Part 14:
We are using dead standing pine trees cut from my 40 acre property and some spruce. The logs are arranged in a butt and pass method and then held together with spikes.
We mostly rely on the help of a chainsaw to cut the logs, a tractor to drag and a lot of labor to lift them and put them in place. The pines in this replanted forest are fat too overgrown and have been grossly mismanaged. The trees should have be cut and thinned nearly a decade ago. Removing the dead trees is a good start to rehabilitating the forest. Later, we will thin even more and get the forest ready for replanting and rejuvenating.
In this part, we will continue to erect the log cabin walls from the foundation up. I will use the butt-and-pass method which laps one row of logs over the other, while fastening the logs together with spikes. This is simpler and quicker because it does not require the tedious work of scribing each log and notching.
A butt-and-pass corner joint on a log home creates the look of a rustic, old-fashioned cabin. As the logs are laid to create the outside corners of the building, the first log on each layer extends past the corner, and the log forming the other wall butts into the first. As the timbers are laid to build up the corner, the extended logs alternate for an effect that resembles interlaced fingers.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.

Put a loft in that sugar shack!
Some advise on using espresso coffee in a French Press.
just prior to pressing the coffee, stir the mix a little. This will loosen up the grinds and you will be able to press the coffee easier.
Yes I learned by trial and error.
MOSTLY ERROR.
With all these little buildings ur putting up is that going to effect youl land taxes? It definitely would in the states.
You sounded like me creekwater pancakes lol id say something like that too. Lol cream of washoom soup. Lol
Done!
"You have taken some stuff and turned it into things" That is the perfect description for this channel. 😄
I love that sentence. Sometimes making things can feel so complicated on multiple levels. But in essence it's always taking stuff and making it into something. That simplicity feels soooo good man.
That black walnut is beautiful!!!
Wow giving race to trees now I see....smdh
@@AmericaNeedsWeed That's the type of wood it is. Not sure what you are trying to get at.
@@MrTwister70 sure it is.....
@@AmericaNeedsWeed which school told you black is a race but not a colour?
@@Dub105 This moron is just a troll, even if they didn't know before they commented, when they were told they shrug it off instead of looking it up with a 30 second search, this person clearly just wants a reaction from people, if we ignore these donkeys then maybe they will go away 🤷🏼♂️ well hopefully anyway 🤞🤞
Wow, the black walnut that you have milled is so beautiful...should be made into table and you guys can have proper dining table and chairs. The maple sap that you have done seen thru the bottle looks good 👍.
Hmmm...pancakes? Wow...lovely and Chris is mixing the mix and frying it. Wish I m there to taste it. Yum 😋😋😋 Must be good 👍 you have done the roofing as well. Ahhh...good job 👍 well accidentally you have sliced off a little part of it. That's alright just screw it back to the beam and bolt 🔩 it. Can't wait till the roof when completed!!!
Wow thanks for showing us the fresh milled black walnut! Now i get it, it’s absolutely beautiful 🤩
That is breath taking. I’m just sorry I’m so old..I started by being raised in the bush.. never lost being bushed...proud of this Canadian beginning...proud of your videos too
This man deserves way more subs and views with the amount of effort, thought and time that goes into his projects.
He also played several roles in wooded beardsman videos, both behind the scenes and in front of the camera over the years . Let's help spread the word so we can keep watching these awesome vids!
Much appreciation from Tampa, Fl!
“They either get burnt... or they’re... not burnt...” Fantastic explanation. Eggs benny would definitely be difficult over a fire 😂 that grill is pretty sweet!
You had me at coffee! 💕 wow that black walnut wood is absolutely gorgeous! That syrup looks amazing. I personally would make French toast over pancakes. Still looks yummy 😋
Dude, your entire group of friends are all so camera friendly... Kevin, Don, Donnie... and you and your brothers chemistry is hilarious... almost like you've been working together forever... lol
OMG. Those pancakes with fresh syrup look awesome. Jealous in the lockdown. Great video Kevin. Keep up with the great entertainment and ingenuity.
Drill holes in the both the end of the log and the piece of log you need to reattach and use rebar to reattach the smaller piece to the main log. Three or four pieces of rebar should work fine and if you line it up right, nobody but you, Don, Chris and 141K subscribers will know ;)
would that be a rebar biscuit?
