I think the barn doors are great if you have pets....because many pets cannot open a standard door or turn a door knob if they need to get in or out in an emergency...with barn doors they can take their paw pads and push...pull...or slide the door open. Love the outcome but a little lost since you said you were going to use the door you had. So the reason in removing the original gram and bringing the header down was to fit the actual door size or a new door in another size. Can I use my 24X80 door following this video. Sorry a newbie to all this. Thank you
Yes you can definitely use your original door as long as you bring all sides of the frame in a little so that it fully covers the opening. The only situation that I might not recommend it is if it’s a really small door to begin with. Good luck!
The right tools always make the project run smoother. I guess if I had a suggestion for your viewers it would be to wear eye protection when popping frames out, that errant piece of paint, wood splinter could send someone right to the ER, wasting perfectly good handyperson time!

But I'm sure I'd get caught dragging the old door's out and get charged for the damage even tho there damaged all ready 🤷♀️ thanks for the video and ever little bit helps
use safety glasses to protect your eyes. Use a ladder to bring you up to your work to avoid having a hand tool fall on your head. This is a super tutorial.
Does the door still hit the light switch? That is what I wondered about while you were getting ready to do it. I wonder about what kind of latch you would put on the inside to keep people from walking in.It is still an improvement and solved your problem.
Great question! The door comes right to the edge of the light switch. Originally I thought I would need to move it, but it worked out so the door just barely misses it.
Where did you get the door you use and where did you purchase it? I am needing a similar door, as I have the same type of louvered doors in my bedroom. Love the look! Thanks!
I believe I ordered it from Overstock.com. I looked everywhere for my delivery email but can’t find it. If you search louvered door on overstock or Joss and Main, you’ll find something very similar. Thanks for watching!
That looks good. But, I wonder if we have wheel slider on the top of the door only or do we need to have another slider at the bottom of the door also?
No wheel needed at the bottom. The door hangs and there is about an inch of clearance. I do have a guide installed at the bottom that I added after the video. It keeps the door from swinging out.
@@TheUnprofessional Thanks for your reply. I was searching you complete video to prove bottom support is needed. Could you please get me the video timing so I can find it how the guide support was provided at the bottom of the door.
It’s not required to add a bottom support of any kind. I did add a guide later (not in the video unfortunately) because the bathroom is for my young son. If this was for an adult, the guide would be optional. Hope that helps and sorry I don’t have it filmed.
Way to go, your door looks great! Now why didn't you patch the wall and paint prior to installing moldings back? Regardless the finish product looks really good with that kind of door.
Thanks, Jerome! That definitely would have been easier. Honest answer, it was my first time doing something like this. I’ve done another door since and I patched first. Live and learn I guess :).
It’s about 4 inches from the corner, which is actually a perpendicular doorframe. I think you’ll be fine as long as the door stops just before the corner. Even a half inch would be enough in my opinion. Good luck!
I got the hardware on Amazon. Despite being on the cheap side, it has held up extremely well. There is a link to it on my blog post here theunprofessional.com/make-any-door-a-barn-door/
Why you would ever install a barn door on a bathroom that cannot easily be locked and passes sound through like crazy is beyond me...looks nice though. Great job on the work!
Haha well I think there are two types of people in the world, those who think a barn door on a bathroom is gross and those who find it perfectly acceptable. I fall in the latter of the two groups 😜. It’s my kiddo’s bathroom. Perhaps I’ll change it when he becomes a surly teenager. Thanks for watching!
So what did you use to lock up the door when someone is inside using the restroom? Any locking mechanism you I talked with the barnyard door? Just curious?
I didn’t add a lock because the bathroom is for young kids, but a hook and eye lock installed on the inside of the door and the doorframe would work great.
We didn’t put a lock on ours, but you can add a hook and eye lock, which is what I’d do if privacy was a concern. Amazon also has more sophisticated locks specifically for barn doors.
I love the video but I noticed you didn't install a lock. I am very interested in installing a door myself but a lock is a must for me. Any suggestions?
The door I used didn’t have a door knob. I probably would figure out a way to add trim if I wanted to cover a hole. Or I’d attach a recessed handle. That would be the most functional solution I think. Great question!
It’s a bathroom for a child, so a lock isn’t currently necessary. When he gets older, there are sliding door locks that we can install. It opens and closes just fine without a handle. I thought about recessing a handle but I feel like it wouldn’t be worth the effort since it’s perfectly fine as-is. Thanks for watching!
So I have almost the exact same set up… but the left side has barely any space and would only allow the door to slide open 18 inches. So I had a bifold barn door custom made from a shop who specializes in sliding barn doors. My contractors are nervous it’s going to have a weight balance issue when the bi fold is open and angled out, causing it to tip down. The hardware is for a bifold barn door and weight is within range - the track is made to hold 2 separate bi folds that come together. I’m doing 1. Any suggestions to reinforce? Along the bottom? There is one pivot plate in the corner.
Interesting solution! I’m so curious to hear how it turns out. My thoughts are to put up a really sturdy header and make sure the tracks are attached really well. I understand the contractor concern because even though the weight works with the hardware, the stress on the tracks will be much higher when the door is folded. You could try a small castor on the pivot point. Good luck and send me a photo when it’s done.
Thanks! It'll be close, but it's totally possible if you lower your frame. My ceiling is 90 inches and I have 5 inches left over between the very top of the hardware and the ceiling (so in total, my setup requires 85 inches of space). You could also look for hardware that takes up even less space. Let me know how it turns out!
I have the stopper set so that the door goes exactly to the edge of the jam, so yes, it clears the opening but not the casing. I could set it to open further but there is a light switch on the other side.
@@TheUnprofessional thx for the reply. I agree. I’m about to install new trim & install a new barn door kit. Would you then just gap fill/caulk the 90 degree trim join?
First time to your channel, I was looking for something like this to change a closet door which is very uncomfortable to open. Thank you so much Lara for sharing this. My question is , I don't want to change the whole frame, do you think I can put an extension on the bottom of the door since it's going to be an open gap, an anyway I'm going to be painting the door as well? Or this doesn't work? Also, Which exactly was the barn door kit you used for the project?
Your barn door looks fantastic! I’m impressed with this woman’s carpentry skills!

