Dr. Bruce Edwards Ivins: America's Unsolved Anthrax Mystery
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 июн 2024
- For several weeks in the Fall of 2001, America was gripped by twin terrorist plots. The September 11 hijackings were a massive world event whose effects continue to ripple throughout most corners of the Earth; in the weeks after the Twin Towers fell, though, there was nearly as much fear and anxiety about a small stream of letters that were intentionally laced with anthrax.
The killer was never officially identified, and the case was never formally closed, but one man has been intrinsically linked to the story from beginning to end. This is the story of Dr. Bruce Edwards Ivins: American anthrax expert and bioterror suspect.

I remember this pretty well. I had a kidney infection at the time and my doc prescribed Cipro for it. He made the joke "Well if this doesn't work, at least you'll be protected against Anthrax for the next week."
@Chas Maravel I live in the midwest. We still had a supply.
Before 2020 I would’ve said how sad it is that y’all joked through what sounds like such a terrifying time. Perspective is weird.
Also, do you think he did it?
@@oppaloopa3698 The best way to deal with something so dark is to laugh about it. Not sure if he did though.
@@oppaloopa3698 it's a healthy coping mechanism
I’m allergic to Cipro and a couple of other types of antibiotics. My doctor asked if I could maybe do him a favor and let my husband bring in the mail until things calmed down. lol
I was finishing my Ph.D. in microbiology working on anthrax spores in 2001. Our lab was one of four non-military labs to have the correct strains. We had to undergo significant questioning on the events. Soon after I moved from bio weapons research to environmental research.
Weapons research sounds cooler.
Do you think that Dr Ivins did it? With letters being mailed from the NJ & FL towns where the terror cells were located, the fact that all letters were written either by the same person or group of ppl (including those who got fake anthrax), the belief of some who worked in the lab w/Dr Ivins & former Senator Daschle’s & Leahy’s concerns made me look into it. I don’t think they could’ve convicted Ivins & the list of those excluded from investigation in the months & years after the anthrax mailings is concerning. Finally I believe that Ivins suicide was due to embarrassment that the whole world would find out about his bizarre issues & that his family would be financially devastated trying to prove his innocence while up against a steamroller. If you haven’t already, you might enjoy the mental exercise of delving into the details of the case. You’ll be surprised regardless of the conclusion that you reach. Enjoy.

When I was about 9 or ten I remember waking up in bed to a big argument between my Mum and Dad downstairs. I heard my Mum say to my dad " I wish #### had been still born like the other one" I still think about that today, and I'm 61. I have two fantastic Grandchildren (6 and 4) and I can't give them enough love. Everyone tells me I'm a softie and a pushover and I should instill more discipline. I have never told anyone why I cant.
"Instilling more discipline" like beating them when they do something you don't like? Absolutely not. You're doing right. They need to be taught not hurt. They are human beings when they're conceived not when they turn 18.
I want you to know I think you're a strong and compassionate person. Your grandchildren will learn their own life lessons. If you always treat them with love, respect and compassion, they will remember that of you over anything else. You're doing the right thing and I respect the hell out of you.
@@drrocketman7794 instilling more discipline doesn't automatically mean beating them, goddamn. Maybe they're just too lenient and should be stricter.

When they were divorcing, my mother confessed to me that my father wanted her to get an abortion instead of having me. I already had a bad relationship with him so it didn't really surprise me. Some years later when drunk, she then confessed the only reason they had unprotected sex that resulted in my birth was because she was on drugs. I just try to use that as context for everything I've accomplished and am still capable of accomplishing. It sounds like you are doing the same, and I am glad you shared.
There's nothing more tragic than a child being born and raised to parents that don't want him.
Amanda Beaty * Insert promotion of comprehensive sex ed. in schools, widely available contraception, bodily autonomy for women, social safety nets and not making having a child bankrupt you here. *
Nothing more tragic? What about a pile of neglected children, all of them eating each other? Would that not be even more tragic? Yeah, I do not believe you know what "nothing" means, especially in this context. In this context, the context you provided, it means this is the most tragic thing to ever happen, and will ever happen. Do you really believe that?

This was an incredibly fascinating Biography on Dr. Ivins. I worked for ten years producing the Anthrax Vaccine, and we had such strict protocols in place to make sure nobody was able to walk away with any tubes of spores. It just makes me wonder how he managed to put together so much Anthrax without drawing attention to himself. Didn’t they have any safety protocols in place to make sure Anthrax wasn’t disappearing at Ft. Detrick? I am sure things have changed since this happened, but to me, that is THE most scary part of all of this. There are labs all over the place that hold deadly stuff capable of being weaponized. I hope protocols changed in those labs, also!
es que cuanto más nivel tiene el laboratorio más trabas digamos tiene para manejar esos microbios o riesgos para los que los manipulan como para la sociedad. el más alto es el nivel 4 y están solo en las potencias mundiales ubicados.