Do this it is easier for the main roof the BIG Pieces !!! with a Pulley also!!!
I love everything about these videos. The building, the banter, the trial and error. This is what I aspire to do one day. Great work guys!
I agree! These guys seem really genuine.
You should do a drone shot of your property and show all your building you have built !
You are a chainsaw and milling wizard. And you make me laugh - “Kevin cussing in the woods”. 🤣
Love you guys! Have a wonderful Easter! Thanks for the common-sense solutions to problem solving. Have Chris and yourself ever made a Q & A concerning your childhood and how you guys have arrived in each of the places in your lives? You both have a unique and wonderful circle of friends. Continued Blessings.
Haven't done one... maybe we should.
Beautiful black walnut! It is always nice to see the cuts from different trees! Thank you for showing us the walnut.
That black walnut is absolutely beautiful! So Kevin you have to make us something really nice. I know you can do it.
That Black Walnut is absolutely gorgeous. It would look beautiful as a set of benches with backs for a table and a beautiful pelt laid across the back. Like inside a massive comfy study or just a lounge area.
Nice job Kevin. Once ur evaporator is set up in the hut. Throw a rope gasket between the firebox and the pan. It’ll keep the black from getting on ur pan
That Black Walnut - holy cow! Super nice! And, per usual, thanks for the time and effort...and sharing the fun - your channel is my favorite. 👏🏻☺️
Omg that walnut is amazing!!! SO BEAUTIFUL! That would be an awesome resin table!!!!
I can't wait for the black walnut creations series!
This is a bunch of guys I would hang with. Getting to be my favorite channel quickly.
Wow!!! That black walnut is stunning!!
"It goes right there" as he reaches up, holding the cut end of the log. I had a nice hard laugh, thank you! Love watching your vids.
It's coming along well! I think what determines the color of the finished syrup is the initial sugar content of the sap and how you filter it. We used to nearly always have dark syrup, but when we upgraded our system, it's now nearly always lighter. I'm not sure the exact correlation between sugar content and final coloring, but I prefer the darker stuff... it's got a deeper maple flavor.
Also, I think I'm gonna buy one of those grills for my dad. He'd love it, lol. I'll use your code. :D
I’m on day four of my fast and what am I watching y’all eat, pancakes, lol! That looks amazing and delicious! Nice work guys!
Wow, that black walnut is beautiful.
so much greatness in one video between the food drinks and projects looks like you guys are having a blast out there
Oh where to start? Between the coffee and the pancakes, I am now starving for maple syrup. Then throw in the scenery and all your good friends... makes me want to come work for you for the year! Thanks for another great video
It's nice to know an expert on everything to do with things. You can get a lot of things done.
Oh man I love that simple rafter templet you used to trim the end peak logs with and it came out beautifully.
They're beautiful pieces of wood! Many years ago dad made mom a coffee table from a piece of burl wood. He sanded, and after it was completely smooth he used linseed oil to draw out the color. My parents are both gone, but that table still looks as beautiful today in my living room now as it did back then. Maybe consider a natural oil like linseed rather than an epoxy which will yellow over time. The shack is looking awesome!
i lived in the high country of wyoming near yellowstone for a while, and my boss's brother-in-law had a massive mill, could do an 80 foot stick in one shot. he used to do beautiful raw cut lumber for a few local guys that did hand made furniture and home accessories like stairs and railings. he had a big chop saw that was about a 4 foot circular blade on a 4cyl diesel! it was really fun watching him run that stuff
That's the most canadain cup of coffee ever brewed. Epic.
Make an electric guitar body from the black Walnut slabs plz. Would look incredble
That walnut looks nice. Nice guitar wood.
Bet coffee was fantastic! Wood looks beautiful!
Yes double comment, yes you n Don need to build a picnic table n benches with all those extra cut down trees. Nice to have around your grill n fire cookout area. After the snow is all gone you can rake the area all up n make it a nice area.
