- Black Is The Colour:
This is my take on the old Celtic folk song, originally from Scotland.
I could never find the person who wrote the lyrics, even though the arrangement has been credited to an American song collector. The song has been covered by many great musicians over the years, including the amazing Nina Simone. It was first brought it to my attention by Christy Moore at a live show in the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, aside from being played in bars that I frequented, that was the first time I heard it.
I then remember reading the lyrics for the first time, they had an overwhelming feeling of darkness. I listened to it over and over, I've been hooked on this song ever since.
The thing about all great songs is they make you feel part of the story and you relate to it in your own way. This song does that for me and much more.
This video is depicted by a picture I often have In my head while singing this song, then brought to life by Kale Beaudry and myself.
If you are affected by any of the scenes in this video please reach out, they're people who care about your wellbeing. There is light. Family, friends, people who want to help are there.

Most artists I've seen do this song try to make it overly complex, and for me that ruins it.
Paul Caldwell does a great version of the song. It is a simple, but beautiful. An aching, melancholy memory of one that has passed, and that's how this song should be done.
Amazing! My sister heard someone playing this song in a pub in Ireland while on her honeymoon (it may have even been your band, I don't know) and she now plays it as part of her acoustic set here in Canada because she loved it so much.
Cal Ewing nice one! What part of Canada? We’re in Vancouver.
@@PaulCaldwell1 Oh that's awesome. We are in Calgary. Where can we follow you in case you end up playing shows in town?
Cal Ewing, you can get me on Facebook or Instagram @paulcaldwellmusic. Or go to paulcaldwellmusic.com. Hopefully get to Calgary soon:)
I am a Russian lady. When I was in Ireland I heard this song in one of the Irish pub and I fell in love with this song forever! It is GREAT!
This is beautiful! Shared with my black-haired fiancee!
This is love worth waiting for. To find your soulmate is truly amazing. I have found mine. My life has changed forever. We are one. I searched and searched with no luck. Then when I just let life happen he appeared. It started with a simple hello---- Love you honey
That’s beautiful version!
Paul Weller's version makes me fall in love..
Paul Caldwell's version makes me fall in gorge/ravine..
This version had me immensely emotional that I even shed tears..
Acoustics, Rhythms, Drums, Bass & the Celtic pipes + vocals & video... This is what happens when a sincere man focuses on one woman & what he gets in return.. (& vice versa)
I am out of words to share my acclamation.. Paul Caldwell is a Sincere Artist! Respect!
wow! just wow
What a great interpretation of this great song.
I love this version of the song ❤️ Absolutely stunning! This tune is near and dear to my heart and you NAILED IT! Stunning!
So happy I found this version. Absolutely amazing. Liked, Favorited and added to my Spotify playlist!
Wow 🤩 I came across you and this video by accident. I was looking for cover versions that are pure, deep, fragile.. And found this one. Touched from the first second, pressed the follow button from the second and then just enjoy. 🥰 Your voice is male, experienced, shaped, broken and got up again. for this love Very well done, thank you. I'm looking forward to your other songs.
Me too! I love this!!
Oh my Gosh! This is one of the most beautiful rendition I heard of this song! Thank you for sharing it 😘
First time I've heard this song was in a bar on some island somewhere in time long ago. What was long forgotten has now returned in twice the amount of load it gave back then. Thank you!
It is unfortunate that you interpreted this song in such a dark way. That is something you should take to prayer. The darkness is in you not in the song. The groaning sound comes from what a pure bred feels when he is passionate about some thing. He feels it, as if it were pulling on his bones. It gives to him not takes away.
Man..i felt this ❤ great version.
The arrangement is so fantasic man, well done! Love from Indonesia ❤🇮🇩
great Version. thanks . Your history of the song is correct as far as i know. ( so many get it wrong) One thing to add it that is has only become popular in Ireland since Christie Moore sang it. He was taught it by Hamish Imlach - his best version of it is linked on here by someone else. I've never read where he learned it from.
Thank you very much! And yes I heard Christy’s version first! He’s great for bringing these songs to a wide audience! I don’t think I’ve heard the Hamish Imlach version but I’ll have a listen! My favourite version is by Nina Simone. Check that one out!
What an amazing cover, this beats any version I've ever heard.
sounds like you don t know nina simone. but yeah this is good ;)
I have nothing but respect for this. You truly captured the emotion and you make the listeners feel it. This is honest musical art
Thank you very much!
Amazing version of the beautiful song
Oh my goodness great music and those pipes made me tear up a bit so deep and emotional!
Heartfelt version - every single artist in this track has played their heart & soul out. I don't know how many times I've listened to this masterpiece. Paul Weller's version has its own way and this one is on another quest.. Regards
Amazing love it 😍 Just bought the album of a ITUNES, well done lad!
Yikes that is beautiful! Moves me to the core. Fantastic.
