and the joy and excitement they have for The Game makes season 1 and 2 pretty fantastic television.
Law's Watson seems to be dragged along for the ride very reluctantly, seems to resent Holmes like everything is happening *at* him instead of being *with* Holmes, which is a bummer
Yeah, though even then, I still love their dynamics
To be faire, Watson just married & about to starting a more peaceful life with his wife, but he still have to deal with his "cool hearted" partner interrupting in the process ... and the danger still around all of them.
At least this is just my opinion, and i do agree with your point too.
Idk, I found this Watson more accurate to the source material. BBC’s Watson was soo passive which I hated. This Watson is actually competent and is sherlock’s friend not Sherlock’s dog.
Here it's been a long time for both of them being on adventures together
Nope you're wrong. This watson is actually competent and does help out holmes neck and neck.
Perfect Timing! I needed a fun video! This channel is great dude!
even explaining the ending fight scene with the power struggle made me excited lol such an awesome movie and awesome youtube video lol great stuff
I’m so glad someone else appreciates this movie like I do. I was surprised to see its middling reviews, and thought maybe I was missing something for a while.
I already loved these Sherlock Holmes movies, but your breakdown has made me have a newfound adoration for them. Thank you sir!
Another great film by 2 great actors who work together
Perfectly..to tell great stories in the film industry of Hollywood... well done guys..well done
Love your content! Beautifully put. Your video changed my outlook in comparison to the previous film.