That coffee syrup combo sounds really delicious! 😋 You were making music with you saw on high speed video. 😄 Another awesome video, so excited for yummy syrup and the celebratory pancake/fresh syrup dinner . That looked so good!!!! Beautiful walnut! That will be fun to see what you make with it. Love all you do! ❤ "Arduous" that's a cool word. 😎 Can't wait to see this all finished. Peace and good fortune and good health to you and your family. 👍
You better market that idea. Maple sap coffee. That black walnut is beautiful!!
Excellent! Shared this with our kids. They are posted to ON, and began boiling sap.
Yes the black walnut makes some nice furniture
'You took some stuff and made a thing'. Lol That literally made me belly laugh. Quite the cast of characters you've assembled
The walnut wood is beautiful!!
I love your videos, you are funny makes what you do interesting. Thanks for making these videos so this ole gal can continue to watch them
Kevin, I think you just invented Canadian Coffee ☕
11:50 We are with you, . Been using our sawmill to make 2 by 4 s . ...oh, and they look great!
Thanks for all the fun videos!
Don deserves first pancakes for all his tireless work we all should have friends like don, I need lots of holes dug so send him over after he's done
The coffee with sap is the best thing I have seen in a long time ! Creative Genius! 10 ⭐️ VIDEO!!!! Canada is great! MAPLE SYRUP SAP COFFEE! STARBUCKS EAT YOUR HEART OUT BECAUSE YOU SAW IT HERE FIRST!!!!!
Coming along. Cut end part, just bore a hole in existing log and one hole same diameter in the one cut off, glue - add in large dowel. Could do a lag bolt but then countersink the head and fill. Love the walnut 👍 looks great overall. Cowboy coffee, maple style. Cowboy coffee is cooked over a fire, pretty rank but good, personal preference.
Never clicked a video so fast, keep it up man
So many videos so quickly! It's awesome
You guys were hilarious with that coffee, never seen 2 grown men so excited in a forest with coffee. How are the 2 ducks doing?
ducks are good.
"Swearing in the Woods with Kevin" !! Great second channel name - start it now. Enjoying your Vid's from here in Oregon.
To reattach it can you do a double mortise and peg? Drill matching holes in the ends and put in a peg to connect them. Use waterproof adhesive to help hold it in place. AND maybe a metal bar on the top for added support. .
The black walnut is beautiful.
My goodness that walnut is awesome
Ready-Rod to re-attach the roof log. A counter sunk hole. A washer and nut. And a plug for the hole.
for the over hang cut off, drill out the center use threaded rod or some iron pipe then caulk , glue it and screw it back together
Well Kev, if you don't make the shack into a sugar shack, you can always use it for a small coffee shop, for your maple coffee, call it, "Kevin's Strange Brew", love the episode, God bless you and your family, Happy Easter, until next week, keep living the dream, peace my brother.
I hope you manage to get unstuck before next week, I love how this build is coming along, that syrup looks DELICIOUS!
Fine entertainment. And the mill comes into play. How about a 'belt and suspenders' approach to reattaching the log end? Drill a circle of holes for wooden dowels with a long lag-bolt fitted into a central hole. Finish by gluing the dowels and slide the end on.
Great video my mouth was watering the time you guys had the pancakes and maple syrup YUM
That black walnut is beautiful.
Beautiful walnut! Holy snickers! Nioce!
Every outfit needs a man like Don! All business, Straight Man, no emotions!🤣🤣
Reattaching the end of the overhanging log: Position and line-up both pieces to make registration marks at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. Connect the registration marks across the endgrain surface to form bisecting lines. The point where they intersect should be somewhere near the center, but doesn't need to be exact as it will be mirrored perfectly on the opposite/facing surface based on the registration marks. Use that "centerpoint" on each face to locate and mark for a square mortise, sized to whatever piece of beefy lumber you can reasonably fit in there. Cut the tenons with drill press/chisels and make it as tight a fit as possible to the tenon/pin. Once sledgehammered into place and nicely mated, drive screws from the sides into the pin to lock everything in place. The tenon/pin is enduring the sheer force of the roof weight, so the screws just keep the assembly from working it's way apart laterally over time.
I did the same thing with this season's first sap collected from the maple on my North lot. Tasty cup of coffee to be sure.
James Hoffmann watching this is like: "You did what with the coffee?" :D
Great video man, thanks.