Ok now im hooked its a song and a story pure talent 😮
I've Been Listening To That Song Ever Since I Was A Small Child And I Have To Say That This Is The Greatest Cover I've Ever Heard It's Absolutely Breathtakingly Fantastic Thank U So Very Much Paul Caldwell
It's good....but don't come near Christy Moore' s version.
I love your take on this song. This is an amazing take on this beautiful song
This guy should be a superstar.
His voice..😳..fknl...❤
Love this version but also love this aswell ruclips.net/video/CdwoDWBnDtE/видео.html R.I.P Hamish Imlach
Hello Paul! How are you? Hope you are well! I really like this song and your unique way of singing! I live just near the river Clyde in Scotland. I came here from Ukraine because of war…. And I loved this beautiful land and feel it my native. By the way, you are very handsome! 😉🤗
Brilliant version of an old Scottish ballad
Celtic
@@CharlesNewkirk-lb6uhlt's a Border Romanichal Gipsie song about transportation. Nothing to do with Celts gadgie. x
I have for years loved this song, by Christy or Gaelic Storm. still love them, but none touches the passion and pure feeling that Paul does. Thanks.
I am listening to your song every day! Love it and love you as a singer! Would be happy if you could answer me just a few words…☺️
All comments to Mary, love the groundwhereonshegoes...mother of JESUS
I Love it👌👌🍀🍀. Really nice
For me the absolut best version of this song. Well done, Paul!!!!!!
🖤
Just checking-in again so you know this amazing song remains a much-loved part of my favourites list, and is listened to regularly. Wonderful rendition. Is that Jonnie Walker Red Label you're drinking, by the way? Good choice.
Much love from Belfast xx
C
Thanks very much! And yes Johnnie Walker red. Hopefully get to Belfast next year!
Amazing stuff everyone of your songs are amazing. much love from bonnie auld Scotland.
just another check-in comment for a song - and version - i love. I've taken up the piano since my last check-in, and this song has spurred-on my learning. @PaulCaldwell has quite literally inspired me, and it is THIS version of the song i (try to) play on the keys.
Lord, this reaches deep into my Scottish dna. What a powerfully moving song that is sung so brilliantly.
Amazing rendition - glad I stumbled upon it.
Those pipes and his voice makes for an extremely emotional and impactful sound 👀
Love this version
Beautiful! Well done! ❤
Amazing! And the pipes, majestic!
You knocked it out of the park mate; Not better than Christy Moore, but just as good in a different style!
Fantastic rendition.
Only heard of this song a few weeks ago. I've listened to several versions before I came across this one. This one is tops. You've captured the Celtic haunts and the sounds of the isles. I was literally swept away.
But, I did not like the ending. Suicide is cowardice and I don't think his love would have wanted him to cause pain to his family and friends. That's my opinion.
But, the song is amazing!
Similar experience, I heard this song on the radio a few months ago for the first time and Ive been trying to find that particular version, but this was really good, passionate, the emotions building, and I’m like you I don’t like the ending, but I don’t think it’s cowardly, it’s just so sad, and there’s good still to do
Love this version ❤
Imagine a man wrote that for a woman he loves. Oh wouldn't it be beautiful to find a love like that.
i did and i cant get this out of my head and my love
@@warpedgenius5182 then you are truly blessed 😊
@@S070-g8q lol thanks i forgot i said that you know us americans lol we dumped each other lol
Beautiful version !
This video made me cry. My love's hair is indeed black, and we are currently separated by an ocean, and financial difficulties, but want so badly to start our lives together. I have only ever heard the Gaelic Storm's version of the song before this one. At first, the melody was haunting, and was beautiful, but seemed sad. At the end, when he jumped...it made me feel how I would feel if I could not get back to My sweet Emie...😪
I am always yours my sweet love...I will wait for u till my last breath..I love u!!!
@@fil-amlovestory461 I love you more, my sweet love, I cannot live without you, and I am thankful to have found you in this lifetime!
Best version of this classic I've ever heard, absolutely outstanding.
Ye obviously don't know this song..came across this version by accident and As they say accidents happen .... he destroys a classic! Disgraceful...drink more Johnny walker man!!!!🥺
Hahah, cheers lad. Who owns the “classic”?
beautiful rendition ~ thank you
The Twilight Zone episode "The Passersby" brought me here.
I'm afraid there is no evidence that this is a 'Celtic' song. It has never been collected from traditional singers in the British Isles. The only collected versions were from the Appalachian mountains area of the U.S.A. The oft cited reference to it being of Scottish origin because the Clyde is mentioned in verse three is far from convincing. There are two River Clydes in the USA, much closer to the Appalachians than the Clyde in Scotland. Also, the version collected by American folklorist John Jacob Niles in the Appalachians refers to 'Troublesome', a creek local to the place where the song was collected, and there is no mention of the Clyde at all. The singer just gave it a local flavour by naming a local river. Certainly folk songs travel around and many songs travelled from the British Isles to take root in America but there is no evidence that this is one of them. It's not impossible but the more likely explanation is that the song is American in origin, though influenced in style by the many songs America inherited from Britain.