@@TheUnprofessional . No worries. You have explained things in detail. Thanks so much👍
Would be nice to add a latch on the inside to prevent the door from sliding while in use, ie a lock.
That’s the plan for when the kid gets a little older.
Great video, thanks for sharing! Not as big of a job as I originally thought it might be, and not as expensive either. :~)
Right?! It turned out to be a pleasant surprise for both cost and effort. Thanks for the comment!
How close to the corner does the track go? I would like to put a barn door on the entryway of our hallway, but it is a corner.
It’s about 4 inches from the corner, which is actually a perpendicular doorframe. I think you’ll be fine as long as the door stops just before the corner. Even a half inch would be enough in my opinion. Good luck!
Thanks for the video!!! Where did you get your hardware?
Can you lock the door since it does not fit into the door frame?
We didn’t put a lock on ours, but you can add a hook and eye lock, which is what I’d do if privacy was a concern. Amazon also has more sophisticated locks specifically for barn doors.
Awesome job!
I love the video but I noticed you didn't install a lock. I am very interested in installing a door myself but a lock is a must for me. Any suggestions?
Thank you! I’d probably add a hook and eye on the inside of the door and the door frame. You can also find locks made for barn doors on Amazon.
What did you do about the door knob
I didn't see it there when you hung the door up.
Did you fill it in or what???
The door I used didn’t have a door knob. I probably would figure out a way to add trim if I wanted to cover a hole. Or I’d attach a recessed handle. That would be the most functional solution I think. Great question!
I. Have. Questions. Is there no handle on the inside or the outside? How does the door stay closed/locked when needed?
What size nails did you out in your nailer for the inside casing?
I used 2 inch 16g nails. They are still holding up great after nearly 4 years.
We’re there any “big” gaps? I would like to use this for our downstairs bathroom but I fear it wouldn’t be private enough?
I don’t have any big gaps, but depending on the type of hardware you use and whether or not you use a header, you could end up with a gap. Good luck!
I’m in
was there a gap between the finished door and the frame?
Yes but it is very small. Perhaps a half inch or less.
Cool I wish I could do stuff like you do 👍👍
Great idea
Thanks!!
@@TheUnprofessional You are welcome
Nice video!
Question, how much space do the tracks above the door take? I have an 86.5" ceiling and was wondering if I have enough space.
Nice!!!!! Great video greatest Ideas
When open does it clear the entire door opening?
I have the stopper set so that the door goes exactly to the edge of the jam, so yes, it clears the opening but not the casing. I could set it to open further but there is a light switch on the other side.
You are amazing.
Thanks, you are too kind!
Is there a setback for the new trim against the door jamb?
Nope. I kinda like it without the setback, but it could go either way.
@@TheUnprofessional thx for the reply. I agree. I’m about to install new trim & install a new barn door kit. Would you then just gap fill/caulk the 90 degree trim join?
Yep! That’s exactly what I did.
What do you use to lock the door? I still didn't have idea.
I don’t have a lock on my door, but you can use a hook and eye or other locks made specifically for barn doors. Thanks for watching!
I think it could work if you incorporated trim pieces or something to mask the added portion.

Love it
Muchas gracias. Perfecto.👌
