    You can use maps from youe favorite video games to build "memory palaces" or "memory houses." For example I use the maps The Pit and Valhalla from Halo 3 to store mnemonic imagery I that triggers some memory I need to recall for a test or something. I'm an engineering student and it has really boosted my confidence during tests/exams

      THIS right here is awesome. I've used the Loci (Memory Palace) method quite a bit in the past, and am blown away by how effective it is. Especially how long that information sticks around for recall.
      One of the biggest challenges I've personally encountered is running out of locations to use. This is an excellent approach to massively expanding the options you can use. Even better, at any moment you can do a walk through to re-establish memory, or even download a layout of the map to label for additional reference and solidification.
      The Memory Palace, or Loci method, has been on my list for quite a while to make a video on. Work has just kept me from being able to release more regular videos. But it will happen at some point soon! May have to include the video game map tip in there too. Thanks for sharing and swinging by the channel!

    My biggest improvement in smarts happened around 1 year ago. When i started laying Hearts of Iron IV. It is a ww2 strategy game where you can start from either form January 1936 or August 1939. OH boi Oh boi.. I was SO BAD that i lost as Germany to Poland on my first game cause the tutorial was so confusing (I realised later that i learn more easily by myself basically from mistakes). It had military doctrines, weather, biomes, terrain.. even a focus tree?? I started to get better at doing the encirlements depending on a few scenarios. Either get medium tanks and clap the infantry, get anti tank divisions and clap the mechanized or tanks and finally paratroopers. many more were made according to terrain. Gosh i felt so smart after conquering the soviet union within 1.2 years! I it was 4million soviets dead and mine around 250k-400k

      Love how you mentioned that you end up learning better by just playing with the game mechanics and figuring it out through trial and error. That's a real life example of how iterating a simulation over and over and over again leads to effective learning. AND you got really good at it after sticking with it for a while.
      Same part of the brain that figures out the rules and mechanics of a new game, is the same part that figures out new situations and skills in real life too. Thanks for sharing your own personal story of experiencing it! That's awesome.

    I have doubts about this experiment as from how you described it they were missing a control group that doesn't play video games. Without the control part of the experiment the data will not be accurate. Do you have a link the the case study so I can read more about it?

    • @CommonKnowledge42
      @CommonKnowledge42  Год назад +2

      Hey Sirius! Sorry I missed this comment. I might have gone a little bit 'too' high level for the sake of brevity in the overview of the study for the video. This cross-sectional, observational, study had both an experimental group and a control group. The control group was administered the same test battery as the experimental group, but without the introduction and exposure to video games.
      Here's a link to the open access version of the study if you want to dig into some of the details!

      I had a feeling it may have been left out in your description but still present in the study but I still had to mention and check.

    Playing for ex. futboll is one thing that fits to this narrative, and is also healthy for many reasons. Health, social relations and so on. Videop games may be fun but in essence i would recommend something else, even gardening, you also need strategy, knowladge, and its dam fun while doing things in your yard you can watch all those various bugs that you didnt ever noticed or birds, and it also can be a social expirience.

    • @CommonKnowledge42
      @CommonKnowledge42  Год назад

      I actually coached futbol (even if we call it soccer up here 🤣) and I agree, there is tons of overlap from the concepts of this video and team sports. You're given an environment to test out things and get real-time feedback, and the development of automatization is huge.
      As an additional benefit, you're knocking out the mental aspects of improving intelligence right along with the physical aspects all at once.
      (Also, big fan of noticing the unexpected small things like bugs and birds that you may have never noticed if you weren't actively looking closer and being present in the world too.)
      Thanks for watching and dropping a comment! Great perspective!

    If I’m being honest, I personally don’t know if video games help me. I for some reason have this addictive personality. If I like something, I go all in. I can’t play video games because if I do I will want to be the best at it therefore distracting me from real life responsibilities. I used to be a very HEAVY competitive gamer mainly in first person shooters during my teen years, so around 12-17, am currently 19 almost 20. Bc of hardcore tryhard gaming, I spent sometimes up to 6-7 hrs gaming. Even during school. I play very sporadically now.
    I found out that even watching tv gets me distracted. Right now I’m working on controlling my impulses, though the real underlying thing is actually curiosity. I’ve always been super curious about everything since little. Can be a gift or a curse especially now in the modern age of distraction. But when I put my head down into the books and wrestled with multiple ideas from multiple authors, I got hooked and literally exponentially increased my knowledge and understanding of things. But still left me more curious. Why am I saying all of this?
    Someone will definitely relate to me and want to tell you that you’re not alone. If you have crazy creativity like me it can really make you feel as if you’re an outlier. Learn what helps and what doesn’t. I figured video games don’t help me bc of what I described above. My brain absorbs ideas, information and situations like a sponge and is coming constantly with new ideas and perspective. So I can’t play video games or else that’s what I will spend all my time on trying to become the best and “figuring out”.

      The good news is, sounds like you have a superpower 😜 The bad news is exactly as you described, pointing the energy from that superpower in the right direction is incredibly challenging.
      But, back to more good news, it sounds like you're already focusing on doing precisely the right thing by gradually learning how to control it and use it in a productive way (absolutely not easy, that's for sure...) And when (not if.. I only know you from a comment but your ability to understand yourself in a deep way shows, and you're gonna' crush it) you learn do excel in doing that - it doesn't matter if it's your professional life, creative endeavors, or any problem you aim that energy at, you're going to excel greatly.