You’re trying your best Mate, but it’s about THEE Clyde, in Glasgow, written in the Dear Green Place.
Christy Moore even admits that he heard the songwriter singing it in a Glasgow pub and asked him to be able to use it .
I’ll let you find out yourself who actually wrote it but, pull your Yankee neck in, coz it’s nothing to do with you 🏴
What is the instrument called the person is holding across his lap, like an oboe?
Uilleann Pipes.
I definitely like this version! Ryan Kelly is still my favorite version, but this was a close second! :D
Paul you sang this song brilliantly, first time I heard this song was by Hamish Imlach from Motherwell Scotland , nice one , very powerful , thanks Mitch
Nice Love/Peace XO
I love my love.
Love this version man. Really like your tone of voice deadly !!
Have a version myself if u would like to listen. !

Oh my, by all the gods and goddesses this is such a wonderful haunting song. It has really touched me, thank you for your talent and this amazing song. Your emotions in your voice and on your face are breath taking.
Thank you!
Fantastic. Really well written. Great love song.
Fantastic
Cheers Paul have a good one buddy
De beste uitvoering die ik ooit hoorde van Black is the Colour, zoveel emotie ….kippevel❤😊
Beautiful
awh man brilliant
Your voice has so much character. And the arrangement is so badass. I’ve listened to this 10 times already .
This version you are singing is different from the Niles version, it’s simpler and less medieval feeling. It seems to have been picked up in Ireland at some point . Niles in turn claims to have made his version up, which is odd because it is more medieval sounding than the original folk song that sharp collected .
I completely agree, I always thought the song is Scottish by the line that says “I’ll go to the Clyde and I’ll mourn and weep”
The Clyde is in Scotland.
From the claims that Niles has made, I’ve found a few statements that said he just rearranged it, as in melody. But could never find the actual writer.
Thanks for your kind words!
@@PaulCaldwell1 Niles arrangement is pretty but it feels like it needs a B section . It's like half a piece. I tried combining this version with Niles version, but it only half works
Would like to see you do other folk songs in similar style !
@@PaulCaldwell1 this song only entered ireland in the 60s when christie moore the irish singer heard the scottish folk singer hamish imlach sing it and asked hamish if he would teach him it. the clyde is indeed in scotland. this is an american rework.....nothing to do with ireland. there are many scottish and english sangs in ireland picked up in the 60s when "irish" music was just starting. you can look up christie moore on you tube and you will hear him tell the story of how hamish taught it to him.

Excellent interpretation. Kudos!
How can this only have 220 likes over 1½ years?
Luke Bakker thank
You! I guess it takes time with a song like this. It could help if you share!
Merci!
Absolutely beautiful. So emotionally sung.... and very sad.
Paul weller did this on his cover album "studio 150". PW version was the first I'd ever heard. This is a grander, fuller version imo for what its worth. Christy Moores takes some beating though.
much prefer the easy club version
Amazing! Best cover of this ever.
The pipe player is amazing
Hey Paul!
Search Christy Moore singing this and then make your own mind up ? Christy sings it sublime in my opinion ! Not knocking this, it is great !
tony x search for hamish imlach scottish folk singer who taught this sang to christy in the 60s.
........played the guitar for years ...okish, but how the hell do do you learn that pipe thing and where lol ....amazing

That's like calling Mozart "some Austrian bloke" wtf my man
Shane Etchison who are you referring to?
Great version man. Really liked it
Damn!⛈ A brilliant, passionate, tragic take on a beautiful song. If I am ever lucky enough to be in the same city as Paul Caldwell when he is performing, I'm there. I will add that I appreciate the great musicianship of the band, as well as the acting.
Thank you very much! What city are you in?
Now living just outside of Phoenix, Arizona!
A lovers song!!!
Absolutely brilliant....
Cursed in darkness thanks very much! Please hit the subscribe button if you get a chance! Cheers.
@@PaulCaldwell1 totally will dude... that's some take on Black is the colour.. where did you ever get that idea. I'm a musician and love that song but would never have thought of that. It's not even the same melody.. works better I think. Cheers 🤘
Cursed in darkness, thank you! it’s kinda based on Christy Moore’s version. But when I was learning it, I went over a few different versions And found Nina Simone’s version. I heard the darkness in it when I read the lyrics the story came out more. The melody came when I started playing it live.
Do you have stuff recorded? I’d like a listen.
@@PaulCaldwell1yes I have stuff recorded, a bit more grungy and rock. Just search for Cursed in darkness and look for the reaper head. I haven't really shared my music from that channel. Actually just press the head and a bigger one comes up... press it and you're there... the first one isn't mine and needs to come down. Thanks for the info btw.
