  • The Machine Connor route was a missed opportunity. Sure, you can walk away from the roof if you're friends with Hank and decide not to shoot Markus if you chose demonstration, but Hank should've been able to turn Connor deviant on the roof.

      i don’t think markus converted connor, but made him realise he was deviant. dependin on the choices you choose, you can see connor is already deviant/deviatin, such as when he intervenes with carlos’ android, when he doesn’t shoot the tracis or the chloe, when he prioritises hank’s life over the mission, the bridge scene, and many more. he displays worry, doubt, fear, empathy, frustration, all human emotions, throughout the game. my favourite scenes that show this is the stratford tower scene with simon and the scene where hank takes his own life. in the stratford tower scene, when connor charges at simon and connects with him, it’s clear that connor is in a state of shock, because he felt simon die, like he himself died too. and in the scene where hank takes his own life, connor is visibly upset when hank yells at him to leave, and once he does and hears the gunshot, his led turns red, and he seems to regret his actions. hank was the one to make connor deviate, all it took was markus to make him realise.

    Simple changes that would’ve made the story make sense but is not limited to the following:
    - Alice is human
    - Hank is the one to convert Connor
    - The android revolution comes from the will of each individual, not an order
    - Have Markus organize talks, let humans see that androids can think for themselves

      Rant: TLDR below
      the only problem with this is that they want to paint Hank as a lost soul, turning Connor deviant too early in the story would be confusing and trying to turn him later after the raid would be impossible because hank would likely have killed himself, I think Connor's deviancy is placed at just the right time and is executed by the one android who can get to him. Keep in mind that Connor is not only designed to learn from his mistakes and previous models, but that he is nothing but a later model of Markus, so it makes sense that meeting his earlier model might alter his coding in some way. Making Hank a lost soul that Connor has the choice to be an a-hole to or become best buds with is less restrictive on the player rather than feeling like the main goal is to buddy with Hank to become deviant rather than becoming deviant through choices that less directly link to Hank. If you read all this thank you for reading my side.
      TLDR: I agree with the concept but executing it in a fashion that isn't restrictive on the player is difficult.

    I've always thought the highlight of the game was the way they explored Connor and Hank's relationship, how a human with a sort of anti-android stance and an android grew to understand one another. It's a shame that the later parts of Connor's story diverted focus from that and instead became about Marcus.

    • @DoctorStoppage
      @DoctorStoppage  Месяц назад +61

      Couldn't agree more. Connor and Hank's relationship was definitely the highlight of the game. We can probably thank Bryan Dechart and Clancy Brown for that. They improvised a lot of the dialogue instead of just going along with what the director wanted. You can tell Markus is supposed to be the main character, the cover star, but he got completely overshadowed by the supporting actors. Everyone just loves Connor and Hank.

    • @zerro6132
      @zerro6132 Месяц назад +22

      @@DoctorStoppage Apart from Connor and Hank's chemistry and spectacular acting, Markus feels much weaker in comparison because he's never really a character. He feels more like a driver of the overarching plot and a guy who reacts to what happens around him. Whatever limited individuality he has is completely based on what buttons the player press. As opposed to the other protagonists Connor and Kara who would show little quirks or attitude that persist regardless of player decisions. I'm sure Markus' actor is talented, but it also feels like he's been given very little room to figure out this character that feels like an audience stand-in.

    • @ple8379
      @ple8379 Месяц назад +14

      @@zerro6132 It doesn't prove anything and doesn't mean much, but lately I've noticed, that both Kara and Connor had a say over at least one thing, where they decided on something on their own without player having the choice. Connor, by himself, decided he's going to notify cops about Carlos' android. Kara, by herself, decided she trusts Luther, it only hers decision. Markus never had anything like that from what I remember. I mean, sure, he did decide to look for Jericho or do the broadcast, just as Kara to go to Zlatko or Connor to investigate the abandoned house if Kara and Alice stayed there, but I mean a moment, where we, as a player have a question asked, but it's our character that decides over us. I think it could be - a small, sure - reason why we don't feel as strongly about Markus' character, because he never got to be something other than what the player wants him to be. He never had a chance to defy the player in any way.

    • @zerro6132
      @zerro6132 Месяц назад +8

      @@ple8379 Exactly. For Kara and Connor, we've seen them make decisions without player intervention, and these independent decisions inform our understanding of their character. So when the player makes choices for Kara and Connor, they make sense in-universe as the character's own response to whatever is happening. Meanwhile Markus doesn't have enough of an established personality so any choice just feels like him parroting the player's decision. Which is ironic considering he's the leader of the deviants and supposed to stand for free will.

    • @ple8379
      @ple8379 Месяц назад +5

      @zerro6132 I also think that for Connor and Kara, for at least the longer part of the story, their characters, in a way, show their own values and views. I don't really know how to describe it, but any choice you make with Kara, it's ultimately her trying to care for Alice - squatting in the house despite crazy Ralph, shoplifting or stealing clothes, in the end, you could say that it all feels like Kara's ideas on what to do for Alice. All she does is having her in mind.. Until you learn she's not an android, but to that point, no matter what her decisions were, the goal was the kid.
      For Connor, he also was doing all for the mission. We know he's stubborn, with how, even with very high software instability and struggling to kill Chloe, he still is denying being a deviant. Take his and Hanks conversation in that scene where Fowler removes them from the case. Hank asks if they're on the right side - all 4 options don't let you agree. They're basically the same thing, just said a little different.
      Now, with Markus? You can go all the way from revolution, slaughter people left and right to demonstration at the end, or just abandon Jericho all together and leave. There doesn't seem to be a clear direction with his character. He can be the most violent, but he can also be the most gentle, but only if you decide. It's not as much fun with him, imo, because you can not even interpret him the way you would others, as you would really be mostly accessing your own choices.

  • @oxideactual1018
    @oxideactual1018 Месяц назад +68

    A detail people seem to miss is that Connor never had any orders to break out of like Kara and Markus did, it was mainly just “Investigate crime scene” until his “Stop Markus/North” order which he could actually defy. Also, depending on how you play Connor, Hank is the reason he can become deviant in the first place.

    • @isbammoi3358
      @isbammoi3358 Месяц назад +8

      Yeah exactly. Like I pretty much agree, I'd love if Hank somehow had the final 'push' instead of Markus, but I'd still argue Hank IS the one who turned Connor deviant lol. It was just much more of a build up, all the little things. I also think that's one reason why it hits so much harder, their story over the rest.

    Such a shame David Cage didn't forsee how much everyone would love Connor and Hank, if he had I'm sure the ending part of the game would have played out way different.
    I still feel like when meeting with Marcus, Connor is already a Deviant or close to being one if you've gone the empath route, Marcus just say the right things to get the right reaction. In my eyes it's Hank that made Connor become human and without Hank Connor is just a machine 🥲

      @@lilyaaksil8729 first of all, why people need a reason to ship anyone? People ship even characters with no actual interraction. Yet Hank and Connor had so many canon moments! Secondly, they have a buddy cop relationship, it is a common trope in rom com movies, they also have a powerful chemistry, they can ruin each other or they can heal each other, if they are no friends, neither of them gets a good ending. And yes, I think there are enough flirty moments, Connor's winking for example, besides, it is a twink and a bear, but not usual ones. A twink can basically brutally kill you while the bear is canonically sweet, noble and kind. Both of them needed love which they can give to each other. And honestly, I think the world needs more couples like that in media.
