The extra research points you will get as campaign rewards. Then you can spend them at any bureau project. I think they still don’t work on the older bureau projects though, just the newer ones. Or you can save them up. There’s a cap set on 3,5 million. Any research points you get over that, will automatically be converted to credits. When you used them you used them. But you can get more from progress in campaigns. You get more of them with admiralty backing then without.
I managed to get the Connecticut in a crate, thus far it's been...interesting. I've been surprised by the commander that I'm using....not Sims (though I was using him as the primary commander) not Willis Lee either. George Dewey. Yep. He seems rather good for the Connecticut, at least so far. I have him at 15/3 matched up with Space Fishy (16/2) & di Revel (16/3)...this has greatly increased my torpedo speed to 48 knots. I'm still trying to aim better regarding the damn torpedos but I'm getting more strikes since I addressed the torp speed. The hybrids are fun ships.

Or is that just you manually deciding where to point?
These boats really have good offensive capabilities.
