    Absolutely Beautiful!! It is also wonderful to be able to rehearse with and make sure I get everything right since we are doing this piece for Midnight Mass this year. The violins make it much easier for me to be able to do my counting. I am a site reader learning how to read my notes. I love music it is my passion, also a gift from God so I sing for HIM!

    In case anybody was interested, Bach was a composer at a church, and likely wrote this in a couple of days to be played at the week's mass. He wrote hundreds of these things.

    I just love it. It amazes me how Bach can set the same borrowed chorale melody and set it to such a beautiful background. But, what's crazier is just how every time he sets the melody, it never sounds exactly the same because of the tone of the accompanying melody and continuo, and what ever the text for that particular movement is.

    Ven ahora, corona preciosa,
    Señor Jesús, hijo de Dios!
    Hosanna!
Soli Deo Gloria!!!!

    The actual name of this piece is “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme”. “BWV 140” is its ID number for compositions by Bach. And this recording is just one movement of the seven movements of that piece. This piece is based on an earlier hymn written by Philipp Nicolai also called “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme”.

    This is much faster than I was taught to play it in the solo organ version of this piece, but listening to the violins and the tenors at this tempo, I really like it! I do not think I would care for the organ version at this tempo quite as much.

    I agree...tempo is perfect, it makes it fluid. Love this version!!!!
    ..............................................

    @urmorph I agree! Ultimately, a performance should appeal to the audience and this performance certainly does, with its dance-like articulation and beautiful tenors. "Authenticity" should always be an acillary consideration. Bach's music is beautifully versatile and expressive!

    Zion hears the watchmen singing
    The heart of her with joy is springing
    She wakes up, and stands, hasting off.
    Your friend comes from Heaven prancing
    In grace strong, in verity advancing
    Her light burns bright, her star goes up.
    Now come, thou worthy One,
    Lord Jesus, God's Son!
    Hosanna!
    We follow all
    To joyful walls
    Then halting in the supper hall.
    ---
    Herr Jesu, Gottes Sohn!
    Hosianna!
    Wir folgen all
    Zum Freudensaal
    Und halten mit das Abendmahl.

    I actually think this an exceptionally well-judged tempo which perfectly suits the chorale - not too fast that the diction suffers, not too slow that everything drags and the blissful sprightlyness is lost.
    Same can't be said about the organ version, which is recklessly fast.

    It is a Chorale, as it is the theme the sopranos have in the opening and closing movements, and is the theme around which Bach chose to model the cantata. It can be misconstrued as an aria or solo b/c usually they would be performed with only 1 (occasionally 2) voices per part. As a result, in an authentic performance, there would probably be only 1 or 2 singers on this. Both au2gyg and gerritmaas are correct here.

  • @urmorph
    @urmorph 14 лет назад +7

    I thought the tempo a bit quick at first, too, but the more I listen the better I like it--fresh and crisp, dancelike. I also like the rich sound of plural tenors and violins. If JS had 7 tenors like these he'd have loved it! While I'm on the soapbox, may I request that all English-speaking music critics drop 2 w ords from their lexicons--"authentic" (reserved for old paintings,antiques and wills) and "valid" (passports and drivers' licenses only). Thanks.

      John. This is a very valid complaint and I have to agree with you bro....people just need to be authentic in their comments and resist the urge to get validation from other inauthentic hipsters and flipsters. So let it be written. Love you man.

    Despertad, nos llama la voz
    de los vigías, arriba en la torre;
    despierta, tú, ciudad de Jerusalén.
    medianoche se llama la hora;
    nos llaman con voces brillantes;
    ¿dónde estáis, vírgenes sabias?
    Sin duda ha llegado el Novio;
    levantad, tomad vuestras lámparas,
    ¡Aleluya!
    Preparaos para la boda,
    habéis de encontraros con Él.
