Great question Jonston. If the filter is installed backwards, it can restrict the airflow, resulting in your HVAC working harder to make up for the loss of airflow. That would lead to higher utility bills and could even damage the unit itself.
@ryanvargo aprilaire website for merv13 in orange box or below every 12 months. Merv 13 in blue box or higher every 6 months. This type of filter actually filter better as it "loads up". Replacing early robs you of some of the best filtration. These time lines are also based off run time, not a calendar time line. Usually best to run it either 6 or 12 months on calendar time frame. I do as I have 3 dogs

Aprilaire recommends that if you have pets or run your HVAC more than normal, you should change it more frequently. Your situation may vary.