Awesome video as always!! They need to make a coffee grinder that can be attached to a drill . Maybe a bit for coffee grinders . I know it could be pretty useful at the job sight . Take care and stay safe my friends !!!
Oh my goodness that coffee looked so yummy!!! Cabin is coming along nicely. I'm interested in seeing the door take shape. 🤣
A suggestion to re-connect the roof holder block - make a 2X4 hole in both of them and jam a 2X4 as a joint
4 or 5 dowels will help re-attach. And glue, of course!
had pancakes, eggs ( on my little frying pan), and bacon this morning, yum
Use the Steve Smith method to extend that short log. Remember your primary colors Red, Green and Gray!!!!
Good morning Kevin from Melville Saskatchewan have a blessed day I love your use of the chainsaw in construction and how good you’re at it
What if you used the sap water for the pancakes? I wonder how that would be
Maybe a horizontal dovetail to hold them together. That way they hold the weight. Then throw a couple custom made dowels into it to secure? Look forward to seeing what becomes of the walnut. God bless
The coffee sounds great! Buds started to open in southern Wisconsin 2-3 weekends ago so I don't have anymore sap to try this with. However, I do put the finished syrup in my coffee as a sweetener! Great video, looking forward to seeing the roof go on the sugar shack in the next one!
Crazy how it is more affordable to buy a nice new mill than it would be to buy the 2X4s for even a small garage today. A guy could make the price of the mill back in a couple days!
Awesome looking pancakes !
now I gotta make me some...
Buckwheat has no gluten,
can`t find that around here anymore.
If the cabin is going to be a sugar shack,
you`ll need a way to vent out all that steam from the syrup.
Al that water will have to go somewhere...
Thank You for sharing your video, and letting us hang out.
Drill hole in each side of the log and use a piece of wood glued into each piece and pin it back together! Easy
Syrup looks sooo good. I like the motor oil color syrup.
Kevin,.. you are too funny!! Love you guys. Happy Easter!
ok there must be a creative way to be able to attach a drill to that coffee grinder! :)
My regular coffee tasted so flat while i was watching this. I am so envious! And, I’m surprised they didn’t use maple sap in place of the water for the pancakes
Great highly diverse video, lol, can't wait for the next. Cheers
Instead of shimming, you could add a cross piece of milled 2x4 underneath, tying in your roof and your horizontal logs.
I am Canadian but our family always adds more milk to the pancake batter and make crepes. They cook faster and more evenly and then we add butter and syrup and roll up to eat. YUM. Wish we had maple syrup trees where I live in BC
Thanks for the video, keep it up. Happy Easter to you and the fam!
#🍁☕ YES!!!😃 I'm glad the Maple Coffee worked. The Best of breakfast's 2 flavors. Definitely got to make some for myself.
The Black Walnut wood looks Stunningly Fantastic!!!
The finer the grind the greater potential for bitterness to occur. Your'e grind should be of medium quality. I got that from a friend in the business and it surprised me because I had always thought that the finer the grind the richer the flavor, not the case unless you like it bitter. Carry on Kevin, looking good.
The chainsaw sounds like angry bees when you speed it up.... 😆
Well you did it again, you made me jealous! The coffee and the pancakes, oh man! ;D
Every time I hear it now I'm going to petition till it's a thing. We need mugs and shirts that say "Swearing in the woods with Kevin"
The walnut cut was remarkably beautiful. After you put it on sticks to dry the reddish color typically disappears but you never know. You may know this but for this to be ready for fine furniture I believe the moisture content has to be around 12% although with air drying it may not drop to that level and end up at 13-14% still stable enough for fine furniture. Anyway you slice it the color and grain figuration is stunning. Thanks
we checked the walnut slabs they were at more than 44% humidity..
That coffee looked good. Sugar shack's coming along and will be useful for next year's sugaring off.
Kevin , ranch dormer would look good on the cabin , just an idea lol . On the purlin that's too short drill a hole thru the the whole add on piece and use a wooden dowel 1 1/2 " or bigger then connect it into the purlin . You guys are doing a good job , keep up the good work , Those hotcakes and maple syrup looked damn good .
Mmm breakfast at Kevin's! Lookin good keeper goin 😎👍🏻