How do you get Anthrax, I've been told that you get it from dirt, It's probably a crazy story to tell that group of lab monkeys digging up dirt near the drain in search of Anthrax huh? Seems like Anthrax is publicly available information, is it possible for it to be a weapon?
@@susanrobinson910 The FBI completely dismissed investigating the world's largest producer of Ames Strain (from Ivins' flask), UBTL at Dugway Proving Ground, because they already had their man (falsely accused Steven Hatfill before they falsely accused Bruce Ivins, get that pattern of behavior). The FBI did not find Ames Strain in Ivins' car, home, or clothing, but they sure found it in the mailbox at Princeton Univ in New Jersey. No explanation from the FBI on how that could possibly happen. The FBI did not find or identify the incubator/fermenter, dryer, or mill that processed the Ames Strain that was used in the attacks. If there is anything to be afraid of, it is that there is still the processing equipment used in these attacks out in the public somewhere in America.
After the first couple Anthrax cases, Scott Ian said in an interview they might have to change their name to Basket of Puppies. He said it jokingly, but later said that if it became a real major widespread problem, they might have to actually change their name.
I remember that. He said he felt like it was the 30s and his name was “Freddy Hitler”.

@@nad1ax2 not what i meant. I meant for there to be like for instance a way to sort the specific theme of the video into the specific year it happens so there was a way to go down all of these persons in a chronological way.
That doesn’t make sense bc in many videos many years, some times thousands, are covered. It wouldn’t be possible.
Best biographics this year. Gave me those good chills
I struggle so much with this case. The evidence is circumstantial and he took his own life so know one knows. It does seem like it was likely him, but the fact the FBI just said it was him after he died makes me think they didn't pursue all leads
Yea it seems like it coulda been him due to his suicidal/homicidal urges but once the FBI shoves their nose is it and starts making claims, you start to feel cautious.
They’re already doing a balancing act when there’s not pressure on them. For all we know they pulled off a successful MLK with him to get it over with.
If you know anything about the Atlanta Olympic bomber then you'd doubt their case against him even more. They literally ruined a guy's life, his last name was Jewel I believe. Got him to confess, sign it, and give details about something he didn't do. His own mother even began to hate him. Anyone that said the evidence suggests it was someone else was silenced or transferred. Even though bombs were still going off months later and he was under constant watch by agents. I was in 4th grade during those Olympics but I still remember the whole ordeal somewhat. There's a series on Netflix that goes over it really well.
who ELSE when there's literally no other suspects? It's obviously him.
Read the Wikipedia article on his case they have some pretty good evidence as to why it likely wasn't him. It was far too advanced for a single person to have orchestrated. The former deputy commander of the USAMRIID had said that it would have taken him years with a full staff to come up with something of similar purity levels and as weaponized as the strain used in the attack.
@@heyheytaytay It's exactly that kind of thinking that gets innoncent people convicted and/or allow criminals to go free after the police have found a "favourite" suspect, dropping all others. I happens numerous times.
They had so much evidence he wasn't ok, even threatening to shoot up a therapy session and they arrested him A DAY LATER the threat. Even if he weren't responsible for the anthrax attacks he was pretty screwed up, and no one seemingly did anything aside from brushing him off.
Ivins had neither the skills nor the means to attach silicon to anthrax spores. It has already been concluded that the anthrax was made by a US based pharmaceutical company hired by the United States government in effort to gain more support for the war in Iraq.

Yeah, that happens to the groundwater near pretty much every US military base around the world. Turns out they all have dumping grounds & burn pits for the improper disposal of hazardous chemicals.
Exceptional story, exceptionally presented. One of your best. Thank you.
The vast majority of people are too blind to see the tell-tale signs of someone that's disturbed and dangerous. Such petty, passive aggressive and extreme lengths for revenge - extreme in the time invested, not the outcome. Always beware of what people tell you and how people act.

If Ivins was experiencing pain in his arms I suspect he had a form of undiagnosed bipolar disorder in addition to his other pathologies. He appears to have also had some religious obsessions. He wrote a couple of brief, cryptic letters to his local newspaper that referenced Israel and implied he supported some kind of "End Times" world view. Glenn Greenwald published several posts examining the case against Ivins and stated that while, given his personality problems and access to anthrax, he was an obvious suspect, the case against him was fairly weak and in some instances contradictory.

Just a word on that accident in the Soviet Union.
Anthrax spores were released from a bioweapons facility, Compound 19 in Sverdlovsk (Yekaterinburg) on April 2nd 1979. The authorities (including Boris Yeltsin, who was a local Party official) originally blamed it on tainted meat.
Approximately 100 people died, though the official death toll will likely never be known, as the KGB destroyed all related hospital documentation.
If the winds had been blowing towards the city, over 200,000 people would have inhaled it.
Just some words, Unit 731 and American involvement and cover up of war criminals who literally killed thousands with Antharx and other inhumane bioweapons on Chinese civilians
As much as you would like to blame the Russians it's probably the Americans yourselves who did something and hid it away and tried to cover-up.
2001 was a very scary time to be growing up as I recall
